This dissertation focuses on SOA Governance in healthcare organisations. SOA has emerged to support organisations overcoming their integration problems and it has been adopted by many organisations in various sectors, including healthcare. Despite SOA benefits, many organisations claim they face problems and will not expand SOA use. This reveals that even thought SOA is considered a valuable architectural paradigm it still has factors that affect its applicability. This is extremely important as investments of hundreds of thousands of Euros do not lead to the expected outcomes and in some cases result in failure. A failure in a healthcare organisation’s IT infrastructure is not an option as the literature is full of cases where healthcare IT failures cost patients’ lives. So the researcher investigated the SOA Critical Success Factors (CSF) in healthcare and identified that SOA Governance is depicted as a critical dimension to SOA that is required from an early stage. The top priority given to SOA Governance is in accordance with the views of many researchers who report that SOA implementations require governance mechanisms to excel, otherwise the architecture will end up complex, uncontrolled, brittle and eventually discarded. To this end, the researcher focused the research on the role of SOA Governance in healthcare organization and explained the main concepts of SOA Governance providing a detailed description of the theoretical approaches surrounding this research area. The identified SOA Governance models shared common issues, but also hold differences (scale, detail and analysis) and limitations (confusion, overlapping, lack of testing and healthcare aspects). Thus, to extend the established norms and to overcome the limitations identified in literature, the researcher proposed a SOA Governance framework integrated with nine elements, such as (a) Organisational Structures, (b) Roles, (c) Maturity Model, (d) Roadmap, (e) SOA Governance Infrastructure, (f) Policies, (g) Metrics, (h) Best Practices, and (i) Governance Processes. This conceptualisation pinpointed attributes and guidelines for each element, required successfully governing a SOA and tackling longstanding Healthcare Information Systems (HIS) challenges. The researcher claims that such an approach is significant and novel as: (a) it incorporates a unique formulation combining the identified common elements of SOA Governance, the SOA CSFs and HIS challenges and (b) the framework could be used as a decision making tool for SOA Governance. The author discusses the application of this approach by using a qualitative, interpretive, multiple case study research strategy. Empirical data collected from two case organisations show that such an approach contributes towards more robust decisions for SOA Governance and indicates that it is acceptable by the organisations and the interviewees that participated in this research. Despite these results, the approach cannot be generalised, but it is the researcher intention to allow others to relate their views with the ones reported in this dissertation. This dissertation introduces, tests and presents a novel SOA Governance Framework in healthcare and contributes to the body of knowledge by extending the literature.

