The rheological characteristics of melts of polyarylsulphone sulphides of domestic grades were investigated in the temperature range 240–360°C. Full curves of heat stability were obtained, and formulae were proposed for their description. Polyarylsulphone sulphides (PSPSs) are heat-resistant polymers of structural designation of the polysulphone (PSP) class, the domestic production technology of which was developed at OAO “Institut plastmass”, which makes it possible to carry out the production of a wide grade range of PSP of different polymer chain structure and molecular weight. The main problem in the processing of PSPSs is their high melt viscosity and fairly low flow. Increase in the processing temperature lowers their melt viscosity, but there is then the danger of thermooxidative degradation of the polymer and consequently of deterioration in the service characteristics and appearance of articles. The aim of this work was to investigate the rheological characteristics and to obtain the full curve of heat stability for domestic grades of PSPSs and PSP of different molecular weight in a wide processing temperature range.

Abstract Perylenes and perinones are separate groups of pigments categorized within the carbonyl chemical class. The two pigment groups show similarities, for example, in their chemical structural features and, to an extent, in their technical and application properties as high-performance organic pigments. Perylenes constitute a series of firmly established high-performance pigments, offering red and violet colors, and also extending to black. Synthetically, they are derived from perylene-1,4,5,8-tetracarboxylic acid. The perylenes tend to be quite expensive pigments, but their high levels of fastness properties mean that they are suitable for highly demanding applications. In particular, they offer very high heat stability. Two perinone pigments are used commercially. In their synthesis from naphthalene-1,4,5,8-tetracarboxylic acid, they are formed as mixtures of the two isomers, which can be separated. The trans isomer, CI Pigment Orange 43, is a highly important commercial pigment, especially for plastics, while the cis isomer, CI Pigment Red 194, is bordeaux in color and is of much lesser importance. The perinone, CI Pigment Orange 43, provides a brilliant orange color and has very good fastness properties. Its commercial manufacture involves a challenging multistage procedure and consequently it is one of the most expensive organic pigments on the market.

ABSTRACT Two cyclic AMP phosphodiesterase enzymes (E.C.3.1.4.17) are present in homogenates of adult Drosophila melanogaster. The two enzymes differ from one another in heat stability, affinity for Mg++, Ca++ activation and molecular weight. They do not differ markedly in their affinities for cyclic AMP, and both exhibit anomalous Michaelis-Menten kinetics. The more heatlabile enzyme is controlled in a dosage-dependent manner by chromomere 3D4 of the X chromosome and is absent in flies that are deficient for chromomere 3D4. Chromomere 3D4 is also necessary for the maintenance of normal cAMP levels, for male fertility, and for normal female fertility and oogenesis. The structural gene(s) for the more heat-stable enzyme is located outside of chromomeres 3C12-3D4. Whether 3D4 contains a structural gene, or a regulatory gene necessary for the presence of the labile enzyme, remains to be determined.

SUMMARYAn examination has been made of the heat stability characteristics of skim-milk concentrate prepared by ultrafiltration (UF). Concentrate prepared by UF was found to be more stable than that prepared by conventional evaporation. In contrast to conventional concentrate, the heat stability of UF concentrate was not appreciably affected by forewarming or addition of permitted stabilizers, but the effect of addition of urea was generally the same for both UF and conventional concentrates; an increase in heat stability was obtained if the milk total solids level was less than 14%. As with conventional concentrate, addition of simple aldehydes induced large increases in the heat stability of UF concentrate. It is suggested that a novel range of sterile milk products could be prepared from UF concentrates. Because of the high protein and low lactose contents of these concentrates, the products might be nutritionally more attractive than those prepared from conventional concentrates.

ABSTRACT Replication-defective adenovirus (Ad) vectors can vary considerably in genome length, but whether this affects virion stability has not been investigated. Helper-dependent Ad vectors with a genome size of ∼30 kb were 100-fold more sensitive to heat inactivation than their parental helper virus (>36 kb), and increasing the genome size of the vector significantly improved heat stability. A similar relationship between genome size and stability existed for Ad with early region 1 deleted. Loss of infectivity was due to release of vertex proteins, followed by disintegration of the capsid. Thus, not only does the viral DNA encode all of the heritable information essential for virus replication, it also plays a critical role in maintaining capsid strength and integrity.
