Graphene oxide plays a dual role as active metal-free acid catalyst and as non-toxic oxidant for benzothiazole and benzimidazole synthesis. Isolated partially reduced graphene oxide was re-oxidized to regenerate the catalyst and restore its activity.

New metal-free, magnesium and zinc azaphthalocyanines ( AzaPc ) were prepared from 6-(3-tert-butylsulfany1-5,6-dicyanopyrazine-2-ylamino)hexanoic acid and its butylester and N,N-diethylamide. Their singlet oxygen production was measured by a dye-sensitized photooxidation of 1,3-diphenylisobenzofuran ( DPBF ) and ΦΔ values were calculated. It was found that the presence of carboxylic acid in the structure of AzaPc decreases their singlet oxygen production. Singlet oxygen activity of the newly prepared compounds (containing mixed alkylamino and alkylsulfanyl peripheral substituents) lies between purely alkylsulfanyl and alkylamino derivatives of AzaPc . This fact further supports previously proposed structure-activity relationships, where alkylsulfanyl derivatives belong to the best singlet oxygen producers while the presence of alkylamino substituents in the structure rapidly decreases their photodynamic properties.

The first example of solvent-free, organocatalyzed, polymerization of 1,3-dioxolan-4-ones, used as easily accessible monomers for the synthesis of polylactic acid (PLA), is described here. An optimization of reaction conditions was carried out, with p-toluensulfonic acid emerging as the most efficient Brønsted acid catalyst. The reactivity of the monomers in the tested conditions was studied following the monomer conversion by 1H NMR and the molecular weight growth by SEC analysis. A double activation polymerization mechanism was proposed, pointing out the key role of the acid catalyst. The formation of acetal bridges was demonstrated, to different extents depending on the nature of the aldehyde or ketone employed for lactic acid protection. The polymer shows complete retention of stereochemistry, as well as good thermal properties and good polydispersity, albeit modest molecular weight.

As a part of our ongoing synthetic quest to expand the frontiers of contemporary medicinal chemistry, we now report an expedient synthesis of a potentially useful bicyclo[1.1.1]pentane building block, 3-(pyrazin-2-yl)bicyclo[1.1.1]pentane-1-carboxylic acid. This report also showcases the application of this motif as a “spacer” probe in a biological study.
