Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19), caused by severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2), a novel coronavirus in humans, has expanded globally over the past year. COVID-19 remains an important subject of intensive research owing to its huge impact on economic and public health globally. Based on historical archives, the first coronavirus-related disease recorded was possibly animal-related, a case of feline infectious peritonitis described as early as 1912. Despite over a century of documented coronaviruses in animals, the global animal industry still suffers from outbreaks. Knowledge and experience handling animal coronaviruses provide a valuable tool to complement our understanding of the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic. In this review, we present an overview of coronaviruses, clinical signs, COVID-19 in animals, genome organization and recombination, immunopathogenesis, transmission, viral shedding, diagnosis, treatment, and prevention. By drawing parallels between COVID-19 in animals and humans, we provide perspectives on the pathophysiological mechanisms by which coronaviruses cause diseases in both animals and humans, providing a critical basis for the development of effective vaccines and therapeutics against these deadly viruses.

AbstractEven though Italy officially joined the IAU in 1921, Italian astronomers were involved in its birth as early as 1919, when Annibale Riccò, Director of the Astrophysical Observatory of Catania, proposed to the IAU Committee to hold its first General Assembly in Rome. This contribution will analyze the role played by Italian astronomers in the development of the IAU from its foundation to the Second World War. The recent project of reordering of the astronomical historical archives in Italy permits for the first time a more in-depth study of the relations between Italian astronomers and the international scientific community.

The article focuses on the policy conducted by the Management Board of Siberian Merchant Bank in reference to its regional branches from 1873 to 1920 using the example of the Irkutsk Branch. The policy included circulars and instructions that were sent to the branches and were supposed to regulate their activity in order to comply with the Bank’s general development strategy. The documents, regulating the activity of regional branches, are kept mainly in historical archives of Irkutsk and St. Petersburg. Some of the circulars are general in nature, some of them relate to the Irkutsk Branch and its activity. The research reviewed the documentary materials, defining the key directions and peculiarities of the Bank’s policy concerning to the regional branches. The Bank’s policy was based on the detailed analysis of the economic situation in the region under the coverage of its activity. The Management Board thoroughly studied all the local periodicals, which the regional branches sent to them. A special focus in the article is given to the Bank’s policy toward regional Accounting Committees, which was cautious and rather distrustful. It should be mentioned that social policy toward its employees was not alien to the Management Board of Siberian Merchant Bank. It could include provision of housing and various financial incentives. As a conclusion, in general the Bank’s policy toward regional branches can be described as pragmatic, moderate, but not excluding its socially-oriented approach.

Water management and the nation’s resources: the Federal Board of Material Improvements, Ciudad Juarez, Chihuahua, 1931-1936The government constituted the Federal Board of Material Improvements in order to manage and control the economic resources and the construction of public works at México’s borders and ports. The general purpose of this research was to analyze how this agency was established and operated in Ciudad Juarez, in the context of the centralization/federalization of the country’s water resources, from 1931 to 1936, and, to this end, the historical archives were reviewed. One of the study’s limitations was the lack of background information about the management of the water resources in this town. Its contribution broadens the scarce existing knowledge about the boards’ functioning at the borders. Among the findings made, it can be mentioned that in the municipality of Juarez the loss of autonomy concerning water management was accompanied by a material and economic dispossession, in which several government institutions and agencies participated.

There is no doubt that property inventories provide invaluable information about the lexicon of everyday life. Motezuma, a Mexica opera by Antonio Vivaldi and Girolamo GiustiAbstractThis article discusses the theatrical aspects involved in the only performance of the opera Motezuma by the composer Antonio Vivaldi, which premiered at the Sant’Angelo theater in Venice in 1733.