This paper has the main purpose to make a critical and balanced analysis about the potential of blockchain technology to face some of the great current socioeconomic challenges, being focus on impact assessment point of view, analyzing the disruptive potential of blockchain to provide solutions at level of different challenges as example, climate change, migrant movements, gender equality, financial inclusion or the cost opportunity of the management of data science. The term blockchain summary a numerous different type of system of distributed ledger, essentially, it is just a record distributed, a ledger of digital events that is distributed or shared among many different parts within an ecosystem (nodes), and chronological in a network. The technology is at an early stage and can be implemented in many ways depending on the objective. The methodological tool for the research is strategic and qualitative SWOT analysis identifying the critical success factors such internal factors (Strengthens and Weakness), and external factors (Opportunities and Threats), summarizes the arguments and counterarguments within the scientific discussion. From the bibliographic review carried out on the finding and disclosure provided by empirical research about business case studies, the research results summarized in the paper confirm that although looks difficulty of give a closed definition to variety of system under the umbrella of blockchain, among the main strengths of technology are its intrinsic characteristics, such as, its ability to store data immutably without relying on a central authority. As weakness, highlight the fact of the need of solve some non-minor inefficiencies as energy consumption and, as result, the difficulty to be scaled. It has the potential to replace the intermediary and central entities or change the way they works, allowing disintermediation and potentially empower people in trade, democratic participation, social interaction and financial inclusion, which represent great opportunities. Although, on the side of threats there is lack of knowledge about the technology, which generates resistance from regulators who are beginning to assess risks and are concerned about how new participants could cannibalize their income models. In addition, it seems clear the importance of assume the fact that the technological changes take time to develop and often require the adaptation of entire ecosystems. The relatively new phenomenon called sharing economy, or collaborative consumption, is best known by the companies like Airbnb and Uber. These companies use mobile applications and web platforms to match people willing to share a room or a car with others who need a ride or a place to stay. The peer-to-peer economy has disrupted traditional business models and upset the regulatory status quo (Shueh, 2014). Sharing economy has challenged mature industries, such as hotels, restaurants, cars, by providing consumers with convenient and effective access to resources without the financial, emotional or social burdens of ownership. In that sense, sharing economy is also an access economy (Eckhardt & Bardhi, 2015). There is a whole bunch of new startups springing up and joining the sharing economy movement. Companies are inventing new ways of integrating customers in their value creation processes in order to enhance the success of new service concepts. In this study, sharing economy is defined as a set of practices and business models based on horizontal networks and the participation of a community (Ouishare; Ismail, 2014). The aim of this study is to increase understanding of how the new networked startups operate and how they create value for their customers. We especially look at the role of platforms, the innovations in organizing the business and the role of the networks and communities. The data is collected from a Finnish sharing economy startup operating in the restaurant industry (lunch leftovers). The early stage startups’ business model is compared to the leading startups in the sharing economy. The data is collected by interviewing the entrepreneurs, drawing the customer journeys and visualizing the elements of their business models. A case study is used as a method because the study aims to explain what kind of business models sharing economy startups use and what is the role of the different elements in their success in partnerships, resources, customer relationships, and communities. A Case study is relevant when the study requires an extensive and in-depth description of the phenomenon (Yin, 2014). As a result, this study will provide insight into how the new sharing economy startups organize their businesses to create unique value for the customers. This article will contribute to the increasing interest of enhancing customer experience and raise some key elements for the success factors of the sharing economy. Also, the study will highlight the possibilities of digital platforms enhancing the growth and internationalization of startups.

Generating innovations is one of the key success factors of companies and organizations. To constantly create new innovations, an effective innovation strategy must be implemented by companies. Therefore, a variation of different strategic frameworks has been formulated. One framework which combines the idea of Open Innovation with startup-based interaction is the startup-orientated cooperative innovation (SOCI) strategy. The PANDA initiative of Fresenius University of Applied Science can be characterized as a coupled process of the SOCI framework. This paper presents the results of a survey, analyzing the impact of PANDA on the innovation strategies of the chemical and pharmaceutical industry based on the innovation attributes defined by the Oslo Manual 2018. The survey was used to compare 12 PANDA project evaluations implementing by European chemical and pharmaceutical companies. The main results of this study show that PANDA represents an effective tool to foster early-stage innovation development and indicates general effectiveness of SOCI strategies for chemical and pharmaceutical companies.

Purpose The purpose of this paper is to examine the multidimensionality of total productive maintenance (TPM) and its relationship with manufacturing performance improvement in the Malaysian manufacturing sector. Specifically, this study evaluates the contribution of each TPM success factors in improving manufacturing performance. Design/methodology/approach Data from 89 employees who participated in the survey were used to test the proposed research framework. A structured questionnaire adopted from Ahuja and Khamba (2006) was used to assess the Malaysian context. Findings The analytical results reveal that traditional maintenance initiatives and TPM implementation initiatives significantly affect manufacturing performance, but not top management leadership and maintenance organisation. Top management roles and commitment are critical in the early stage to determine the master plan and initiate the implementation of the whole programme. However, traditional maintenance and TPM implementation initiatives gradually enable engagement, proper planning, right execution and continuous improvement, ultimately improving the manufacturing performance indicators significantly. The findings further unveil that TPM is not sustainable in Malaysia’s manufacturing organisations in the long run. Practical implications This analysis is vital for senior managers of manufacturing organisations that have implemented TPM or are considering introducing TPM in their organisations. Originality/value This study contributes to the literature by examining beyond the introduction and stabilisation phase of TPM to provide an insight of whether TPM is sustainable in the long run.
