This paper develops three theses on a competency-based approach during and after the COVID-19 crisis. These theses are based on the following empirical findings: case insights into the procurement of protective gear in Germany, the supplier shortage, which was a problem even before the crisis, and a quantitative view on the extended supply chain challenges in public procurement, including the decreasing number of bidders and an overly narrow view on supply chain partners. A key finding is that while the COVID-19 crisis has uncovered the problems of public procurement, the root causes lie more deeply in public procurement capabilities. As a result, this paper promotes extended public buyer competencies based on a European Framework, evidence-based decision-making in public procurement and the use of digital technologies to improve the security of supplies.

The study considers digital supply management from the perspective of the involvement in international trade. A SWOT analysis of the concept has been carried out; the concept strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, and threats have been highlighted. The hypothesis has been thoroughly considered through the example of the following countries: the Russian Federation (RF), the People's Republic of China, and the Federal Republic of Germany (FRG); in particular, the correlation between the volume of external traffic and the investment in SCM software was built. It has been revealed that in some countries an increase in the volume of external traffic due to an increase in investment in SCM software is associated with the complication and globalization of supply chains, which increases the competitiveness of goods and services of these countries. A composite index that takes into account the efficiency of the supply chain using digital technologies has been developed.

The COVID-19 pandemic has negatively affected the small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) in a significant manner. It has thrown some SMEs into a financial crunch, forced them to reduce/remove their workforce, hampered production due to prolonged lockdowns, halted their logistics and supply chain activities, and delayed their delivery schedules enormously. The revival of the SME sector is very important for the survival of the economy. One of the most important aspects of this revival strategy would be to innovate their existing supply chains for more visibility, transparency, and robustness through the adoption of affordable digital technologies. In spite of advanced studies in SC innovation, the in-depth studies related to this area of SMEs towards sustainability are still very scanty and inadequate. Therefore, this chapter proposes to develop a framework of SC Innovation for the sustainability of SMEs through a systematic literature review. This framework will be very useful to the owners and employees of SMEs and various researchers.

The prospect of use of digital technologies in supply chain management companies of the fashion industry has been considered. It has been revealed, that digital technologies are actively applied at various stages of logistic process in the companies of this industry. Classification of such digital technologies has been carried out and the most perspective directions for use in the companies of fashion industry have been highlighted, among which it is possible to call: 3D printing technology, technology of virtual fitting room, clever mirrors technology and others. It has been substantiated, that use and implementation of the information-communicative technologies, is one of the most perspective directions of development of digitalization in supply chain management and logistics.

Abstract The agri-food sector contributes significantly to economic and social advancements globally despite numerous challenges such as food safety and security, demand and supply gaps, product quality, traceability, etc. Digital technologies offer effective and sustainable ways to these challenges through reduced human interference and improved data-accuracy. Innovations led by digital transformations in the agri-food supply chains (AFSCs) are the main aim of ‘Agri-Food 4.0’. This brings significant transformations in the agri-food sector by reducing food wastage, real-time product monitoring, reducing scalability issues, etc. This paper presents a systematic review of the innovations in the agri-food for digital technologies such as internet-of-things, artificial intelligence, big data, RFID, robotics, block-chain technology, etc. The employment of these technologies from the ‘farm to fork’ along AFSC emphasizes a review of 159 articles solicited from different sources. This paper also highlights digitization in developing smart, sensible, and sustainable agri-food supply chain systems.

In today's world where the importance of digitalization is increasing day by day, companies to increase their competitiveness have focused on digital supply chain instead of traditional supply chain. In a world where resources are constantly decreasing, the concept of sustainability has become very crucial in every part of life. Digital technologies, on the other hand, have a direct relationship with sustainability. Sustainability has three main dimensions: economic, environmental, and social. Therefore, the aim of this study is to evaluate digital supply chain on 3 basic dimensions of sustainability. For this purpose, Fuzzy Best Worst Method (F-BWM) was used to define the importance level of criteria. Findings reveal that the concept of sustainability in textile firms in Turkey is generally perceived within an economic and environmental area, rather than within a social dimension. This study is very important in putting forward digital technologies which utilizing in supply chain and the impact of the digital supply chain on sustainability.

PurposeThe purpose of this paper is to present a comprehensive picture of the innovative efforts undertaken over time to develop the digital technologies for managing the interface between supply chain management and marketing processes and the role they play in sustaining supply chain management-marketing (SCM-M) integration from an information processing point of view.Design/methodology/approachPatent analysis and actual examples are used to carry out this study. In detail, first, the authors identify the subset of enabling technologies pertaining to the fourth industrial revolution (Industry 4.0) that can be considered the most relevant for effective SCM-M integration (i.e. Industrial Internet of Things, Cloud computing, Big Data analytics and customer profiling, Cyber security). Second, the authors carry out a patent analysis aimed at providing a comprehensive overview of the patenting activity trends characterizing the set of digital technologies under investigation, hence highlighting their innovation dynamics and applications.FindingsThis research provides insightful information about which digital technologies may enable the SCM-M integration. Specifically, the authors highlight the role those solutions play in terms of information acquisition, storage and elaboration for SCM-M integration by relying on illustrative actual examples. Moreover, the authors present the organisations more involved in the development of digital technologies for SCM-M integration over time and offer an examination of their technological impact in terms of influence on subsequent technological developments.Originality/valueSo far, much has been said about why marketing and supply chain management functions should be integrated. However, a clear picture of the digital technologies that might be adopted to achieve this objective has yet to be revealed. Thus, the paper contributes to the literature on SCM-M integration and Industry 4.0 by highlighting the enabling technologies for the Industry 4.0 that may particularly serve for managing the SCM-M interface from an information processing perspective.
