PurposeAlthough important for organizational performance, much is still unknown about the relationship between employee well-being and transformational leadership. The authors answer calls to consider the relationship (1) in an extreme context (i.e. coronavirus pandemic), (2) at the dimension level and (3) differences that exist depending on the employee's gender.Design/methodology/approachThe authors employed a two-wave study with data collected from 212 working individuals. Respondents reported their level of COVID-19 anxiety and leadership experiences at time 1 starting at the height of the pandemic and three weeks later reported well-being.FindingsThe authors found COVID-19 anxiety weakened the influence of transformational leadership style on well-being, and this was only the case for females. Further, the authors found that while the moderator of COVID-19 anxiety weakened the influence of core transformational leadership behaviors and intellectual stimulation on well-being, the more individualized and short-term focused transformational behaviors of individualized consideration and performance expectations proved to have resilient effects on well-being with no moderating effects. Looking at gender differences, the authors found that this was only the case for females.Originality/valueThe findings extend research by capturing an external shock concerning the coronavirus pandemic to better understand how transformational leadership style, its dimensions and employee gender, influence well-being. While the authors expected COVID-19 anxiety to weaken the positive effects of transformational leadership style on well-being, paradoxically the authors also expected differential effects when examining individual dimensions.

Purpose – The purpose of this paper is to validate an instrument for the Ghoshal and Bartlett model and operationalize its four attributes into a multidimensionality instrument questionnaire. This study operationalizes the four attributes, namely, discipline, support, trust and stretch, into a multidimensionality instrument questionnaire and tests this instrument's validation using data from 317 Malaysian Multimedia Super Corridor-status companies. Design/methodology/approach – This paper follows the procedures of building a scale measure. This was carried out in three main stages. The first stage is the generation of scale items. The purpose of this stage is to identify and analyze items based on intensive literature review. The second stage is the assessment of face validity to ensure the correspondence between the individual items and the constructs intended to measure. The final stage is the statistical validation, which includes the assessment of validity and reliability of the introduced instrument. Findings – The paper introduces 23 multidimensional questionnaire items, which contribute to organizational context dimensions. The statistical analysis that followed the conceptual development shows that the presented instrument has good psychometric properties. The validity and reliability of the scale were presented and discussed. Research limitations/implications – This paper suggests that these organizational context dimensions can be investigated with a high degree of confidence, especially when applied to organizations with different climate. To improve the robustness of the model, additional testing in different contexts and cultures may be necessary. Future research may also test the validity of the instrument using larger sample data. Practical implications – The measure offers researchers a comprehensive and flexible approach to the assessment of organizational context and collective learning from a managerial action perspective. This measure may be useful for a broad range of research interests, enabling researchers to investigate some theoretical propositions related to managerial action, such as the relationship between organizational climate and organizational performance. The measure also helps to establish the relationship between organizational context and collective learning in the organization. Originality/value – This study helps to fill the gap in the development of the organizational climate through both conceptual and empirical work. There is therefore a need for a measured, testable instrument to facilitate the empirical evaluation by the modern organization. This measure also contributes toward a better understanding of the managerial role. This managerial role has an imperative role in crafting the behavior of the organization’s members, developing collective learning through distributed initiatives and mutual cooperation.

Purpose The purpose of this paper is to explore the impact of performance measurement systems (PMS) on organizational performance in public sector. In addition, it investigates the moderating effects of the organizational context. Design/methodology/approach Using a multivariate analysis, the authors investigate the extent of PMS used among Portuguese Government agencies and their effects on organizational performance. Data were gathered from the only survey (based on their Comparative Public Organization Data Base for Research and Analysis survey) applied to the Portuguese Government agencies. Findings The authors find that the extent to which agencies use PMS is positively associated with the organizational performance (in a multidimensional perspective). Moreover, the organizational performance is contingent upon the fit between PMS and the agency’s context in light of the contingency theory (especially the orientation to citizens and the level of competition). Originality/value Although prior research has studied the use of PMS in public sector organizations, one question that has not been effectively answered is whether performance information is effectively used to improve public sector performance. In this way, this paper contributes to the understanding of the impact of PMS on the organizational performance, providing empirical evidence in a country that is in a period of “transition” in the introduction of NPM reforms.

This study uses the perspectives of dynamic capabilities and ambidexterity to investigate the direct effect of the development of an organization’s explorative and exploitative capabilities on organizational tensions and performance. We employed a sample of high-tech Taiwanese firms to test our hypotheses and surveyed the informants’ knowledge about their companies. We sent out 1000 questionnaires and received 234 valid responses, yielding a 23.4% effective response rate. The results also indicated that the consideration of incorporating balanced and combined dimension ambidexterity would benefit high-tech firms and help them facilitate higher performance. In summary, based on the results of previous studies, this study divided dynamic capabilities into exploitation capabilities and exploration capabilities, and divided ambidexterity into combined and balanced dimensions, so as to redefine the relationship between dynamic capabilities, ambidexterity and organizational performance from the perspective of tension, thereby enhancing the connotations of dynamic theory.

A firm's marketing orientation and entrepreneurial orientation intuitively should relate to organizational performance. Considerable theory can be found concerning the causes and consequences of each orientation as well as their relationship, but little empirical evidence exists, especially for small-firm samples. This paper examines the relationship between the two concepts and how this relationship is moderated by the firm's external environment. In addition, the relationship of marketing orientation and entrepreneurial orientation to firm performance and the moderating effects of the environment on these two relationships are examined. The sample consists of entrepreneurs, defined as those individuals who have started or purchased a small business, and who are still leading the business they started or purchased.

This study examines the relationship between high-performance work systems (HPWS) and organizational performance and how the relationship differs by type of communication within organizations. Using data on publicly traded manufacturing firms in Korea from the Human Capital Corporate Panel survey, we find that HPWS are positively related to organizational performance, and importantly, this relationship varies by the level of vertical and horizontal communication. The positive effect of HPWS on organizational performance is more apparent when vertical and horizontal communications are relatively high. These results emphasize the role of internal communication as an important organizational context for the implementation of HPWS.

The relationship between management control systems (MSS) and the strategy does not only focus on the type of SPM is used, but on how managers in using SPM. This study investigated the effect of the use of diagnostic and interactive SPM on the relationship strategy and organizational performance. The nature of the relationship between SPM, strategies and performance depends on the organizational context. Research conducted on the SPM and strategies in developing countries is limited. The present study is the first empirical research conducted, which explores the relationship between the use of SPM, competitive strategy and organizational performance based on data obtained from the manufacturing companies in the province of Banten. The research findings support the view that both (the use of diagnostic and interactive) moderate the relationship between business strategy and performance. Respondents are 40 executive managers working in industry companies manufakutr in Banten Province. In this study, data analysis using Warp approach Partial Least Square (PLS) using PLS Warp Solfware 2:00 version. Another finding of this study is a moderate effect created by the use of diagnostic SPM is more significant when the cost leadership strategy that is applied to the performance. There is no evidence to support the proposition Porter exclusivity of the business strategy for better performance. Consequently, the results of this study have important implications for management practice and academic literature.
