Fiber additive will induce the rheological behavior of suspension, resulting in variation in velocity profile and fiber orientation especially for the non-dilute case. Based on the fluid-solid coupling dynamics simulation, it shows that the fiber orientation aligns along the streamline more and more quickly in the central turbulent region as the fiber concentration increases, especially contract ratio Cx > 4. However, fibers tend to maintain the original uniform orientation and are rarely affected by the contract ratio in the boundary layer. The fibers orientation in the near semi-dilute phase is lower than that in the dilute phase near the outlet, which may be the result of the hydrodynamic contact lubrication between fibers. The orientation distribution and concentration of the fibers change the viscous flow mechanism of the suspension microscopically, which makes a velocity profile vary with the phase concentration. The velocity profile of the approaching semi-dilute phase sublayer is higher than that of the dilute and semi-dilute phases on the central streamline and in the viscous bottom layer, showing weak drag reduction while the situation is opposite on the logarithmic layer of the boundary layer. The relevant research can provide a process strategy for fiber orientation optimization and rheological control in the industrial applications of suspension.

Continuous generating gear grinding with vitrified grinding worms is an established process for the hard finishing of gears for high-performance transmissions. Due to the increasing requirements for gears in terms of power density, the required surface roughness is continuously decreasing. In order to meet the required tooth flank roughness, common manufacturing processes are polish grinding with elastic bonded grinding tools and fine grinding with vitrified grinding tools. The process behavior and potential of the different bonds for producing super fine surfaces in generating gear grinding have not been sufficiently scientifically investigated yet. Therefore, the objective of this report is to evaluate these potentials. Part of the investigations are the generating gear grinding process with elastic bonded, as well as vitrified grinding worms with comparable grit sizes. The potential of the different tool specifications is empirically investigated independent of the grain size, focusing on the influence of the bond. One result of the investigations was that the tooth flank roughness could be reduced to nearly the same values with the polish and the fine grinding tool. Furthermore, a dependence of the roughness on the selected grinding parameters could not be determined. However, it was found out that the profile line after polish grinding is significantly dependent on the process strategy used.

Partikelverstärkte Titanmatrix-Verbundwerkstoffe erlauben erhebliche Leistungssteigerungen im Bereich hochtemperaturbeanspruchter Struktur- und Funktionsbauteile. Die durch die Partikelverstärkung gesteigerte Verschleißbeständigkeit, Festigkeit und Härte bedeuten eine große Herausforderung an die spanende Bearbeitung derartiger Hochleistungswerkstoffe. Mittels Zerspanuntersuchungen beim Fräsen konnten unter Variation der Werkzeuggeometrie, der Schneidstoffe und der Prozessstrategie Parameterbeiche identifiziert werden, mit denen die prozesssichere Zerspanung partikelverstärkter Titanmatrix-Verbundwerkstoffe möglich ist.   Particle-reinforced titanium matrix composites ensure significant performance improvements of structural and functional high-temperature components. However, the high wear resistance, toughness and hardness due to particle reinforcement is a major challenge in machining these high performance materials. By conducting milling experiments with a variation of tool geometry, cutting material and process strategy, process parameters could be identified that enable efficient machining of particle-reinforced titanium matrix composites.

Abstract Preceding research on the re-design process focused on the development and verification of an Anchoring and Adjustment design process model. Compared to the existing, predominantly top-down, models, this new model was tailored specifically to describe designers’ approaches to re-design tasks. Building upon that work, this paper presents an evaluation of a re-design process strategy that is based on the key elements identified in the Anchoring and Adjustment model (a general pattern for re-design activities and two evaluation metrics). The overall goal was to formulate an efficient and effective process management strategy unique to re-design activities. Data were collected from three industry re-design projects for the evaluation. First, an analysis of the data confirmed that the pattern of design activities and evaluation metrics used by the company’s designers could be mapped onto those that comprise the Anchoring and Adjustment model. Second, the analysis of the data suggested that with additional formalization — based on an anchoring and adjustment approach — the company’s current process management technique could provide more accurate feedback to the designers for the more efficient and effective management of their re-design processes. One of the industry case studies is detailed to illustrate the research results and conclusions.

This descriptive-exploratory study attempted to give the readers a portrait of cyber café gamers in Manila. It determined the profile of gamers, their gaming usage, and their purposes of cyber café gaming. Descriptive statistics revealed that most of the respondents were Manila settlers, students, pursuing or had obtained college degrees, male, young, Roman Catholic, single, belonged to middle-income class, and played games in cyber cafés in the afternoon once to twice a week. One-way chi-square showed that frequency of gaming was not equally distributed in a week and gamers showed tendency to play games in a cyber in a particular time of the day. Real-time strategy games were the most frequently played games in cyber cafés. To recreate, to relieve boredom, and to have fun were the top three reasons in playing games in cyber cafés. Conclusions and directions for future research were also presented.
