In the last decade, the use of simple rating and comparison surveys has proliferated on social and digital media platforms to fuel recommendations. These simple surveys and their extrapolation with machine learning algorithms such as matrix factorization shed light on user preferences over large and growing pools of items such as movies, songs, and ads. Social scientists also have a long history of measuring perceptions, preferences, and opinions, typically often over smaller, discrete item sets with exhaustive rating or ranking surveys. This article introduces simple surveys for social science application. We ran experiments to compare the predictive accuracy of both individual and aggregate comparative assessments using four types of simple surveys—pairwise comparisons (PCs) and ratings on 2, 5, and continuous point scales in three contexts—perceived safety of Google Street View images, likability of artwork, and hilarity of animal GIFs. Across contexts, we find that continuous scale ratings best predict individual assessments but consume the most time and cognitive effort. Binary choice surveys are quick and best predict aggregate assessments, useful for collective decision tasks, but poorly predict personalized preferences, for which they are currently used by Netflix to recommend movies. PCs, by contrast, successfully predict personal assessments but poorly predict aggregate assessments despite being widely used to crowdsource ideas and collective preferences. We also demonstrate how findings from these surveys can be visualized in a low-dimensional space to reveal distinct respondent interpretations of questions asked in each context. We conclude by reflecting on differences between sparse, incomplete “simple surveys” and their traditional survey counterparts in terms of efficiency, information elicited, and settings in which knowing less about more may be critical for social science.

Abstract This research aims to: 1) to know the relationship between facility management and IT-based infrastructures to increase employee work productivity after controlled loyalty; 2) know the relationship between facility management and IT-based infrastructure to employee work productivity. Quantitative research with this correlational study was conducted in the Ministry of Religion of Kulon Progo Regency with a target population of 75 employees. From 75, 66 of which used its data to be further analyzed in this study. Instruments used to collect research data through documentation and questionnaire. Testing the validity of instruments with the formula of Kendallu's tau_b Correlations, while the reliability of instruments was tested with the Cronbach Alpha formula with the significance of the number of correlation coefficient 0.05. While in the Data Analysis section is done by the analysis techniques of bivariate correlation and partial correlation with the help of SPSS (Statistical Product and Social Science) application. The results showed that the management of IT-based facilities and infrastructures (X) was not directly related to increased work productivity (y) because the relationship was mediated by the loyalty of employees (Z). This can be noted from a comparison of bivariate correlation between x and Y variables with the partial correlation between x, y, and z variables. The correlates of Bivariate (ryx) was 0.493 and a partial correlation (ryx. z) of 0.386.  Keywords: IT-based facilities and infrastructure, work productivity, loyalty Abstrak Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk: 1) mengetahui hubungan antara pengelolaan sarana dan prasarana berbasis IT terhadap peningkatan produktivitas kerja pegawai setelah dikontrol dengan loyalitas; 2) mengetahui besarnya hubungan antara pengelolaan sarana dan prasarana berbasis IT terhadap produktivitas kerja pegawai. Kata Kunci: Sarana dan Prasarana Berbasis IT, Produktivitas Kerja, Loyalitas

The education of researchers in Sweden is regulated by a nationwide reform implemented in 1969, which intended to limit doctoral programs to 4 years without diminishing quality. In an audit performed by the government in 1996, however, it was concluded that the reform had failed. Some 80% of the doctoral students admitted had dropped out, and only 1% finished their PhD degree within the stipulated 4 years. In an attempt to determine the causes of this situation, we singled out a social-science department at a major Swedish university and interviewed those doctoral students who had dropped out of the program. This department was found to be representative of the nationwide figures found in the audit. The students interviewed had all completed at least 50% of their PhD studies and had declared themselves as dropouts from this department. We conclude that the entire research education was characterized by a laissez-faire attitude where supervisors were nominated but abdicated. To correct this situation, we suggest that a learning alliance should be established between the supervisor and the student. At the core of the learning alliance is the notion of mutually forming a platform form which work can emerge in common collaboration. The learning alliance implies a contract for work, stating its goals, the tasks to reach these goals, and the interpersonal bonding needed to give force and endurance to the endeavor. Constant scrutiny of this contract and a mutual concern for the learning alliance alone can contribute to its strength.
