We analyze the path from cryptocurrencies to official Central Bank Digital Currencies (CBDCs), to shed some light on the ultimate dematerialization of money. To that end, we made an extensive search that resulted in a review of more than 100 academic and grey literature references, including official positions from central banks. We present and discuss the characteristics of the different CBDC variants being considered—namely, wholesale, retail, and, for the latter, the account-based, and token-based—as well as ongoing pilots, scenarios of interoperability, and open issues. Our contribution enables decision-makers and society at large to understand the potential advantages and risks of introducing CBDCs, and how these vary according to many technical and economic design choices. The practical implication is that a debate becomes possible about the trade-offs that the stakeholders are willing to accept.

The global economy continues to grow, albeit mainly due to large-scale support measures from governments and regulators. Moreover, the latter are not sure about the prospects for such development, since the economies do not demonstrate the potential for independent growth. As a result, in order to stimulate it, regulators are forced to expand the range of their tools, mechanisms, approaches, otherwise the risks to the stability of the global financial and economic system increase. All this is happening against the background of negative rates, which have become virtually ubiquitous and persist for a long time. New growth records are being set in the stock markets, and their gap from the real economy is growing. A number of sectors are beginning to dominate, forming distortions and bubbles in the markets. In such conditions, the importance of digital money, ecosystems, etc. increases. Moreover, the faster and more efficiently regulators can integrate into these formats, the more successful business, the population, and the economy as a whole will be.

ABSTRACTThe current adoption of financial technology (fintech) payment by Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs) is motivated by the trend of using digital money. The purpose of this study is to test and analyze empirically the factors that influence the intention of SMEs to use fintech payments. This study uses a quantitative method by distributing surveys to 94 MSMEs in the Magelang using convenience sampling technique. The test results with SEM-PLS show that the perceived usefulness and the perception of trust have an effect on attitudes. Risk perception and trust affect the intention to use fintech payment. Meanwhile, for ease of use, perception and risk perception have no effect on attitudes and perceived usefulness. Attitudes have no effect on intentions to use fintech payment. Based on the calculation of the path value, the most powerful factor to influence the intention to use fintech payment is the perception of trust.Keywords: fintech payment, TAM, MSMEABSTRAKAdopsi terkini mengenai pembayaran melalui financial technology (fintech) oleh Usaha Mikro, Kecil dan Menengah (UMKM) dilatarbelakangi oleh tren penggunaan uang digital. Penelitian ini menggunakan metode kuantitatif dengan menyebarkan survei kepada 94 UMKM di Magelang dengan menggunakan teknik convenience sampling. Hasil pengujian dengan SEM-PLS menunjukkan bahwa persepsi manfaat dan persepsi kepercayaan berpengaruh terhadap sikap. Persepsi risiko dan kepercayaan mempengaruhi niat untuk menggunakan pembayaran fintech. Sedangkan untuk kemudahan penggunaan, persepsi dan persepsi risiko tidak berpengaruh terhadap sikap dan manfaat yang dirasakan. Sikap tidak berpengaruh terhadap niat menggunakan fintech payment. Berdasarkan perhitungan path value, faktor yang paling kuat mempengaruhi niat menggunakan fintech payment adalah persepsi kepercayaan.Kata kunci: fintech payment, TAM, UMKM

Payments systems around the world are evolving with the emergence of digital money issued by private firms and central banks. We provide a conceptual framework to compare and contrast traditional forms of money with their new digital equivalents. We suggest that some forms of digital money, while less stable as a store of value, could be rapidly adopted given their advantages as a means of payment. We review the benefits and risks that would emerge. One approach to managing risks would be to require full backing of selected digital money with central bank reserves. We call the arrangement synthetic central bank digital currency (sCBDC), a private-public partnership that combines the advantages of private sector innovation and customer orientation with the safety and stability of central bank–backed money. We offer policy considerations, directions for research, and an overview of the literature to date. The analysis of digital currencies is an exciting new field crossing into monetary and financial economics that will reshape the monetary and financial systems for many years to come. Recently, many non-state money systems have appeared based on digital cryptocurrencies. The disadvantages of digital cryptocurrencies are the separation from real production, the inequality of participants, the lack of control by state bodies, and the security problem. Digital money becomes full-fledged only when it is connected with the real economy and financially secured. The author proposes the introduction of a material digital energy economic equivalent. Based on the digital energy of the economic equivalent, it is proposed to form a digital high-tech platform economy of healthy needs, like the economy of the future. Platform economy is an economic activity based on platforms, which are understood as online systems that provide comprehensive standard solutions for interaction between users, including commercial transactions and innovative solutions. It is proposed to measure the efficiency of the future economy by economic energy intensity. Energy intensity is represented by a certain amount of energy of economic equivalent, in accordance with the law of energy conservation. Reliance on a materially supported digital energy economic equivalent, as a new currency, makes a digital high-tech platform economy of healthy needs synergistic, efficient, sustainable, safe, ecological, open, controlled by society, without speculative operations, health supportive, accurately measured through digital energy intensity. Material digital energy intensity will avoid the speculative shortcomings of existing digital money systems. To this end, governments establish a procedure for regulating the energy economy with an economic equivalent, as an impact on public relations in order to streamline and stabilize them, in order to realize the necessary needs of society in accordance with the available resources. The status of an energy economic equivalent means recognition by the economic community as universal equivalent.
