The structures and optical performances of TiO2doped with 4thperiodic transition metal ions were investigated in this paper. The characterization results of X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and X-ray diffraction showed that the transition metal ions existed in oxidative states, and composites formed because of the reaction between doped metal ions and TiO2. The absorption spectroscopy of TiO2doped with zinc was mainly in ultraviolet region, close to that of the pure TiO2. While for TiO2doped with other transition metal ions including V, Cr, Mn, Fe, Co, Ni and Cu ions, the absorption spectroscopies covered ultraviolet region and visible light region, much broader than that of the pure TiO2.

This study reports the effects of transition metal ions on the colour of blue-green beryl. Industrial cameras were used to measure colour in the CIELAB colour space. X-ray fluorescence (XRF), X-ray diffraction (XRD), infrared spectroscopy (IR), and ultraviolet-visible (UV–vis) spectroscopy were used for characterization. The d–d transition of Fe3+ with sixfold coordination, the O2−→Fe3+ charge transfer, and the charge transition of binuclear metal M–M complexes formed by [Fe2(OH)4]2+ in the channel caused a yellow tone, whereas the charge transfer of Fe2+/Fe3+ with sixfold coordination caused a blue-green tone. The chroma of blue-green beryl was negatively correlated with the ratio of Cs+Mn to Fe contents. The lightness of blue-green beryl was negatively correlated with the total content of transition metal ions.

Hydroxyapatite/chitosan (HApC) composite has been prepared by precipitation method and used for removal of heavy metals (Cr6+, Zn2+and Cd2+) from aqueous solution. The HAp and 3H7C composite with HAp:chitosan ratio of 3:7 (wt%) were characterized by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction and scanning electron microscopy-energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy. The SEM results showed that HAp is spherical-shaped and crystalline, while chitosan has a flat structure. SEM micrograph of 3H7C composite reveals crystalline of HAp uniformly spread over the surface of chitosan. The crystal structure of HAp is maintained in 3H7C composite. Chitosan affects the adsorption capacity of HAp for heavy metal ions; it binds the metal ions as well as HAp. The kinetic data was best described by the pseudo-second order. Surface adsorption and intraparticle diffusion take place in the mechanism of adsorption process. The binding of HAp powder with chitosan made the capability of composite to removal of Cr6+, Zn2+and Cd2+from aqueous solution effective. The order of removal efficiency (Cr6+> Cd2+> Zn2+) was observed.

Abstract EXAFS spectra have been measured in order to elucidate the local structure around Rb+ in aqueous solution. It has been found that the Rb+ is surrounded by ca. six O atoms of H2O molecules. The Rb -O distance was determined to be 2.90 (3) Å. The coordination number and Rb -O distance compare well with those of the other alkaline metal ions estimated by X-ray diffraction.

Transition metal ions (Co and Cr) doped ZnO nanoparticles supported on natural zeolite were synthesized using co-precipitation method. The synthesized samples were characterized by means of X-ray diffraction, energy dispersive X-ray, Fourier-transform infrared absorption, and UV-visible diffuse reflectance spectroscopy. The samples were further used as photocatalyst for degradation of methyl orange and methylene blue in aqueous solutions under UV light irradiation. The results showed that zeolite supported Cr-doped ZnO nanoparticles is more efficient compared with zeolite supported Co-doped ZnO nanoparticles. It is also revealed that zeolite supported samples possessed higher photocatalytic efficiency compared to bare samples.
