Studies of the initial stages of nucleation of silicon and germanium have yielded insights that point the way to achievement of engineering control over crystal size evolution at the nanometer scale. In addition to their importance in understanding fundamental issues in nucleation, these studies are relevant to efforts to (i) control the size distributions of silicon and germanium “quantum dots𠇍, which will in turn enable control of the optical properties of these materials, (ii) and control the kinetics of crystallization of amorphous silicon and germanium films on amorphous insulating substrates so as to, e.g., produce crystalline grains of essentially arbitrary size.Ge quantum dot nanocrystals with average sizes between 2 nm and 9 nm were formed by room temperature ion implantation into SiO2, followed by precipitation during thermal anneals at temperatures between 30°C and 1200°C[1]. Surprisingly, it was found that Ge nanocrystal nucleation occurs at room temperature as shown in Fig. 1, and that subsequent microstructural evolution occurred via coarsening of the initial distribution.

ABSTRACT The initial distribution of radioactive C was studied in the cell fractions of the liver, kidney, testes and thigh muscles after intraperitoneal injection of testosterone-4-14C into 40 day old male rats. To make this possible, the absolute and specific activity values (μc/mg C) were determined. After both ten and twenty minutes the cytoplasm fractions possessed the highest activity values, the only exception being the specific activity of the liver cytoplasm ten minutes after injection when the microsomes of the liver showed a higher activity. After 20 min the mitochondria possessed the highest specific activity values among the corpuscular fractions. The specific activity values in the microsomes of all four organs studied were lower 20 min after the time of injection than after 10 min, a fact, which is suspected to be the result of the initial formation of conjugates in the microsomes.

Abstract A new framework is proposed for the study of collisions between very heavy ions which lead to the synthesis of Super-Heavy Elements (SHE), to address the fusion hindrance phenomenon. The dynamics of the reaction is studied in terms of collective degrees of freedom undergoing relaxation processes with different time scales. The Nakajima-Zwanzig projection operator method is employed to eliminate fast variable and derive a dynamical equation for the reduced system with only slow variables. There, the time evolution operator is renormalised and an inhomogeneous term appears, which represents a propagation of the given initial distribution. The term results in a slip to the initial values of the slow variables. We expect that gives a dynamical origin of the so-called “injection point s” introduced by Swiatecki et al in order to reproduce absolute values of measured cross sections for SHE. A formula for the slip is given in terms of physical parameters of the system, which confirms the results recently obtained with a Langevin equation, and permits us to compare various incident channels.

Furosemide (40 μg/min) was perfused directly into the renal artery of dogs in whom the femoral blood pressure was reduced (80 mm Hg) by aortic clamping above the renal arteries. This maneuver, which does not influence the intrarenal blood flow distribution, produced significant decreases of the urine volume, natriuresis, Ccreat, and CPAH, and prevented the marked diuresis normally produced by furosemide. Therefore the chances that systemic physiological changes occurred, secondary to large fluid movements, were minimized. In those conditions, however, furosemide produced a significant increase of the urine output and sodium excretion in the experimental kidney whereas Ccreat and CPAH were not affected. The outer cortical blood flow rate (ml/100 g-min) was modified neither by aortic constriction (562 ± 68 versus 569 ± 83) nor by the subsequent administration of furosemide (424 ± 70). The blood flow rate of the outer medulla in these three conditions remained unchanged (147 ± 52 versus 171 ± 44 versus 159 ± 54). The initial distribution of the radioactivity in each compartment remained comparable in the three conditions. In parallel with the results from the krypton-85 disappearance curves, the autoradiograms, silicone rubber casts, and EPAH did not suggest any change in the renal blood flow distribution secondary to furosemide administration.

This paper studies the evolution of wealth inequality in an economy with endogenous borrowing constraints. In the model economy, young agents need to borrow to finance human capital investments but cannot commit to repaying their loans. Creditors can punish defaulters by banishing them permanently from the credit market. At equilibrium, loan default is prevented by imposing a borrowing limit tied to the borrower's inheritance. The heterogeneity in inheritances translates into heterogeneity in borrowing limits: endogenously, some borrowers face a zero borrowing limit, and some are partly constrained, whereas others are unconstrained. Depending on the initial distribution of inheritances, it is possible that all lineages are attracted either to the zero-borrowing-limit steady state or to the unconstrained-borrowing steady state—long-run equality. It is also possible that some lineages end up in one steady state and the rest in the other—complete polarization.
