Unidirectional carbon fiber-reinforced epoxy (UCFRE) is suffering from weak transverse mechanical properties and through-thickness properties. The effect of different amount (0.1, 0.3 and 0.5 phr which is proportional to 0.09, 0.27 and 0.46 wt%, respectively) of multiwall carbon nanotube (MWCNT), on transverse tensile properties, flexural strength, fracture toughness in transverse and longitudinal fiber directions, interlaminar shear strength and lap shear strength of UCFRE has been investigated. Dicyandiamide was used as a thermal curing agent of epoxy resin. MWCNT was dispersed in the epoxy resin by ultrasonic instrument and their dispersion state was investigated by scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The curing behavior of epoxy resin and its nanocomposites was assessed by differential scanning calorimetry. Results show that transverse tensile strength, modulus and strain-at-break were increased by 28.5%, 25% and 14%, respectively by adding 0.1 phr of MWCNT. Longitudinal flexural properties of UCFRE was not changed by adding different amount of MWCNT. Although longitudinal flexural strength was increased by 5% by adding 0.1 phr of MWCNT. Fracture toughness in transverse and longitudinal fiber directions was increased by 39% and 9%, respectively at 0.3 phr of MWCNT. Results also show that interlaminar shear strength and lap shear strength were increased at 0.3 phr of MWCNT by 8% and 5%, respectively. These increases in mechanical properties were due to the good adhesion of fibers to the matrix, interlocking and toughening action of MWCNT as revealed by SEM.

The development of composite materials is increasingly widespread, which require superior mechanical properties. From many studies, it is found that the mechanical properties of composite materials are influenced by various factors, including the reinforcement content, both in the form of fibers and particle powder. However, those studies have not investigated the effect of the hardener weight fraction on the mechanical properties of resin composite materials. Even though its function as a hardener is likely to affect its mechanical properties, it might obtain the optimum composition of the reinforcing content and hardener fraction to get the specific mechanical properties. This study examines the effect of hardener weight fraction combined with fiber powder content on mechanical properties of EPR-174 epoxy resin matrix composite and determines the optimum of Them. The research was conducted by testing a sample of composite matrix resin material reinforced with coconut fiber powder. The Powder content was made in 3 levels, i.e.: 6%, 8%, and 10%. While the hardener fraction of resin was made in 3 levels, i.e.: 0.4, 0.5, and 0.6. The test results showed that pure resin had the lowest impact strength of 1.37 kJ/m2. The specimen with a fiber powder content of 6% has the highest impact strength i.e.: 4.92 kJ/m2. The hardener fraction of 0.5 has the highest impact strength i.e.: 4.55 kJ/m2. The fiber powder content of 8% produced the highest shear strength i.e.: 1.00 MPa. Meanwhile, the hardener fraction of 0.6 has the highest shear strength i.e.: 2.03 MPa.

As one of the major contributors to the early failures of steel bridge deck pavements, the bonding between steel and asphalt overlay has long been a troublesome issue. In this paper, a novel composite bonding structure was introduced consisting of epoxy resin micaceous iron oxide (EMIO) primer, solvent-free epoxy resin waterproof layer, and ethylene-vinyl acetate (EVA) hot melt pellets. A series of strength tests were performed to study its mechanical properties, including pull-off strength tests, dumbbell tensile tests, lap shear tests, direct tension tests, and 45°-inclined shear tests. The results suggested that the bonding structure exhibited fair bonding strength, tensile strength, and shear strength. Anisotropic behaviour was also observed at high temperatures. For epoxy resin waterproof layer, the loss of bonding strength, tensile strength, and shear strength at 60°C was 70%, 35%, and 39%, respectively. Subsequent pavement performance-oriented tests included five-point bending tests and accelerated wheel tracking tests. The impacts of bonding on fatigue resistance and rutting propagation were studied. It was found that the proposed bonding structure could provide a durable and well-bonded interface and was thus beneficial to prolong the fatigue lives of asphalt overlay. The choice of bonding materials was found irrelevant to the ultimate rutting depth of pavements. But the bonding combination of epoxy resin waterproof and EVA pellets could delay the early-stage rutting propagation.

In this study, the influence of the open bath and closed-injection pultrusion (CIP) processing methods of epoxy resins on the quality of glass fiber composites was investigated. In addition to the state-of-the-art epoxy resin system with long pot life, new resin systems with short pot life have recently been developed. These systems require processing by closed-injection pultrusion. The epoxies with long pot life allow both processing variants. The experimental work was carried out with two types of injection and impregnation chambers (ii_chamber), namely with a conical and a teardrop design. Fully impregnated composites, which were used for further analyses, could be produced by using the conical ii_chamber. The composite properties of the open bath and the conical ii_chamber impregnation methods were compared. No significant influence on the bending stress could be determined; the interlaminar shear strength was up to 10% better with open bath impregnation than with ii_chamber. For the composites investigated, it was shown that the open bath and ii_chamber impregnation methods can be used to produce parts with partially comparable properties, as demonstrated for the epoxy formulation with long pot life. These results indicate that processing of epoxy systems with a short pot life is also possible by closed-injection pultrusion. Furthermore, the influence on the composite properties of the time interval between the mixing of an epoxy resin and processing in an open bath was investigated. No significant effect on the bending stress and interlaminar shear strength could be determined.

This study examined the influence mechanism of temperature on the interfacial shear strength (IFSS) between carbon fiber (CF) and epoxy resin (EP) matrices under various thermal loads using experimental and numerical simulation methods. To evaluate the change in IFSS as a function of the increase in temperature, a microbond test was performed under controlled temperature environment from 23°C to 150°C. The experimental results showed that IFSS values of CF/EP reduce significantly when the temperature reaches near glass transition temperature. To interpret the effect of thermal loads on IFSS, a thermal-mechanical coupling finite element model was used to simulate the process of fiber pull-out from EP. The results revealed that temperature dependence of IFSS is linked to modulus of the matrix as well as to the coefficients of thermal expansion of the fiber and matrix.
