The practice of placing deprived children having least or no emotional and material resources, in orphanages has since long been prevailing in socio -economically poor Asian countries. A sample of 30 children residing in orphanage in district Anantnag in the age group of 13-18 years was selected for the present study. Most of the children were found socially and psychologically disturbed. As per Indian Academy Paediatrics (IAP) classification with respect to weight for age the condition was not bad that as approximately 67% percent of the children were found to be normal. In the same way height for age as per Waterloo’s classification shown that more than half of the children were normal. On clinical examination approximately 47% of children were normal, while as rest were suffering from dispigmentation of hair, moon face, xerosis of skin cheilosis, magenta tongue, spongy bleeding gums, oedema, conjuctival xerosis, and mottled dental enamel. The findings indicated that nutritional intake was deficient for all nutrients when compared to, Recommended Daily Allowances Chart (RDA) for all age groups which may be linked to poor planning of menus in orphanages.

The need to identify wood by its anatomical features requires a detailed analysis of all the elements that make it up. This is a significant problem of structural wood science, the most general and complete solution of which is yet to be sought. In recent years, increasing attention has been paid to the use of computer vision methods to automate processes such as the detection, identification, and classification of different tissues and different tree species. The more successful use of these methods in wood anatomy requires a more precise and comprehensive definition of the anatomical elements, according to their geometric and topological characteristics. In this article, we conduct a detailed analysis of the limits of variation of the location and grouping of vessels in the observed microscopic samples. The present development offers criteria and quantitative indicators for defining the terms shape, location, and group of wood tissues. It is proposed to differentiate the quantitative indicators of the vessels depending on their geometric and topological characteristics. Thus, with the help of computer vision technics, it will be possible to establish topological characteristics of wood vessels, the extraction of which would be used to develop an algorithm for the automatic classification of tree species.

Background: Micronutrient deficiencies largely affect pediatric population worldwide. In India, pediatric category is more prone to iron deficiency, the most common micronutrient deficiency disorder which produces haematological as well as non-hematological disturbances. This study aimed to identify the impact of iron deficiency on cognitive function and anthropometric changes in pediatric populations.Methods: A hospital based, prospective observational study was conducted at Department of Pediatrics in Rajah Muthiah Medical College and Hospital, 127 participants were enrolled in this study. BKT kit of Intelligence, Electronic weighing machine, Stadiometer, BMI Calculator by CDC guidelines and patient’s haemoglobin values were used in this study.Results: Out of 127 patients, 66 patients had iron deficiency with anemia and remaining 61 had iron deficiency without anemia. Cognitive behaviour was assessed based on the norms and majority were under the category- dull average (52 patients) followed by average (45 patients) and other’s had single digit patients. Growth charts of Indian Academy of Pediatrics were used to assess anthropometric characteristics and majority were in the underweight category (61.4%) followed by average category (38.6 %).Conclusions: Low cognitive scores and underweight were found in participants with low haemoglobin levels. Hence, our study provides convincing evidence that iron plays a vital role in the cognition, motor and physical growth. Awareness about the importance of iron and the health issues associated with its deficiency was also provided to the participants.
