Background: Different levels of nutrient management practice and soil amendments charred rice husk with Arbuscular mycorrhizae during the critical stages of the crop growth enhances the productivity of the groundnut crop. Methods: The field experiments were conducted summer, kharif and rabi seasons of 2016-17 and 2017-2018 at AC and RI, TNAU, Madurai. The main plots consisted of three levels of irrigation scheduling viz., I1- 0.8 IW/CPE, I2- 0.6 IW/CPE and I3- 0.6 IW/CPE ratio and sub plot comprised of four level of nutrient management practices viz., N1-75% of recommended dose of fertilizer with 5t of charred rice husk, N2- 50% of recommended dose of fertilizer with 5t of charred rice husk, N3-75% of recommended dose of fertilizer with 5t of charred rice husk along with seed treatment of Arbuscular mycorrhiza and N4- 50% of recommended dose of fertilizer with 5t of charred rice husk along with seed treatment Arbuscular mycorrhiza. Result: The study revealed that the highest plant height, dry matter production, leaf area index, leaf single photon avalanche diode value, pod yield and haulm yield, nutrient uptake (N,P,K) of groundnut crop and soil enzyme activities in soil was registered with the application of 75% recommended dose of fertilizer and 5t of charred rice husk as basal with seed treatment of Arbuscular mycorrhiza. The highest pod and haulm yield of 1783, 1935 and 1854 kg ha-1 and 4743, 4272 and 4338 kg ha-1 during summer, kharif and rabi’ 2017 seasons respectively of groundnut was registered with 75% of recommended dose of fertilizer and 5t of charred rice husk as basal with seed treatment of Arbuscular mycorrhiza.

Despite numerous reports on the positive effects of vesicular arbuscular mycorrhizae (VAM) on plant growth in temperate soils, surprisingly little data exist on the importance of VAM for crop growth on acid sandy soils of West Africa. A pot experiment conducted with local genotypes of pearl millet (Pennisetum glaucum L.), sorghum (Sorghum bicolor L. Moench) and cowpea (Vigna unguiculata) with and without phosphorus (P) application in a sterilized sandy soil from a farmer's field in Niger showed large growth-enhancing effects of VAM. Phosphorus application led to 18- and 24-fold increases in pearl millet root and shoot dry matter independently of VAM, whereas the shoot and root dry matter of sorghum and cowpea depended largely on the interaction between P application and VAM. With P, VAM increased total uptake of P, K, Ca, Mg and Zn by 2·5- to 6-fold in sorghum and cowpea. On severely P deficient West African soils P application can lead to large increases in early root growth, a prerequisite for early mycorrhizal infection and a subsequent significant contribution of VAM to enhanced plant growth and nutrient uptake.

The present study was conducted to evaluate the growth response of Capsicum (Capsicum annuum L.) to varying levels of Phosphorus (P), Zinc (Zn) and Arbuscular Mycorrhizae (AM). A pot experiment with twenty-four treatment combinations was setup in the net house. The treatment combination consisted of 4 levels of P: P0- 0, P50 - 237.5 kg ha-1 SSP, P75 - 355.5 kg ha-1 SSP and P100- 475 kg ha-1 SSP, 3 levels of Zn: Zn50- 5 Kg ha-1 ZnSO4, Zn75-7.5 Kg ha-1 ZnSO4, Zn100- 10 Kg ha-1 ZnSO4 and 2 levels of AM: I0- 0 and I15- 15 g per pot. The main objective of the study was to reduce the antagonistic interaction between P and Zn by using AM fungi. The results of combined effects of application of P, Zn and AM revealed that P, Zn addition along with AM fungi improved plant growth parameters, plant nutrient content and total nutrient uptake (both above ground and underground portion) of the plant. The results indicated increase in plant height, root length and total nutrient uptake by increasing the level of P, Zn and Arbuscular Mycorrhizae. Also, Arbuscular Mycorrhizae enhanced plant growth by reducing Phosphorus or Zinc deficiency. Antagonistic effects of P and Zn addition on plant nutrient content and total nutrient uptake were absent due to application of AM fungi. Our results indicated that by using appropriate levels of AM fungi along with P and Zn, antagonistic interactions can be reduced for maximizing the plant nutrient content and nutrient uptake which may lead to improvement in plant growth and nutrition.

This study seek to evaluate the potential of four BEs (Azotobacter, Azospirillum, Rhizobium and Arbuscular mycorrhizae fungi (AMF)) without complementary inorganic fertilizer in promoting plant growth and nutrient uptake in contrasting soil types. Field studies set up in completely randomized design (CRD) were conducted in Southwestern Nigeria using bambara groundnut Vigna subterranea (L.) Verdc. (Fabales: Fabaceae) as test crop sown on a sandy loam and clay loam alfisol. Result indicates that performance of inoculated BEs in improving bambara nut growth and nutrient uptake did not differ according to soil types. Promising results were obtained with all BEs with Rhizobium, AMF and Azospirillum showing exceptional performance respectively across all measured parameters. These BEs are recommended for adoption by local farmers in the study area to optimize bambara nut performance with the aim of reducing dependence on inorganic fertilizers and improving fertilizer use efficiency.
