BACKGROUND The COVID-19 pandemic has uncovered the potential of digital misinformation in shaping the health of nations. The deluge of unverified information that spreads faster than the epidemic itself is an unprecedented phenomenon that has put millions of lives in danger. Mitigating this ‘Infodemic’ requires strong health messaging systems that are engaging, vernacular, scalable, effective and continuously learn the new patterns of misinformation. OBJECTIVE We created WashKaro, a multi-pronged intervention for mitigating misinformation through conversational AI, machine translation and natural language processing. WashKaro provides the right information matched against WHO guidelines through AI, and delivers it in the right format in local languages. METHODS We theorize (i) an NLP based AI engine that could continuously incorporate user feedback to improve relevance of information, (ii) bite sized audio in the local language to improve penetrance in a country with skewed gender literacy ratios, and (iii) conversational but interactive AI engagement with users towards an increased health awareness in the community. RESULTS A total of 5026 people who downloaded the app during the study window, among those 1545 were active users. Our study shows that 3.4 times more females engaged with the App in Hindi as compared to males, the relevance of AI-filtered news content doubled within 45 days of continuous machine learning, and the prudence of integrated AI chatbot “Satya” increased thus proving the usefulness of an mHealth platform to mitigate health misinformation. CONCLUSIONS We conclude that a multi-pronged machine learning application delivering vernacular bite-sized audios and conversational AI is an effective approach to mitigate health misinformation. Machine translation tools such as Google Translate are at best seen as useful approximators, rather than offering any literary potential. In this experiment and short methodological reflection, I use Google Translate to recursively translate Austrian poet Georg Trakl’s celebrated WWI poem, ‘Grodek’, between German and English, until the two versions stabilise. I am attentive to places in which the poem and its renderings are simplified and/or literary value may be lost, but also places in which new or unexpected renderings emerge. This is a preliminary foray, but I propose that the method of recursive machine translation offers a new way to explore the translation of literary texts—a timely proposal, given the increasing applications of computer programmes and machine learning both within the humanities and throughout wider literary culture.

AbstractA deeper analysis on Comparative Quality Estimation is presented by extending the state-of-the-art methods with adequacy and grammatical features from other Quality Estimation tasks. The previously used linear method, unable to cope with the augmented features, is replaced with a boosting classifier assisted by feature selection. The methods indicated show improved performance for 6 language pairs, when applied on the output from MT systems developed over 7 years. The improved models compete better with reference-aware metrics.Notable conclusions are reached through the examination of the contribution of the features in the models, whereas it is possible to identify common MT errors that are captured by the features. Many grammatical/fluency features have a good contribution, few adequacy features have some contribution, whereas source complexity features are of no use. The importance of many fluency and adequacy features is language-specific.

Automatically assessing the quality of machine translation is an important yet challenging task for machine translation research. Translation quality assessment is understood as predicting translation quality without reference to the source text. Translation quality depends on the specific machine translation system and often requires post-editing. Manual editing is a long and expensive process. Since the need to quickly determine the quality of translation increases, its automation is required. In this paper, we propose a quality assessment method based on ensemble supervised machine learning methods. The bilingual corpus WMT 2019 for the EnglishRussian language pair was used as data. The text data volume is 17089 sentences, 85% of the data was used for training, and 15% for testing the model. Linguistic functions extracted from the text in the source and target languages were used as features for training the system, since it is these characteristics that can most accurately characterize the translation in terms of quality. The following tools were used for feature extraction: a free language modeling tool based on SRILM and a Stanford POS Tagger parts of speech tagger. Before training the system, the text was preprocessed. The model was trained using three regression methods: Bagging, Extra Tree, and Random Forest. The algorithms were implemented in the Python programming language using the Scikit learn library. The parameters of the random forest method have been optimized using a grid search. The performance of the model was assessed by the mean absolute error MAE and the root mean square error RMSE, as well as by the Pearsоn coefficient, which determines the correlation with human judgment. Testing was carried out using three machine translation systems: Google and Bing neural systems, Mouses statistical machine translation systems based on phrases and based on syntax. Based on the results of the work, the method of additional trees showed itself best. In addition, for all categories of indicators under consideration, the best results are achieved using the Google machine translation system. The developed method showed good results close to human judgment. The system can be used for further research in the task of assessing the quality of translation.

Machine Translation (MT) from Bangla to English has recently become a priority task for the Bangla Natural Language Processing (NLP) community. Statistical Machine Translation (SMT) systems require a significant amount of bilingual data between language pairs to achieve significant translation accuracy. However, being a low-density language, such resources are not available in Bangla. In this chapter, the authors discuss how machine learning approaches can help to improve translation quality within as SMT system without requiring a huge increase in resources. They provide a novel semi-supervised learning and active learning framework for SMT, which utilizes both labeled and unlabeled data. The authors discuss sentence selection strategies in detail and perform detailed experimental evaluations on the sentence selection methods. In semi-supervised settings, reversed model approach outperformed all other approaches for Bangla-English SMT, and in active learning setting, geometric 4-gram and geometric phrase sentence selection strategies proved most useful based on BLEU score results over baseline approaches. Overall, in this chapter, the authors demonstrate that for low-density language like Bangla, these machine-learning approaches can improve translation quality.

Neural machine translation technologies are having increasing applications in clinical and healthcare settings. In multicultural countries, automatic translation tools provide critical support to medical and health professionals in their interaction and exchange of health messages with migrant patients with limited or non-English proficiency. While research has mainly explored the usability and limitations of state-of-the-art machine translation tools in the detection and diagnosis of physical diseases and conditions, there is a persistent lack of evidence-based studies on the applicability of machine translation tools in the delivery of mental healthcare services for vulnerable populations. Our study developed Bayesian machine learning algorithms using relevance vector machine to support frontline health workers and medical professionals to make better informed decisions between risks and convenience of using online translation tools when delivering mental healthcare services to Spanish-speaking minority populations living in English-speaking countries. Major strengths of the machine learning classifier that we developed include scalability, interpretability, and adaptability of the classifier for diverse mental healthcare settings. In this paper, we report on the process of the Bayesian machine learning classifier development through automatic feature optimisation and the interpretation of the classifier-enabled assessment of the suitability of original English mental health information for automatic online translation. We elaborate on the interpretation of the assessment results in clinical settings using statistical tools such as positive likelihood ratios and negative likelihood ratios.

At present, there are still many deficiencies in Chinese-Japanese machine translation methods, the processing of corpus information is not deep enough, and the translation process lacks rich language knowledge support. In particular, the recognition accuracy of Japanese characters is not high. Based on machine learning technology, this study combines image feature retrieval technology to construct a Japanese character recognition model and uses Japanese character features as the algorithm recognition object. Moreover, this study expands image features by generating a brightness enhancement function using a bilateral grid. In order to exclude the influence of the edge and contour of the image scene on the analysis of the image source, the brightness value of the HDR image is used instead of the pixel value of the image as the image data. In addition, this research designs experiments to study the translation effects of this research model. The research results show that the model proposed in this paper has certain effects and can provide theoretical references for subsequent related research.
