Abstract Exciting optical effects such as polarization control, imaging, and holography were demonstrated at the nanoscale using the complex and irregular structures of nanoparticles with the multipole Mie-resonances in the optical range. The optical response of such particles can be simulated either by full wave numerical simulations or by the widely used analytical coupled multipole method (CMM), however, an analytical solution in the framework of CMM can be obtained only in a limited number of cases. In this paper, a modification of the CMM in the framework of the Born series and its applicability for simulation of light scattering by finite nanosphere structures, maintaining both dipole and quadrupole resonances, are investigated. The Born approximation simplifies an analytical consideration of various systems and helps shed light on physical processes ongoing in that systems. Using Mie theory and Green’s functions approach, we analytically formulate the rigorous coupled dipole-quadrupole equations and their solution in the different-order Born approximations. We analyze in detail the resonant scattering by dielectric nanosphere structures such as dimer and ring to obtain the convergence conditions of the Born series and investigate how the physical characteristics such as absorption in particles, type of multipole resonance, and geometry of ensemble influence the convergence of Born series and its accuracy.

Abstract All-dielectric nanophotonics is a rapidly developing and practical alternative to plasmonics for nanoscale optics. The electric and magnetic Mie resonances in high-index low-loss dielectric nanoresonators can be engineered to exhibit unique scattering response. Recently, nanophotonic structures satisfying parity-time (PT) symmetry have been shown to exhibit novel scattering responses beyond what can be achieved from the conventional nanoresonators. The complex interference of the magnetic and electric Mie resonances and lattice modes excited in PT-symmetric nanoantenna arrays give rise to a scattering anomaly called lasing spectral singularity (SS), where the scattering coefficients tend to infinity. In our previous work [1], we demonstrated the existence of lasing spectral singularities in vertically stacked 2D GaInP PT-symmetric metasurface. In this paper, we analyze the direction-sensitive scattering response of the PT-symmetric GaInP metasurface by decomposing the total scattered field into the electric and magnetic multipoles. The far-field scattering response at the singularity is highly asymmetric for incidence from either the gain or loss side and can be tuned by changing the geometry. By analyzing the phase of even- and odd-parity higher order multipoles, we explain the observed scattering response over a broad parameter space in terms of generalized Kerker effect. The interference between the direction-dependent excitation of different order multipoles and the overall 2D-lattice resonance opens a route towards designing a special class of tunable sources exhibiting direction-sensitive emission properties.

In any electrical or electronic systems, unwanted signals known as noise signals are encountered which interact with the true signal and thus affecting signal quality. Noise may enter into a device or system in many forms and have a different order of impacts. Prevention and elimination of noise had attained paramount importance to ensure signal fidelity. This chapter presents a comprehensive analysis on elimination of noise by electronic grounding of instrumentation and automation systems as well as various engineering considerations for the same.

Abstract The article deals with the data of theoretical and experimental studies of the processes of activation gold leaching using reactive peroxide carbonate compounds, obtained by electrophotochemical treatment of solutions of initial reagents of the corresponding composition, in the composition of reagent complexes. The obtained results of the experiments on the interaction of various carbonate and peroxide-carbonate compounds with sodium cyanide in the process of mixing activated and non-activated solutions with aqueous cyanide solutions in different order definitely prove that supramolecular percarbonate-cyanide compounds are being formed in them. It has been established that these activated solutions, prepared on the basis of the initial hydrocarbonate ones, contain metastable compounds that provide a higher rate of gold extraction from crude minerals than standard aqueous cyanic solutions of the same initial concentration.

