A novel micro heat sink applying the jet-impingement and cross flow is proposed to dissipate the heat from the electrical devices. Six hotspots of 2 mm × 2 mm are positioned on a flat plate of 25.4 mm × 25.4 mm. The area of flat plate except the hotspots is provided a constant heat flux of 20 W/cm2 as background heating source among cases. Four heat fluxes from 40 to 100 W/cm2 on the hotspots are tested to simulate the different operation conditions. The cross flow is used to remove the background heat flux and jet flow is supplied into the swirl microchannel, located at the right top of hotspot, to dissipate the large heat flux from hotspots. The channel depth is 0.5 mm and the width of swirl microchannel is 0.38 mm. The cross flow and jet flow velocity vary from 0.1 m/s to 0.5 m/s and from 0.5 m/s to 2 m/s, respectively. The effects of cross flow and jet flow on the cooling performance are investigated by numerical simulation. The local heat transfer coefficient and Nusselt number are calculated to evaluate the cooling performance of proposed micro heat sink for the targets of low maximum temperature, temperature gradient and pressure drop. The results show that the maximum temperature of the proposed design occurred at the outlet is approximately 65 °C among tested cases. The corresponding pressure drop is 5.5 kPa. The overall thermal resistance reaches as small as 0.23 K/W.

The paper proposed an idea of using micro-W-shaped ribs on a test plate to improve the impingement heat transfer performance in a multiple-jet impingement cooling system. An experimental study has been conducted on the heat transfer characteristics of multiple-jet impingement onto a flat plate and a roughened plate with micro W-shaped ribs under maximum cross flow scheme. Transient liquid crystal thermography method has been used to obtain the detailed impingement heat transfer distribution for the Reynolds numbers from 15,000 to 30,000.The effects of micro W ribs on the local Nusselt number and the related pressure loss were investigated experimentally. The jet-to-plate spacing H/d=1.5 was used in the experiments for both the flat and the micro-W-rib roughened plate. The experiments showed that the micro W ribs on the plate can enhance the impingement heat transfer globally and locally, and increase the heat transfer uniformity, which are due to the facts that the micro W ribs on the test plate increase the near-wall turbulent mixing by interacting with the wall jets and cross flow. The pressure loss is negligibly increased compared to the impingement onto the flat plate.

Abstract The motion of the target plate is important in some industrial applications which apply multiple jet impingement, such as reflow soldering, drying and food processing. Multiple jet impingement is widely used due to its ability to generate high heat transfer rates over large and complex areas. This convective process is characterized by several flow interactions essentially due to adjacent jets mixing prior the impingement, wall jets collision after the impingement, as well as crossflow interactions induced by the motion of the wall jets that flow through the exits of the domain. These interactions lead to strong flow recirculation, pressure gradients and boundary layer development. However, the complexity of the flow interactions is increased with the surface motion in confined space, due to the generation of strong shear regions. These interactions can induce problems and product defects due to complicated thermal behavior and non-uniform heating or cooling, being important to fully understand the process in order to reduce time and costs. This work addresses the experimental analysis of multiple air jets impinging on a moving flat plate. The experiments are conducted on a purpose-built test facility which has been commissioned, using a 2D-PIV system. Through this technique, the flow structure and velocity profiles will be analyzed in detail. The effects of the impinging plate motion on the resulting global and local velocity profile is compared with a static flat plate. The multiple jet configuration consists on air flowing through 14 circular nozzles, at a Reynolds number of 690 and 1,380. The experiments are conducted for a nozzle-to-plate distance of 8 and a jet-to-jet spacing of 2. The target plate motion remains constant throughout the experiments and equal to 0.03 m/s. The results are compared for both stationary and moving flat plates cases and express the increased complexity of the flow due to strong interaction between jets and the target surface, which affects the heat transfer performance. The results obtained experimentally are important to clearly define this complex flow and these data can be used in future works for numerical model validation.

The processed wood industry urgently needs a dryer to improve the quality of its production. One of the important components in a dryer is a heat exchanger. To support a durable heat transfer process, a superior material is needed. The aim of the study was to analyze the effectiveness of the application of cross-flow flat plate heat exchangers to be used in wood dryers and compare the materials used and simulate heat transfer on cross-flow flat plate heat exchangers using Computational Fluid Dynamic simulations. The results showed that there was a variation in the temperature out of dry air and gas on the flat plate heat exchanger and copper material had a better heat delivery by reaching the temperature out of dry air and gas on the flat plate type heat exchanger of successive cross flow and.   overall heat transfer coefficient value and the effectiveness value of the heat exchanger of the heat transfer characteristics that occur with the cross-flow flat plate type heat exchanger in copper material of 251.74725 W/K and 0.25.
