General aviation (GA) operations incur the majority of fatal weather-related accidents. Previous research highlights the lack of aviation weather knowledge and skills as a possible contributing factor to the stagnant GA weather-related accident rate. This is congruent with accident data indicating weather-related accidents mostly involved non-instrument rated pilots and/or pilots with low flight hour experience flying into inadvertent meteorological conditions, such as low ceiling/visibility. However, though weather has serious and potentially fatal implications toward flight safety, weather training is an underrepresented area of pilots’ education, training, and testing. As such, autonomous (i.e. self-study) learning and training may be a viable training tool to expose pilots to various weather scenarios and to develop the knowledge, skills, and abilities (KSAs) related to aviation weather. This paper will focus on evaluating complex cognitive weather tasks and providing recommendations for developing an effective autonomous learning and training module.

In the present day, many universities have put their efforts on teaching reform. As for linguistic teaching reform, many teachers have probed into reform measures concerning character-oriented education to success and information technology. Therefore, the author has put her focus on linguistic teaching reform of independent college . Thus, zero-approach teaching mode and self-study center become her study focuses in the paper. The author tries her best to study relationships among them and tries to improve linguistic teaching reform in independent college.

Autonomous learning is one of the most important factors in the field of language learning. Leaning a language demands a considerable amount of time and learners have to work inside and outside the classroom to develop their language skills. The present study explored ways of promoting autonomous learning skills in mixed-level of students of English at a Japanese university. The course syllabus, which employed various methods was developed in order to increase students’ autonomous learning skills and incorporate a self-study period during the semester. The students set their own goals, then planned, developed and followed strategies to achieve them. Learners also kept a weekly learning-log, culminating in a presentation and a written report about what they had done to achieve their goals, including self-evaluation. The results showed that the students recognized some improvements in their English learning skills, motivation and learning habits, including an increase in learning hours. In addition, the students gained confidence in their English learning. Further practical improvements are suggested for supporting students to become autonomous language learners. Keywords: autonomous learners, language learning, learner autonomy, learner independence, self-study

In the current digital era, autonomous learning outside formal education has become a significant context for languages. In view of the huge number of websites for the study of foreign languages and their popularity due to the advantages of autonomous online learning, the authors' main goal is to evaluate the technical quality of a free online resource for the self-study of English: ESOL courses. For this purpose, this chapter presents the design of the evaluation tool: a checklist through which aspects concerning functionality and usability have been analyzed as essential characteristics of the technical dimension of a website, based on an extensive literature review and the initial technical analysis within LinguApp. The results show that non-compliance with the evaluated items leads to a deficient experience for independent users, unable to exploit all possibilities of the website due to the technical limitations they may encounter.

In Chapter 8, Elsa Chachkine explores the social turn in autonomous learning through a telecollaborative project based on teletandems and the use of social media in a self-study Russian course whose aim is to familiarize future engineers with the Russian language and culture and to develop their autonomy as learners before their work placement in Russia. This research contributes to our understanding of the ways in which the social dimension manifests itself and its potential role in the development of autonomy, language and culture, and other skills valued in the world of work.
