Abstract This article is an attempt to address the issue of the scopes and research methodology in the thematic commentary of the Holy Qur’Én. It could be considered as an introductory work for students and researchers who are interested in this field of research which will help them develop a good understanding of the meanings and teachings of the Qur’Én and its application to the real life. It may also help them undertake case studies and research in the field of thematic commentary of the Qur’Én. It has been explained in the article that the scope of the thematic commentary of the Qur’Én includes four areas; i.e. the concept, the topic, the central themes and the thematic unity of the SËrah/Chapter. The article gives a special emphasis on the study of the Qur’Énic central themes as it was overlooked by some researchers. It also provides a systematic investigation on the thematic unity of the SËrah/Chapter and considers it a significant area of research in the thematic commentary of the Qur’Én. The article also addresses the issue of the research methodology in the field of the thematic commentary of the Qur’Én. In this regard, the author highlights the principles, conditions and framework for undertaking research projects in this field of study and explains the major steps that should be followed in the execution of the research. These steps include freedom of choosing the research topic, freedom of benefitting from different types of tafsÊr (interpretation of the Qur’Én) works and schools and benefitting from the human heritage in different fields of knowledge, provided that the Qur’Én should have controlling power on other books and human theories.   Key Words: The Qur’Én, TafsÊr, Thematic, Scopes, Methodology. This chapter stresses the importance of integrating empirical evidence in the construction process of reference models. With reference to the authors’ underly-ing epistemological beliefs, requirements for an empirically grounded process model are derived. Based on a literature review of existing process models and experience gained from three research projects, an advanced process model is proposed in order to provide concrete instructions that show how these require-ments can be met. Real-life examples from completed and ongoing research pro-jects are continuously integrated so as to contribute to the practicability of the proposed model for the reader.

Life sciences research is increasingly international and data-intensive. Researchers work in multi-jurisdictional teams or formally established research consortia to exchange data and conduct research using computation of multiple sources and volumes of data at multiple sites and through multiple pathways. Despite the internationalization and data intensification of research, the same ethics review process as applies to single-site studies in one country tends to apply to multi-site studies in multiple countries. Because of the standard requirement for multi-jurisdictional or multi-site ethics review, international research projects are subjected to multiple ethics reviews of the same research protocol. Consequently, the reviews may be redundant and resource-consuming, whilst the opinions delivered by ethics committees may be inconsistent both within and across jurisdictions. In this article, we present findings based on interviews conducted with international experts in research ethics on the topic of ethics review mutual recognition. We explore the issues associated with ethics committee review of multi-jurisdictional data-intensive research projects, identifying current problems, real-life experiences, and potential solutions that are both bottom-up (via researchers, participants and publics) and top-down (via statutory regulation), as well as challenges in achieving both. On the whole, participants recommended multiple changes to the current ethics review regime for data-intensive international research with the aim of reducing inefficiency and inconsistency. But, the changes recommended differ in terms of degree and scope. In general, participants stressed that key drivers of success in a reformed system should be strong leadership (on the ground and in government) and demonstration of value.

The article presents the history of the development of competence assessment from the XX century till now. On the basis of the completed study the author developed the periodisation of national and international research projects in order to systematize various projects and highlight the stages of their development. The main focus of most projects is the assessment of competences and skills, literacy, respondents’ socio-demographic characteristics. All these components allow to analyse the received data as full as possible. The recent showed studies focus on the ability of using the existing skills and competences in real-life situations. The abovementioned periodisation gives an opportunity to researchers to obtain structured information of the projects and use it in their own research.

The ethical dimension research is the one of the major topics that should be addressed before beginning any empirical work. In practice, what this means is that any research project, which is likely to involve distributing questionnaires, conducting interviews or conducting focus groups, brings with it various dilemmas in terms of moral conduct towards the people you are expecting to fill in questionnaires, be interviewed or take part in focus groups. Such dilemmas will be dependent on the design of your particular study. However, typical ethical dilemmas in relation to business management research include: the manner in which you intend to recruit people to your study, the extent to you will inform participants of what you research is about, dealing with research participants who may be concerned about how they are portrayed in your final dissertation. There are some simple steps which can help ensure that your research embodies the kinds of ethical principles that many institutions require, and we will use a range of real life ethical dilemmas to help you as you formulate your own research. The chapter concludes with checklist questions to consider.

Many research projects have studied various aspects of smart environments including smart rooms, home, and offices. Few projects, however, have studied smart urban public spaces such as smart railway stations and airports due to the lack of an experimental environment. We propose virtual cities as a testbed for examining the design of smart urban public spaces. We developed an intelligent emergency guidance system for subway stations and used the virtual subway station platform to analyze the effects of the system. This experience allows us to argue that simulations in virtual cities are useful to pre-test the design of smart urban public spaces and estimate the possible outcome of real-life scenarios.

The use of vignettes that are based upon fictionalised accounts is well-established in contemporary social science. Vignettes have been used in a variety of ways to contribute to studies with both a quantitative and a qualitative orientation. This paper reflects on two recent qualitative studies which have made innovative use of ‘real-life’ vignettes. In each case, the paper describes some of the unanticipated and overlapping benefits that accrued from their incorporation into the research design and reflects on the advantages that ‘real-life’ vignettes might bring to future research. Drawing on two different research projects, the paper highlights the further potential contribution of ‘real-life’ vignettes to the repertoire of research methods currently available to social scientists.

The old saying goes, “Time and tide wait for no man.” In today's society, an equally apt line might be, “Everyone waits for almost everything.” This widespread experience with waiting lends a marvelous opportunity to develop some very nice mathematics and apply it to problems with which our students can easily identify. In this art icle, we shall consider several mathematical models that can be used to study different waiting situations. The mathematics used involves just simple ideas from probability and mathematical expectation. Some related ideas are given in Mathers (1976). We shall also consider how computer simulations can be introduced to bring an added dimension to these topics. Most important, we shall see how such mathematical ideas furnish an ideal vehicle for involving students in actual individual research projects to collect real-life data, analyze it, and compare the results to predictions based on the mathematical model.

This book is a guide to ways of conducting and writing qualitative research projects through complex teams and lone research undertakings. The text is grounded in Davidson’s experience as a qualitative researcher and writer, as well as her experience working with complex research teams. With an emphasis on the value of writing in qualitative research, Davidson describes issues of research design, methodological writing, documenting research findings, and implications regarding complex research teams. The book is written in a motivating orientation using a mixture of both a formal and conversational tone. Davidson triangulates this narrative text and builds reliability through personal experiences as a qualitative researcher on complex, small, and lone projects; working with her own students’ qualitative projects; real life field stories as examples; detailed append ices to support her content; and references from her own publications. This book is appropriate for anyone engaged with qualitative inquiry with a beginner researcher considered as well.
