A Suitable Approach in Extracting Brain Source Signals from Disabled Patients

When multiple sources contribute competitively to the noise level, multi-channel control architecture is needed, leading to more cost and time for control computation. We, hence, are concerned with a single-channel control method with a single-reference signal obtained from a linear combination of the multiple source signals. First, we selected 3 source signal sensors for the reference signals and the error sensor, selected a proper actuator and designed the controllers: 3 cases of single-channel feedforward controllers with a single-reference signal respectively from the source signals, a multi-channel feedforward controller with the reference signals from the source signals, and the proposed controller with the reference signal from weighted sum of the source signals. The weighting factors and the filter coefficients of the controller were determined by the FxLMS algorithm. An experiment was then performed to confirm the effectiveness of the proposed method comparing the control performance with other methods for a tower air conditioner. The overall sound pressure level (SPL) detected by the error sensor is compared to evaluate their performance. The reduction in the overall SPL was obtained by 4.74 dB, 1.96 dB and 6.62 dB, respectively, when using each of the 3 reference signals. Also, the overall SPL was reduced by 7.12 dB when using the multi-reference controller and by 7.66 dB when using the proposed controller. Conclusively, under the multiple source contribution, a single-channel feed forward controller with the reference signal from a weighted sum of the source signals works well with lower cost than multi-channel feedforward controller.

AbstractWe study the relationship between patient choices and provider quality in a rehabilitation service for disabled patients who receive the service frequently but do not have access to quality information. Previous research has found a positive relationship between patient choices and provider quality in health services that patients typically do not have previous experience or use frequently. We contribute by examining choices of new patients and experienced patients who were either forced to switch or actively switched their provider. In the analysis, we combine register data on patients’ choices and switches with provider quality data from a competitive bidding, and estimate conditional logit choice models. The results show that all patients prefer high-quality providers within short distances. We find that the willingness to travel for quality is highest among new patients and active switchers. These results suggest that new patients and active switchers compare different alternatives more thoroughly, whereas forced switchers choose their new provider in limited time leading into poorer choices.

AbstractIdentifying highly disabled patients or at high risk of psychiatric comorbidity is crucial for migraine management. The burden of migraine increases with headache frequency, but the number of headache days (HDs) per month after which disability becomes severe or the risk of anxiety and depression is higher has not been established. Here, we estimate the number of HDs per month after which migraine is associated with higher risk of anxiety and depression, severe disability and lower quality of life. We analysed 468 migraine patients (mean age 36.8 ± 10.7; 90.2% female), of whom 38.5% had ≥ 15 HDs per month. Our results show a positive linear correlation between the number of HDs per month and the risk of anxiety (r = 0.273; p < 0.001), depression (r = 0.337; p < 0.001) and severe disability (r = 0.519; p < 0.001). The risk of anxiety is higher in patients having ≥ 3HDs per month, and those with ≥ 19HDs per month are at risk of depression. Moreover, patients suffering ≥ 10HDs per month have very severe disability. Our results suggest that migraine patients with ≥ 10HDs per month are very disabled and also that those with ≥ 3HDs per month should be screened for anxiety.

AbstractIn this paper, we analyse the seismic noise at Ischia Island (Italy) with the objective of detecting the hydrothermal source signals taking advantage of the Covid-19 quiescence due to lockdown (strong reduction of anthropogenic noise). We compare the characteristics of the background noise in pre-, during and post-lockdown in terms of spectral content, energy release (RMS) and statistical moments. The continuous noise is decomposed into two independent signals in the 1−2 Hz and 2−4 Hz frequency bands, becoming sharpened around 1 Hz and 3 Hz respectively in lockdown. We propose a conceptual model according to which a dendritic system of fluid-permeated fractures plays as neighbour closed organ pipes, for which the fundamental mode provides the persistent whisper and the first higher mode is activated in concomitance with energy increases. By assuming reasonable values for the sound speed in low vapor–liquid mass fraction for a two-phase fluid and considering temperatures and pressures of the shallow aquifer fed by sea, meteoric and deep hydrothermal fluids, we estimate pipe lengths in the range 200–300 m. In this scheme, Ischia organ-like system can play both continuous whisper and transients, depending on the energy variations sourced by pressure fluctuations in the hydrothermal fluids.

AbstractThis work shows that chaotic signals with different power spectrum and different positive Lyapunov exponents are robust to linear superposition, meaning that the superposition preserves the Lyapunov exponents and the information content of the source signals, even after being transmitted over non-ideal physical medium. This work tackles with great detail how chaotic signals and their information content are affected when travelling through medium that presents the non-ideal properties of multi-path propagation, noise and chaotic interference (linear superposition), and how this impacts on the proposed communication system. Physical media with other non-ideal properties (dispersion and interference with periodic signals) are also discussed. These wonderful properties that chaotic signals have allow me to propose a novel communication system based on chaos, where information composed from and to multiple users each operating with different base frequencies and that is carried by chaotic wavesignals, can be fully preserved after transmission in the open air wireless physical medium, and it can be trivially decoded with low probability of errors.

Studies have highlighted the importance of using new technologies during the planning of educational and didactic paths to develop skills and functions in disabled patients (Bruschi, 2001). Assistive technologies represent real opportunities of e-participation to social life (Calvani, 2011; Chiappetta Caiola, 2009), which also works as scaffolding to promote developing processes (Cooke & Husey, 2002). The authors’ contribution examines the importance of technologies in supporting subjects with mental retardation. It shows the usability of many inputs that offer disabled patients the possibility to exercise cognitive styles, their own characteristics and their own autonomies to increase motivation and self esteem. The aims of this research are a) verify the effectiveness of didactic software based on Precision Teaching method; b) verify gender differences. For this study 40 children have been selected (20 boys and 20 girls) with and without mental retardation. The research consisted of 3 phases: pre-training phase, training phase and post-training phase. Results show learning improvements in each group; in spite of students’ difficulties, the use of Precision Teaching has reduced significantly the initial cognitive gap, which refers to the number of correct responses (accuracy) and to time of response (fluency) relative to the learning of how to use money.

Online health information and services for patients were suggested to improve symptom management and treatment adherence, thereby contributing to healthcare optimization. This paper aimed to characterize multiple sclerosis (MS) patients Internet usage. Information regarding browsing habits, Internet reliability, and the medical team's attitude to information collected online was obtained by questionnaires from MS patients. Data was compared between nonbrowsers, browsers on MS topics, and browsers on non-MS topics only. From the 96 patients recruited, 61 (63.5%) performed MS-related searches. The most viewed topics were “understanding the disease” and “treatments”. Patients reported that the information helped coping with MS and assured them of the appropriateness of their therapy. Shorter disease duration was correlated with higher Internet activity. Disabled patients were more interested in online interaction with specialists and support groups. This paper suggests that MS patients benefit from online information, and it emphasizes the importance of resources tailored to patients needs.
