In vertical continuous casting machines the liquid steel from the tundish is poured into the mold through the Submerged Entry Nozzle (SEN). The shape and direction of the SEN exit jets affect the liquid steel dynamics inside the mold. This work quantifies the effect of the SEN pool on the principal characteristics of the jets emerging from it, precisely, the shape, the spread angles, and the mold impact point. Experimental and numerical simulations were carried out using a SEN simplified model, a square-shaped bore nozzle with square-shaped outlet ports whose length is minimal. These experiments showed two well-defined behaviors. When a single vortex dominates the hydrodynamics inside the simplified SEN, the exit jets spread out and are misaligned about the mold’s central plane. On the contrary, when the inner flow pattern shows two vortexes, the exit jets are compact and parallel to the mold wide walls. The measured difference on the jet’s falling angles is 5°, approximately, which implies that in an actual casting machine, the impingement point at the narrow mold wall would have a variation of 0.150 m. This hydrodynamic analysis would help design new SENs for continuous casting machines that improve steel quality.

According to the rule of non-sinusoidal oscillation of continuous casting mold, a mathematical model was established to study the effects of oscillation parameters on the consumption rate of mold flux. The results indicated that the mold flux consumption rate is remarkably affected by the non-sinusoidal factor. This proves that the non-sinusoidal oscillation of mold contributes to increase the flux consumption. Moreover, the amplitude and frequency of mold oscillation have effects on mold flux consumption rate. The non-sinusoidal oscillation parameters must be optimized.

The paper deals with the industrial test of eddy current device for direct metal level control under continuous casting of steel using mold flux. The new algorithm of detection meniscus level has been proposed. The algorithm consists of selecting of a signal variable component caused by oscillation of steel meniscus. The way of filtering the noise from electromagnetic stirrer based on the comb filter application has been developed. The paper deals with the industrial test of eddy current sensor for molten metal level detecting under continuous casting of steel using mold flux. The new algorithm of detection meniscus level has been proposed. The algorithm consists of extracting the signal variable component caused by oscillations of steel meniscus which are intended to reduce friction on the strand surface. The way of filtering the noise from electromagnetic stirrer based on the comb filter application has been developed. It has been proven that the developed algorithm can completely remove the influence of the electromagnetic stirrer field. The industrial test results show that the readings of eddy current and radioactive isotope sensor are synchronous both in a stationary casting mode and in case of fast metal level change. Moreover the eddy current steel level sensor has high precision of steel level measurement, quick response time and low noise level free from the influence of mold flux.

According to ULCS production practice in domestic steel,in combination with laboratorial data, this paper analyzes the influence factors of ULCS carbonization. The statistical results shows that carburization of ultra-low carbon steel is affected by mold flux、continuous casting process and refractory, and some corresponding control measures are put forward.
