As an efficient and cost-effective method to synthesize nanomaterials, the hotplate technique has been reviewed in this article. Systematic studies have been carried out on the characterizations of the materials synthesized. In addition to the direct preparation of nanomaterials on metals, this method has been extended to the substrate-friendly and plasma-assisted hotplate synthesis. Apart from chemically pure nanostructures, a few nanohybrids were synthesized, further demonstrating the flexibility of this technique. The investigations on their applications indicate that they are promising material systems with potential applications in field emission devices, gas sensors, Li -ion batteries and ultrafast optical devices.

AbstractTwo routes of crystal engineering and elaboration of optical materials are described. The former applied to the design of organic-inorganic crystals for quadratic nonlinear optics is supported by a strategy of deliberately engineered noncentrosymmetric structures built-up from herringbone motifs of 2-amino-5-nitropyridinium chromophore. The original crystal growth of a solid solution of a member of this family is presented and discussed. The latter is a simple and generic elaboration of stable organic nanocrystals embedded in sol-gel matrices. Several molecules and characterization techniques have been involved to demonstrate the validity of this preparation.

Very few nonlinear optical materials are actually useful for high throughput all-optical devices. However, AlGaAs does satisfy all of the nonlinear optical figures of merit when used with photons of energy less than one half the semiconductor bandgap. Here we review our measurements of the pertinent nonlinear coefficients in waveguides and various device applications to all-optical switching in the communications band around 1550 nm.

The present paper describes research on the mechanical properties and related dislocation structure of CdTe, a II-VI semiconductor compound with a wide range of uses in electrical and optical devices. At room temperature CdTe exhibits little plasticity and at the same time relatively low strength and hardness. The mechanical behavior of CdTe was examined at elevated temperatures with the goal of understanding plastic flow in this material and eventually improving the room temperature properties. Several samples of single crystal CdTe of identical size and crystallographic orientation were deformed in compression at 300°C to various levels of total strain. A resolved shear stress vs. compressive glide strain curve (Figure la) was derived from the results of the tests and the knowledge of the sample orientation.