Composite systems with certain cytotoxic (AM1/lectin) and adsorption (AM1/gelatin) activity have been developed on the basis of methyl silica and protein molecules – lectin and gelatin. For both types of composites, mechanisms of water binding to the surface and methods of transferring of hydrophobic materials into the aquatic environment have been investigated. The state of interfacial water in air, organic and acid media was studied. It has been found that the presence of a hydrophobic component in composites stabilizes of surface water in a weakly associated state, when a significant part of water molecules does not form hydrogen bonds. Liquid hydrophobic medium enhances this effect, and the strong acid (trifluoroacetic), added to it, promotes the transition of water to a strongly associated state. It has been shown that the redistribution of water in the interparticle intervals of AM1 with protein molecules immobilized on their surface changes under the influence of mechanical loads. Mechanoactivated samples are characterized by the possibility of water penetration into the spaces between the primary particles of methyl silica. It has been shown that immobilization of lectin on the surface of AM1 is accompanied by an increase in the interfacial energy gS from 4.1 to 5.2 J/g. This is due to an increase in the concentration of strongly bound water. If we analyze the changes in the distributions of radii R of the clusters of adsorbed water, we can state that in the water adsorbed by native lectin molecules, there are two main maxima at R = 1 and 3 nm. In the immobilized state, the maximum at R = 1 nm is present in both types of water (of different order), but the second maximum is observed only for more ordered associates.

Purpose: The Huashan clinical classification system for Hirayama disease has recently been proposed and has been found useful for diagnosis and treatment. So far, however, there has been little in-depth evaluation of its reliability. Thus, this study aimed to assess the reproducibility and reliability of the system. Methods: Patients diagnosed with Hirayama disease between 2019 and 2020 were recruited. Seven spine surgeons from four different institutions, including an experienced group of three and an inexperienced group of four, were trained as observers of the Huashan clinical classification system for Hirayama disease, and these surgeons classified the recruited patients using the system. Then, 2 months later, they repeated the classification on the same patients in a different order. The interobserver and intraobserver agreement between the results was analyzed using percentage agreement and weighted kappa (κ) statistics. Results: A total of 60 patients were included in the analysis. For all the observers, experienced observers, and inexperienced observers, the agreement percentages were, respectively, 78.5% (κ = 0.76), 80.0% (κ = 0.78), and 78.9% (κ = 0.77), indicating substantial interobserver reproducibility. For distinguishing typical (Types I and II) and atypical (Type III) Hirayama disease among the different groups of observers, the percentage agreement ranged from 95.6 to 98.9% (κ = 0.74–0.92), indicating substantial to nearly perfect reproducibility. For suggesting conservative treatment (Types I and III) or surgery (Type II), the percentage agreement ranged from 93.3 to 96.4% (κ = 0.81–0.90), indicating nearly perfect reproducibility. As for intraobserver agreement, the percentage agreement ranged from 68.3 to 81.7% (κ = 0.65–0.79), indicating substantial reliability. Conclusion: The Huashan clinical classification system for Hirayama disease was easy to learn and apply in a clinical environment, showing excellent reproducibility and reliability. Therefore, it would be promising to apply and promote this system for the precise and individualized future treatment of Hirayama disease.

AbstractThe name “millipede” translates to a thousand feet (from mille “thousand” and pes “foot”). However, no millipede has ever been described with more than 750 legs. We discovered a new record-setting species of millipede with 1,306 legs, Eumillipes persephone, from Western Australia. This diminutive animal (0.95 mm wide, 95.7 mm long) has 330 segments, a cone-shaped head with enormous antennae, and a beak for feeding. A distant relative of the previous record holder, Illacme plenipes from California, it belongs to a different order, the Polyzoniida. Discovered 60 m below ground in a drill hole created for mineral exploration, E. persephone possesses troglomorphic features; it lacks eyes and pigmentation, and it has a greatly elongated body—features that stand in stark contrast to its closest surface-dwelling relatives in Australia and all other members of its order. Using phylogenomics, we found that super-elongation (> 180 segments) evolved repeatedly in the millipede class Diplopoda. The striking morphological similarity between E. persephone and I. plenipes is a result of convergent evolution, probably for locomotion in similar soil habitats. Discovered in the resource-rich Goldfields-Esperance region and threatened by encroaching surface mining, documentation of this species and conservation of its habitat are of critical importance.
