Parallel processing methods in Geographic Information Systems (GIS) are traditionally used to accelerate the calculation of large data volumes with sophisticated spatial algorithms. Such kinds of acceleration can also be applied to provide real-time GIS applications to improve the responsiveness of user interactions with the data. This paper presents a method to enable this approach for Web GIS applications. It uses the JavaScript 3D graphics API (WebGL) to perform client-side parallel real-time computations of 2D or 2.5D spatial raster algorithms on the graphics card. The potential of this approach is evaluated using an example implementation of a hillshade algorithm. Performance comparisons of parallel and sequential computations reveal acceleration factors between 25 and 100, mainly depending on mobile or desktop environments.

With the growth of technology in earth and space science informatics has led to the revolution in a wide range of geospatial practice. Nowadays collaborative mapping has become a new hot spot, following mobile and web GIS. This paper explores the potential use of GeoPackage for collaborative mapping of geospatial data in limited network environments. GeoPackage is a data format that open-standard, platform-independent, portable, and self-describing. This paper focus on the implementation of GeoPackage in mobile application for field data collection. A mobile application was developed that implements the GeoPackage data format as an internal database to provide support for offline mapping. The developed mobile application demonstrates that vector and raster data can be stored in a single data format, which reduces the device storage consumption. The details of how GeoPackage data contribute to mobile GIS to achieve collaborative mapping in limited network environments are discussed. The findings show that the GeoPackage data format has great potential to improve existing mobile GIS applications.

Geographic information systems (GIS) refers to the computer hardware and software that supports the management and analysis of spatial information. There has been a recent increase in the development of Internet accessible GIS applications, called Web- GIS (Al-Kodmany, 2001; Carver, Evans, Kingston, & Turton, 2000). Web-GIS facilitates participation among stakeholders through disseminating user interfaces for storing, accessing, and analyzing spatial information using the Internet (Al-Kodmany, 2001; Carver et al., 2000; Dragicevic & Balram, 2004). Participatory and community GIS approaches focus on system design that supports collaboration among organizations serving and representing interests of many constituent groups, including nontechnical users (Carver, 2003; Craig, Harris, & Weiner, 2002; Drew, 2003; Elwood & Ghose, 2004; Elwood & Leitner, 2003; Ghose, 2005; Ghose& Elwood, 2003; Kyem, 2004; Seiber, 2003).

The goal of this work is to study the use of WEB GIS open source solution for workflow organizing of urban planning documentation: zoning permit, building permit, occupancy permit, utilities connection. A web GIS solution Giscuit.Com developed by a moldavian company VEC.MD was used as a framework for implementation of test version of a specialized website Primaria.Giscuit.Com. Giscuit is a cost-effective web mapping platform built on powerful, cutting-edge, open source geospatial components. The goal is to make it as easy as possible to build more secure, reliable and modern web GIS applications. With Giscuit users stay in control of their content through centralized management of vector and raster spatial data. Giscuit allows users to visualize, share, edit and analyze geospatial data. It has powerful web-based administrator panel with features like data import, layer styling, user management, permissions management, publishing data and more. It is compliant with the Open Geospatial Consortium standards, this is achieved through OpenLayers or PHP MapScript supporting several OGC standards like WMS, WFS, WMC etc. Giscuit provides a scalable GIS server platform that can be deployed on a single Linux or Microsoft Windows machine, it can be distributed across multiple servers or deployed on cloud infrastructure.

Geographic Information System (GIS) is a tool used for capture, storage, manipulation, query and presentation of spatial data that have applicability in diverse fields. Web GIS has put GIS on Web, that made it available to common public which was earlier used by few elite users. In the present paper, development of Web GIS frameworks has been explained that provide the requisite knowledge for creating Web based GIS applications. Open Source Software (OSS) have been used to develop two Web GIS frameworks. In first Web GIS framework, WAMP server, ALOV, Quantum GIS and MySQL have been used while in second Web GIS framework, Apache Tomcat server, GeoServer, Quantum GIS, PostgreSQL and PostGIS have been used. These two Web GIS frameworks have been critically compared to bring out the suitability of each for a particular application as well as their performance. This will assist users in selecting the most suitable one for a particular Web GIS application.

“Giving a bird-fly look at the Rome countryside, throughout the Middle Age central period, it would show as if the multiple city towers has been widely spread around the territory” on a radial range of maximum thirty kilometers far from the Capitol Hill center (Carocci and Vendittelli, 2004).<br><br> This is the consequence of the phenomenon identified with the “Incasalamento” neologism, described in depth in the following paper, intended as the general process of expansion of the urban society interests outside the downtown limits, started from the half of the XII and developed through all the XIII century, slowing down and ending in the following years. From the XIX century till today the architectural finds of this reality have raised the interest of many national and international scientists, which aimed to study and catalog them all to create a complete framework that, cause of its extension, didn’t allow yet attempting any element by element detailed analysis. From the described situation has started our plan of intervention, we will apply integrated survey methods and technologies of terrestrial and UAV near stereo-photogrammetry, by the use of low cost drones, more than action cameras and reflex on extensible rods, integrated and referenced with GPS and topographic survey. In the final project we intend to produce some 3D scaled and textured surface models of any artifact (almost two hundreds were firstly observed still standing), to singularly study the dimensions and structure, to analyze the building materials and details and to formulate an hypothesis about any function, based even on the position along the territory. These models, successively georeferenced, will be imported into a 2D and 3D WebGIS and organized in layers made visible on basemaps of reference, as much as on historical maps.

This chapter describes a prototype Web geographic information system (GIS) and spatial model application for mapping person crime rates in Brisbane, Australia. Our application, which integrates GIS functionality, a clustering model, client/server technology and the Internet, can generate useful documents such as maps and tables to examine and present crime patterns in space and time. Our chapter also demonstrates the usefulness and appeal of the Web GIS application as an information dissemination and spatial data analysis tool for promoting public awareness of social conditions. This chapter argues that Web-based data access is a better approach to delivering large volumes of crime data and geographical information to the public. We expect that police, community workers and citizens could utilize the application and associated maps to facilitate and enhance crime prevention activities. We note, however, that further development of Web-based GIS applications need to answer a number of pertinent questions regarding system maintenance, data integrity and neighborhood crime prevention.

This article presents the MADGIS (Mobile Agent-based Distributed Geographic Information System) project, which aims at integrating distributed Web GIS applications by using mobile agent technologies to overcome the limitations of traditional distributed computing paradigms in a (mobile) Internet context.
