. The photocatalytic activity of three systems, promising for chemical water purification technologies, was experimentally compared, based on a combination of titanium dioxide/(Fe(II, III)), applying to the model oxidation reaction of methylorange organic dye in an aqueous medium. Herewith the cases of photocatalytic systems were investigated, which are based on: a) titania hydrosol obtained by hydrolysis of titanium isobutylate; b) a similar hydrosol with addition of Fe(III) ions; c) suspension of ilmenite powder based on FeTiO3. As a result of the investigation, the increase of the rate of destruction of methylorange by more than two times was found in the system with the introduction of a small amount of iron ions into initial suspension of the TiO2 hydrosol (at the obtaining a medium with the Fe3+ concentration up to 3.7 × 10–5 M). In the photocatalytic system, based on the suspension of pretreated (with suphation and calcination) ilmenite powder, enough high photocatalytic activity (the degree of methylorange decomposition up to 77 %) was measured but at a higher exposure than for the case of systems based on the TiO2 hydrosol. For the photocatalytic systems of the type being investigated, a possible mechanism of increasing their oxidative activity was briefly considered, which requires an additional physico-chemical analysis.

AbstractA novel three-dimensional Cd(II) coordination framework, [Cd(PTA)(BTBP)0.5 · H2O]n (1) (BTBP =  4,4′-bis(1,2,4-triazol-1-ylmethyl)biphenyl; H2PTA = p-phthalic acid), has been prepared and characterized through IR spectroscopy, elemental and thermal analysis, and single-crystal X-ray diffraction. The complex is a 5-connected network with the {45 · 66} topology based on Cd-μ2-H2O-Cd chains. It exhibits strong fluorescent emission in the solid state at room temperature. Moreover, complex 1 shows high photocatalytic activity in the degradation of methylene blue under UV irradiation.

A unique structural transformation of a lepidocrocite-type layered titanate, K0.8Ti1.73Li0.27O4, into a rutile-type TiO2 has recently been realized via dilute HCl treatment and subsequent drying at room temperature for producing rutile-nanoparticle-decorated protonated layered titanate exhibiting highly efficient photocatalytic activity. Herein, the authors report synthesis of a lepidocrocite-type layered cesium titanate with nominal compositions of C s 0.7 T i 1.825 ‐ x / 2 N i x □ 0.175 ‐ x / 2 O 4 ( x = 0 , 0.05, 0.1, and 0.35) through solid-state reactions of Cs2CO3, TiO2, and Ni(CH3COO)2·4H2O at different temperatures (600 or 800°C), followed by treatment with dilute HCl and subsequent drying to produce a Ni-doped protonated layered titanate/TiO2 composite. C s 0.7 T i 1.825 ‐ x / 2 N i x □ 0.175 ‐ x / 2 O 4 with an optimized Ni content obtained at a lower temperature was converted into a Ni-doped protonated layered titanate/TiO2 composite to exhibit high photocatalytic activity for NO x decomposition reactions.

Different amounts of a stable aqueous TiO2 hydrosol were used to fabricate paper sheets having photocatalytic activity. The TiO2 hydrosol was prepared in aqueous medium using titanium butoxide as precursor and acetic acid as catalyst for the hydrolysis of titanium butoxide. An aging process at room temperature and atmospheric pressure was finally applied to obtain crystalline anatase TiO2 hydrosol. The effects of different TiO2 hydrosol loadings on the mechanical strength and barrier properties of modified paper sheets were investigated in detail. The photocatalytic behavior of TiO2-modified paper sheets was investigated as well using methylene blue (MB) as target pollutant.
