This chapter introduces readers to the basics of what they need to know about social psychology—that is, the study of how people’s feelings, ideas, and behaviors are influenced by the presence of others. It also looks at the increasingly important bio/neural factors such as genes, brain structure, and hormonal processes that are now being examined and understood as relevant to any study of human behavior, including group conflicts. In addition, it provides a brief introduction to the various methodologies that are increasingly able to measure social behavior, such as functional magnetic resonance imaging, electroencephalography, DNA analysis, and hormonal testing.

The book summarizes the achievements of social psychology in the last few decades in the field of social cognition. The authors ‘ attention is drawn to the analysis of situational factors that determine the errors of social perception, form social stereotypes and prejudices, as well as influence the choice of various forms of social behavior.

Ambiguous data obtained by deception say nothing about social behavior. A balanced social psychology requires separating statistical hypotheses from substantive hypotheses. Neither statistical norms nor moral rules are psychological theories. Explanatory substantive theories stipulate the structures and processes underlying behavior. The Bayesian approach is incompatible with the requirement that all to-be-tested theories be given the benefit of the doubt.

This chapter is written to help undergraduate students better understand the role of replication in psychology and how it applies to the study of social behavior. We briefly review various replication initiatives in psychology and the events that preceded our renewed focus on replication. We then discuss challenges in interpreting the low rate of replication in psychology, especially social psychology. Finally, we stress the need for better methods and theories to learn the right lessons when replications fail.

Many social psychological phenomena exhibit convergent amplification, i.e., homeostatic or error-cancelling tendencies, the results of which can be studied by currently popular research and statistical methods. We argue, however, that at least as many social psychological phenomena exhibit divergent amplification, i.e., heteromorphic or catalytic tendencies, the results of which cannot be studied by currently popular methods. The latter phenomena are usually overlooked or are dismissed as spurious or scientifically intractable. But recent advances in the physical and biological sciences demonstrate both the possibility and utility of studying these phenomena within an expanded scientific framework. We review these advances, discuss their implications for research and statistical practice in social psychology, and explain the scientific advantages of analyzing social behavior in multifarious contexts.

Objectives. Determination of dynamics of correlation of territorial self-determination of the person with coping and value-semantic mechanisms of regulation of social behavior in students. Background. In social-psychological studies of migration, the concept of territorial self-determination is practically not used, although it may be productive for systematizing existing research in the field of social psychology of migration, social psychology of personality and development, and setting new hypotheses. The article deals with the problem of territorial self-determination at different stages of personal development. Study design. We studied the difference between the correlation of migration intentions and attitudes with life orientations and coping in students of 1st and 5th years: we used the R-Spearman rank correlation coefficient, the U-Mann-Whitney criterion, and the φ*-Fisher angular transformation criterion. Participants. 59 first-year students and 87 fifth-year students of North-Eastern state University (Magadan), a total of 146 people. Measurements. Questionnaire for studying migration intentions, author’s scale of migration attitudes, test of life orientations by D.A. Leontiev, questionnaire of coping with stress COPE in adaptation by T.O. Gordeeva, etc. Results. It is established that as the University studies, the place of migration intentions and attitudes changes in the system of regulators of social behavior of the person. For first-year students, the correlation of migration intentions and attitudes with life orientations are more typical; they act as dispositions of the highest level, on the scale of the life path. Fifth-year students are more likely to associate migration intentions and attitudes with coping strategies, and they become regulators of behavior on the scale of activities. Conclusions. Migration intentions and attitudes can act as regulators of social behavior of a person at different levels, depending on the scale of the individual’s activity at this stage of its development and depending on the tasks solved by the person.

This study aims to reveal the social behavior and the factors that influence the social behavior of the main character in Pengakuan Pariyem novel by Linus Suryadi. To achieve these goals, this study used social psychology theory and interpersonal theory (FIRO—Fundamental Interpersonal Relation-Orientation) popularized by William C. Schultz. This research is a qualitative research and descriptive method with psychology of literature studies. The results showed that when viewed from the type of inclusion, Pariyem was a figure who had social behavior. Social behavior found in Pariyem arises from his social interaction with several figures.
