Reactive power compensation utilizing SVC and STATCOM is the most important method to improve power quality. In this paper, the technical features of SVC and STATCOM are introduced and then a power system in enterprises is used as an example in order to show effectiveness of SVC and STATCOM. Determination of location where SVC and STATCOM should be installed and their capacity is important for enhancement of power system voltage stability. Considering different kind of failure in power grid in enterprises, this paper gives analysis of voltage changes and motor load losses of the power system, on the meantime taking into account of the influence of external grid failure. Based on PSD-BPA software and mathematical model, the optimal design program of reactive power compensation utilizing STATCOM is determined by comparing effectiveness of SVC and STATCOM. Test results show very encouraging result.

With the increasing demands of power quality, high-quality power supply has become a necessary condition of modern social life. Power quality problems include voltage sag/swell, voltage unbalance and harmonics. To solve the above problem, a multi objective reactive power compensation device considering fault current limiting is designed, which can provide a certain degree of reactive power compensation to solve multi-objective system powered composite power quality problems during the normal working of the power system, and be able to quickly to limit the short-circuit current mode switching when power system under fault conditions. Finally, on the basis of theoretical analysis, experiments and simulations confirmed the correctness and effectiveness of the control strategy.

Dynamic reactive power optimization of power system is an important means to ensure grid economic safety. Unlike static reactive power optimization, dynamic reactive power optimization has to consider the reactive power compensation devices switches and number of constraints of transformer tap stalls. The number of constraints undermine the independence of each period, each time reactive power optimization scheduling interrelated, so dynamic reactive power optimization must be considered from the entire period of time to compensate the number of constraints of the devices, and how to deal with action number of constraints is difficulty and focus of solving dynamic reactive power optimization of the power system.

Flexible AC transmission technology (FACTS) is a new technology developed in recent years. It use power electronic technology and modern control technology to achieve fast control for AC transmission system parameter and structure [, to achieve the rational allocation of transmission power, reduce the power loss and the cost of power generation, greatly improve the stability and reliability of the system. STATCOM is based on the principle of reactive power compensation, using full-controlled switching devices to compose self-commutated inventer, complemented by small-capacity storage elements constitute reactive power compensation device. Its role in the power system is the compensation of reactive power, maintain the voltage of the connection point, improve system voltage stability, and improve the steady performance and dynamic performance of the system.

In the present rural power grid reconstruction project ,according to the problems of capacitor reactive power compensation in rural small substation. Take a small substation for instance, according to its operation and control method, set the criterion of the capacitor bank switching. A new high reliability, flexible reactive power compensation control device based on s7-200 PLC is designed. It plays an important role in improving the power supply , guaranteeing the quality of voltage, reducing the loss of rural power gid.
