Several models are developed for the high-wavenumber portion of the spectral transfer function of scalar quantities advected by high-Reynolds-number, locally isotropic turbulent flow. These models are applicable for arbitrary Prandtl or Schmidt number, v/D, and the resultant scalar spectra are compared with several experiments having different v/D. The ‘bump’ in the temperature spectrum of air observed over land is shown to be due to a tendency toward a viscous-convective range and the presence of this bump is consistent with experiments for large v/D. The wavenumbers defining the transition between the inertial-convective range and viscous-convective range for asymptotically large v/D (denoted k* and k1* for the three- and one-dimensional spectra) are determined by comparison of the models with experiments. A measurement of the transitional wavenumber k1* [denoted (k1*)s] is found to depend on v/D and on any filter cut-off. On the basis of the k* values it is shown that measurements of β1 from temperature spectra in moderate Reynolds number turbulence in air (v/D = 0·72) maybe over-estimates and that the inertial-diffusive range of temperature fluctuations in mercury (v/D ≃ 0·02) is of very limited extent.

AbstractOne-dimensional models of exchange flows driven by horizontal density gradients are well known for performing poorly in situations with weak turbulent mixing. The main issue with these models is that the horizontal density gradient is usually imposed as a constant, leading to non-physically high stratification known as runaway stratification. Here, we propose two new parametrizations of the horizontal density gradient leading to one-dimensional models able to tackle strongly stratified exchange flows at high and low Schmidt number values. The models are extensively tested against results from laminar two-dimensional simulations and are shown to outperform the models using the classical constant parametrization for the horizontal density gradients. Four different flow regimes are found by exploring the parameter space defined by the gravitational Reynolds number Reg, the Schmidt number Sc, and the aspect ratio of the channel Γ. For small values of RegΓ, when diffusion dominates, all models perform well. However, as RegΓ increases, two clearly distinct regimes emerge depending on the Sc value, with an equally clear distinction of the performance of the one-dimensional models.

In recent years, to satisfy the more and more stringent energy efficiency and pollutants emission regulations of ship, which had been issued by the International Marine Organization (IMO), the combustion improvement of the two-stroke low-speed diesel engines has been paid much attention. The phenomenological combustion model, as an effective and economic approach, is widely used for parametric study on diesel engine combustion process. However, the fuel of two-stroke low-speed diesel engine is heavy oil, and there are few researches focused on the modeling of heavy oil spray. Therefore, a spray model that can describe the heavy oil spray evolution is needed. In this study, a one-dimensional discrete diesel spray model based on the conservation of the momentum flux and mass flow rate along the spray axis is modified for heavy oil. By in-depth analysis of physical properties of diesel and heavy oil, viscosity is found to be the main factor that results in the difference of the fuel concentration and velocity distribution over the spray cross-sectional area. According to the turbulent jet theory, the Schmidt number, which represents the capability of mass and momentum diffusion, proves to be inversely related to fuel viscosity. In order to involve the viscosity effects into the one-dimensional diesel spray model, the relation between viscosity and Schmidt number is derived as a simple formulation to account for the fuel concentration and velocity distribution. The calculation of heavy oil spray penetration is validated by the experiment data, and the results shows that the improved spray model has the capability to predict the propagation of heavy oil spray.

“Dynamical mixing”, i.e. relaxation of a stellar phase space distribution through interaction with the mean gravitational field, is numerically investigated for a one-dimensional self-gravitating stellar gas. Qualitative results are presented in the form of a motion picture of the flow of phase points (representing homogeneous slabs of stars) in two-dimensional phase space.

Recent progress in the electron-mirror microscopy (EMM), e.g., an improvement of its resolving power together with an increase of the magnification makes it useful for investigating the ferroelectric domain physics. English has recently observed the domain texture in the surface layer of BaTiO3. The present authors ) have developed a theory by which one can evaluate small one-dimensional electric fields and/or topographic step heights in the crystal surfaces from their EMM pictures. This theory was applied to a quantitative study of the surface pattern of BaTiO3).

The synaptic connections in cat retina that link photoreceptors to ganglion cells have been analyzed quantitatively. Our approach has been to prepare serial, ultrathin sections and photograph en montage at low magnification (˜2000X) in the electron microscope. Six series, 100-300 sections long, have been prepared over the last decade. They derive from different cats but always from the same region of retina, about one degree from the center of the visual axis. The material has been analyzed by reconstructing adjacent neurons in each array and then identifying systematically the synaptic connections between arrays. Most reconstructions were done manually by tracing the outlines of processes in successive sections onto acetate sheets aligned on a cartoonist's jig. The tracings were then digitized, stacked by computer, and printed with the hidden lines removed. The results have provided rather than the usual one-dimensional account of pathways, a three-dimensional account of circuits. From this has emerged insight into the functional architecture.

Since the first discovery of high Tc Bi-Sr-Ca-Cu-O superconductor by Maeda et al, many EM works have been done on it. The results show that the superconducting phases have a type of ordered layer structures similar to that in Y-Ba-Cu-O system formulated in Bi2Sr2Can−1CunO2n+4 (n=1,2,3) (simply called 22(n-1) phase) with lattice constants of a=0.358, b=0.382nm but the length of c being different according to the different value of n in the formulate. Unlike the twin structure observed in the Y-Ba-Cu-O system, there is an incommensurate modulated structure in the superconducting phases of Bi system superconductors. Modulated wavelengths of both 1.3 and 2.7 nm have been observed in the 2212 phase. This communication mainly presents the intergrowth of these two kinds of one-dimensional modulated structures in 2212 phase.

Conducting polymers comprises a new class of materials achieving electrical conductivities which rival those of the best metals. The parent compounds (conjugated polymers) are quasi-one-dimensional semiconductors. These polymers can be doped by electron acceptors or electron donors. The prototype of these materials is polyacetylene (PA). There are various other conjugated polymers such as polyparaphenylene, polyphenylenevinylene, polypoyrrole or polythiophene. The doped systems, i.e. the conducting polymers, have intersting potential technological applications such as replacement of conventional metals in electronic shielding and antistatic equipment, rechargable batteries, and flexible light emitting diodes.Although these systems have been investigated almost 20 years, the electronic structure of the doped metallic systems is not clear and even the reason for the gap in undoped semiconducting systems is under discussion.
