We compared the effects of spring seeding date on stand density, crop growth, seed yield, water-use-efficiency, and grain quality of three pulse crops [chickpea (Cicer arietinum L.), lentil (Lens culinaris Medik.) and pea (Pisum sativum L.)] grown at Scott and Swift Current, SK, during 1993 to 1997. Wheat (Triticum aestivum L. emend. Thell.) was used as a reference crop. Seeding date did not meaningfully affect plant density for chickpea, lentil or pea. Crop growth stage related to thermal time resulted in robust prediction equations for chickpea, lentil and pea (R2 = 0.87 to 0.98). When seeding was delayed 2 wk, the crop response was inconsistent. When seeding was delayed by 4 wk, consistent, mainly negative, effects on crop parameters occurred due to the exacerbation of summer drought stress. Pulse crop yields were more negatively affected by delayed seeding than were wheat yields. When seeding of chickpea, lentil, and pea was delayed 4 wk, seed yield decreased at the majority of site-years. When yield reductions occurred, the average reductions were 44, 38, and 31%, for the respective species. For chickpea and lentil, seeding delays of 2 and 4 wk decreased seed size at the majority of site-years with seed size reductions averaging 10% when they occurred. In the semiarid Northern Great Plains (NGP), chickpea, lentil, and pea should be seeded before spring wheat due to a greater risk of loss of yield and quality. Previous research has demonstrated that late and sequential applications of glyphosate and glufosinate can have adverse effects on glyphosate- and glufosinate-resistant canola. Similarly, imidazolinone (IMI)-resistant canola may be affected negatively by late applications of imidazolinone herbicides. Field trials were established across the Northern Great Plains region from 2010 to 2012 to examine the response of IMI-resistant canola yield, yield components, and seed quality to late and sequential applications of imazamox. Plots received either a single imazamox application at the two-leaf, six-leaf, bolt, or early bloom stages or sequential applications at the two-leaf followed by six-leaf, two-leaf followed by bolting, and two-leaf followed by early bloom stages; an unsprayed control was included for comparisons. Results indicated that in most site-years there was no effect of imazamox application timing on IMI-resistant canola yield, yield components, or seed quality. These results suggest that late and sequential applications of imazamox to IMI-resistant canola should have little effect on canola production, even if they are made beyond the recommended six-leaf stage. In situations where growers are forced to make late applications (beyond six leaves) to IMI-resistant canola, using solely imazamox appears to minimize adverse effects on seed yield and quality.

Faba beans (Vicia faba L.), also known as fava beans, like other crops, are influenced by several factors: their genotype, environment, and management, as well as the interaction between these, have an important impact on seed yielding and seed quality traits. This study was conducted at three locations in South Italy between 2017 and 2019 to evaluate the sowing date effect on yield and yield components of three Vicia faba L., originating from cool climates. The results showed that seed yield (SY) and yield components declined with sowing delay. The crop’s environment (year × site) and management (sowing date) were found to explain 34.01% and 42.95% of the total seed yield variation, respectively. The data showed that the tested genotypes were positively influenced by the environment with sandy loam soil and early winter sowing date, resulting in either a greater number of SY and THS than in the other environment. The three faba bean genotypes showed tolerance to winter frost conditions in the two growing seasons.

The proportion of oat (Avena sativa L.) being used for race horses and human consumption has increased over the past 15 yr. The objective of this study was to evaluate the effects of N, seeding date and cultivar on grain yield components, grain yield and grain quality of oat under a direct seeding system. Four N rates, three seeding dates and two cultivars were tested at Indian Head, Melfort, and Canora, SK, and Brandon, MB. Yield was more responsive to increasing N rates from 15 and 80 kg ha-1 when oat was seeded in early May versus early June. Panicles plant-1 was the yield component that accounted for most of the yield increase achieved from increasing rates of N, while kernel weight was the yield component that decreased as the rate of N increased. Physical seed quality decreased (plump seed decreased and thin seed increased) with delayed seeding and greater N fertilizer rates. Nitrogen fertilizer and seeding date had a much larger effect on the quality of CDC Pacer than AC Assiniboia. Combining early seeding, appropriate N fertility and well-adapted cultivars should increase the likelihood of optimizing oat yield and quality necessary for high-value markets. White prairie clover [Dalea candida (Michx.) Willd.] is native to the dry prairies and hillsides of the Northern Great Plains. A study was initiated in 2012 with six white prairie clover populations collected from the Canadian Prairies. Plant growth characteristics, forage biomass, seed yield, and forage nutritive values were evaluated using a randomized complete block design in a field near Swift Current, SK. Three populations from Argyle, Carlowrie, and Big Grass Marsh (NCP588) in Manitoba displayed erect-type growth while those from Douglas Provincial Park and Stewart Valley in Saskatchewan and Writing on Stone Provincial Park in Alberta exhibited prostrate growth. The populations did not differ for mean biomass yield (79–104 g plant−1, p = 0.54) and mean seed yield (6.6–9.1 g plant−1, p = 0.69); however, they differed for bloom stage nutritional parameters such as acid detergent fibre (25%–30%, p = 0.04), neutral detergent fibre (34%–41%, p < 0.01), crude proteins (15%–18%, p < 0.01), phosphorus (0.24%–0.29%, p = 0.02), and iron content (144–360 ppm, p = 0.01). To our knowledge, this is the first report of comparative phenotypic, nutritional, and propagation study of native white prairie clover populations of Canada. The constraints and opportunities for successful domestication of white prairie clover as a forage crop are discussed.
