AbstractWhite chanterelles (Basidiomycota), lacking the orange pigments and apricot-like odour of typical chanterelles, were found recently in the Canadian provinces of Québec (QC) and Newfoundland & Labrador (NL). Our phylogenetic analyses confirmed the identification of all white chanterelles from NL and QC as Cantharellus enelensis; we name these forma acolodorus. We characterized carotenoid pigments, lipids, phenolics, and volatile compounds in these and related chanterelles. White mutants of C. enelensis lacked detectable β-carotene, confirmed to be the primary pigment of wild-type, golden-orange individuals, and could also be distinguished by their profiles of fatty acids and phenolic acids, and by the ketone and terpene composition of their volatiles. We detected single base substitutions in the phytoene desaturase (Al-1) and phytoene synthase (Al-2) genes of the white mutant, which are predicted to result in altered amino acids in their gene products and may be responsible for the loss of β-carotene synthesis in that form.

Auricularia cornea (E.) polysaccharide is an important component of A. cornea Ehrenb, a white mutant strain of Auricularia with biological activities, such as enhancement of human immune function and cancer prevention. The hyaluronic acids (HAs) are important components of the A. cornea polysaccharide and have extremely high medicinal value. In this study, we used HA to search the target protein sucrase-isomaltase (SI). In addition, we also performed molecular dynamics (MD) simulations to explore the binding of three inhibitors (HA, acarbose and kotalanol) to SI. The MD simulations indicated that the binding of the three inhibitors may induce the partial disappearance of α helix in residues 530–580. Hence, the hydrogen bond for Gly570-Asn572, which was near the catalytic base Asp471 in SI, was broken during the binding of the three inhibitors. We reveal a new inhibitor for SI and provide reasonable theoretical clues for inhibitor binding to SI.

‘Atlantic’ is a white-skinned potato, being the standard variety for chiping commonly cultivated in Florida (Figure 1). The cultivar was released as a white mutant of the USDA breeding program. It was selected from a cross of Wauseon and Lenape (UDSA seedling B5141-6). ‘Atlantic’ was released in July 1976 by the Agricultural Research Service of the USDA, the Florida Agricultural Experiment Station, the Virginia Truck and Ornamentals Research Station, the New Jersey Agricultural Experiment Station, and the Maine Agricultural Experiment Station (Webb et al. 1978).
