Stability Issues of Entropy-Stable and/or Split-form High-order Schemes

The focus of the present research is on the analysis of local energy stability of high-order (including split-form) summation-by-parts methods, with e.g. two-point entropy-conserving fluxes, approximating non-linear conservation laws. Our main finding is that local energy stability, i.e., the numerical growth rate does not exceed the growth rate of the continuous problem, is not guaranteed even when the scheme is non-linearly stable and that this may have adverse implications for simulation results. We show that entropy-conserving two-point fluxes are inherently locally energy unstable, as they can be dissipative or anti-dissipative. Unfortunately, these fluxes are at the core of many commonly used high-order entropy-stable extensions, including split-form summation-by-parts discontinuous Galerkin spectral element methods (or spectral collocation methods). For the non-linear Burgers equation, we further demonstrate numerically that such schemes cause exponential growth of errors during the simulation. Furthermore, we encounter a similar abnormal behaviour for the compressible Euler equations, for a smooth exact solution of a density wave. Finally, for the same case, we demonstrate numerically that other commonly known split-forms, such as the Kennedy and Gruber splitting, are also locally energy unstable.

Multivalue Collocation Methods for Ordinary and Fractional Differential Equations

The present paper illustrates some classes of multivalue methods for the numerical solution of ordinary and fractional differential equations. In particular, it focuses on two-step and mixed collocation methods, Nordsieck GLM collocation methods for ordinary differential equations, and on two-step spline collocation methods for fractional differential equations. The construction of the methods together with the convergence and stability analysis are reported and some numerical experiments are carried out to show the efficiency of the proposed methods.

On the numerical solutions for nonlinear Volterra-Fredholm integral equations

In this note, we study a class of multistep collocation methods for the numerical integration of nonlinear Volterra-Fredholm Integral Equations (V-FIEs). The derived method is characterized by a lower triangular or diagonal coefficient matrix of the nonlinear system for the computation of the stages which, as it is known, can beexploited to get an efficient implementation. Convergence analysis and linear stability estimates are investigated. Finally numerical experiments are given, which confirm our theoretical results.

Existence, uniqueness, and approximate solutions for the general nonlinear distributed-order fractional differential equations in a Banach space

The purpose of this paper is to provide sufficient conditions for the local and global existence of solutions for the general nonlinear distributed-order fractional differential equations in the time domain. Also, we provide sufficient conditions for the uniqueness of the solutions. Furthermore, we use operational matrices for the fractional integral operator of the second kind Chebyshev wavelets and shifted fractional-order Jacobi polynomials via Gauss–Legendre quadrature formula and collocation methods to reduce the proposed equations into systems of nonlinear equations. Also, error bounds and convergence of the presented methods are investigated. In addition, the presented methods are implemented for two test problems and some famous distributed-order models, such as the model that describes the motion of the oscillator, the distributed-order fractional relaxation equation, and the Bagley–Torvik equation, to demonstrate the desired efficiency and accuracy of the proposed approaches. Comparisons between the methods proposed in this paper and the existing methods are given, which show that our numerical schemes exhibit better performances than the existing ones.

Applications of Optimal Spline Approximations for the Solution of Nonlinear Time-Fractional Initial Value Problems

Nonlinear fractional differential equations are widely used to model real-life phenomena. For this reason, there is a need for efficient numerical methods to solve such problems. In this respect, collocation methods are particularly attractive for their ability to deal with the nonlocal behavior of the fractional derivative. Among the variety of collocation methods, methods based on spline approximations are preferable since the approximations can be represented by local bases, thereby reducing the computational load. In this paper, we use a collocation method based on spline quasi-interpolant operators to solve nonlinear time-fractional initial value problems. The numerical tests we performed show that the method has good approximation properties.
