AbstractIn this study, a new optical method is presented to determine the concentrations of NaCl and glucose aqueous solutions by using a thermo-elastic optical indicator microscope. By measuring the microwave near-field distribution intensity, concentration changes of NaCl and glucose aqueous solutions were detected in the 0–100 mg/ml range, when exposed to microwave irradiation at 12 GHz frequency. Microwave near-field distribution intensity decreased as the NaCl or glucose concentration increased due to the changes of the absorption properties of aqueous solution. This method provides a novel approach for monitoring NaCl and glucose in biological liquids by using a CCD sensor capable of visualizing NaCl and glucose concentrations without scanning.

The simulated PM-spectrum fractal sea surfaces and the 3-D near-field distributed model of horn antenna are built, the near-field formulas of KA method are deduced. The near-field scattering coefficient and the Doppler echo signal of rough sea surfaces are calculated, the agreement with measured data proved the correctness and validity of the near-field scattering model.

This work presents a novel design of a bidirectional Inductive Power Transfer (IPT) system capable of continuous monitoring of cardiac pressure. The proposed system results from a robust electromagnetic coupling between an external reading coil and an implanted two-level (3D approach) inductor array. In this design, each coupling module follows a 13.56 MHz operating frequency, where both passive RCL networks are near field tuned. Among our main results, we obtained a Power Transfer Efficiency (PTE) of 94.1% across the 3.5 cm-thick composed biological tissue whereas the implanted coil array is about 50% of its conventional size. Since the resulting PTE efficiency is 40% higher, based on the optimized L and Q parameters, this novel approach could be used in other medical applications. This IPT system design is based on a low-cost thin film fabrication technology.

Near Field Communication (NFC) technology enables mobile phones to store important data safely and reliably. The data can be sent to another phone equipped with NFC or read by NFC reader. Through special applications the data can also be added, subtracted, or modified. This NFC capability allows the phone to be developed into a device that can store important data such as e-money or electronic medical records. In this research has been developed medical record system based on Near Field Communication (NFC). The results of alpha and beta testing show that the developed application has good performance.

In this paper, a parallel nonoverlapping and nonconformal domain decomposition method (DDM) is proposed for fast and accurate analysis of electrically large objects in the condition of limited resources. The formulation of nonoverlapping DDM for PEC bodies is derived from combined-field integral equation (CFIE), and an explicit boundary condition is applied to ensure the continuity of electric currents across the boundary. A parallel multilevel fast multipole algorithm (MLFMA) is extended to accelerate matrix-vector multiplications of subdomains as well as the coupling between them, and the coupling between different subdomains is computed in the manner of near field to avoid the storage of the mutual impedance. An improved adaptive direction partitioning scheme is applied to the oct-tree of MLFMA to achieve high parallel efficiency. Numerical examples demonstrate that the proposed method is able to simulate realistic problems with a maximum dimension greater than 2000 wavelengths.

This paper reports on the authors’ experiences with an exploratory prototype festival-wide social network. Unique 2D barcodes were applied to wristbands and mobile phones to uniquely identify the festival participants at the CO2PENHAGEN music festival in Denmark. The authors describe experiences from initial use of a set of social network applications involving participant profiles, a microblog and images shared on situated displays, and competitions created for the festival. The pilot study included 73 participants, each creating a unique profile. The novel approach had potential to enable anyone at the festival to participate in the festival-wide social network, as participants did not need any special hardware or mobile client application to be involved. The 2D barcodes was found to be a feasible low-cost approach for unique participant identification and social network interaction. Implications for the design of future systems of this nature are discussed.
