A lens coupled CCD camera showing single electron sensitivity has been built for TEM applications. The design is illustrated in Fig. 1. The bottom flange of a JEM-4000EX microscope is replaced by a special flange which carries a large rectangular leaded glass window, 22 mm thick. A 20 μm thick layer of red phosphor is coated on the window, and the entire window is sputter-coated with a thin layer of Au/Pt. A two-lens relay system is used to provide efficient coupling between the image on the phosphor scintillator and the CCD imager. An f1.0 lens (Goerz optical) with front focal length 71.6 mm is used as the collector. A mirror prism, of the Amici type, is used to "bend" the optical path by 90° to prevent X-rays which may penetrate the leaded glass from hitting the CCD detector. Images may be relayed directly to the camera (1:1) or demagnified by a factor of up to 3:1 by moving the lens assembly.

Ambidentate ligand pyridyldiketones were used in combination with copper to catalyze maintain of aryl halides under very mild temperatures. This novel catalytic system allow efficient coupling in one of the smoothest conditions ever reported in literature.

Compact accelerator-driven neutron sources allow to operate multiple optimised target-moderator-reflector (TMR) units adapted to the requirements of the respective instruments. The compact design of the TMR units allows an efficient coupling of neutron production, neutron moderation and extraction, but requires a novel way of optimisation. The neutronic performance of different TMR units based on polyethylene, heavy water and a mixture of heavy and light water moderators together with Pb and Be reflectors and a borated polyethylene absorber is discussed. Extraction channels for thermal and cold neutrons are investigated regarding the energy and time spectra.

The GI (graded-index) POFs (Plastic optical fibers), which has been proven to reach distances as long as 1 km at 1.25 Gb/s has a relatively low numerical aperture . Therefore, the efficient coupling of GI POFs to the light source has become critical to the power budget in the system. Efficient coupling for a POFs system normally involves either a separate lens or the direct formation of the lens at the end of the fiber. Forming the lens-like structure directly on the fiber end is preferred for simplicity of fabrication and packaging, such as polishing and fusion, combine different fibers with the cascaded fiber method and hydroflouride (HF) chemical etching. These approaches are well established, but applicable only to glass. Optical assembly architecture for multichannel fibers and optical devices is critical to optical fiber interconnections. Multichannel fiber-pigtail laser diode (LD) modules have potential for supporting higher data throughput and longer transmission distances. However, to be of practical use, these modules must be more precise. This work proposes and manufactures lensed plastic optical fibers (LPOF) array. This novel manipulation can be utilized to fabricate an aspherical lens on a fiber array after the UV curing of the photo-sensitive polymer; the coupling efficiency (CE) is increased and exceeds 47% between the LD array and the fiber array.

The use of Mineka coupling is extended to a case with a continuous state space: an efficient coupling of random walks S and S' in can be made such that S' — S is virtually a one-dimensional simple random walk. This insight settles a zero-two law of ergodicity. One more proof of Blackwell's renewal theorem is also presented.
