The cancer risks posed by ten substances in raw and purified water were estimated for each municipality in Japan to compare risks between raw and purified water, and inter-municipality. Water concentrations were estimated by use of statistical data. Assigning cancer unit risks to each substance and applying the assumption of additive toxicological effects to multiple carcinogens, total cancer risks of the waters were estimated. As a result, the geometric means of total cancer risks in raw and purified water were 1.16×10−5 and 2.18×10−5, respectively. In raw water, the contribution ratio of arsenic to total cancer risk accounted for 97%. In purified water, that of four trihalomethanes (THMs) accounted for 54%. The increase of total cancer risks in purified water was due to THMs. In regard to the geographical variation, the relationship between population size and total cancer risks were investigated. The result was that there were higher cancer risks in the big cities with the population more than a million both in raw and purified water. One plausible reason for the higher risks in purified water in the big cities is a larger chlorination dose due to the huge water supply areas. The reason for the increase in raw water remained unclear.

The microbiological quality of fresh blue crabmeat, soft- and hardshell clams and shucked Eastern oysters was determined at the retail (crabmeat, oysters) and wholesale (clams) levels. Geometric means of aerobic plate counts incubated at 35°C were: blue crabmeat 140,000 colony-forming units (CFU)/g, hardshell clams, 950 CFU/g, softshell clams 680 CFU/g and shucked Eastern oysters 390,000 CFU/g. Coliform geometric means ranged from 3,6/100 g for hardshell clams to 21/g for blue crabmeat. Means for fecal coliforms or Escherichia coli ranged from <3/100 g for clams to 27/100 g for oysters, The mean Staphylococcus aureus count in blue crabmeat was 10/g.

Objectives. Compare the Plan B levonorgestrel (LNG) area under the concentration- time curve (AUC12) prior to and with efavirenz (EFV).Design. Prospective, open-label, single-arm, equivalence study.Methods. Healthy HIV-negative subjects underwent 12 hr intensive pharmacokinetic (PK) sampling following single dose LNG alone and after 14 days of EFV. Geometric means, Geometric Mean Ratios, and 90% confidence intervals (CI) are reported for PK Parameters.T-tests were utilized. Clinical parameters and liver function tests (LFTs) were assessed.Results. 24 women enrolled and 21 completed the study. With EFV, LNG AUC12was reduced 56% (95% CI: 49%, 62%) from 42.9 to 17.8 ng*hr/mL, and maximum concentration (Cmax⁡) was reduced 41% (95% CI: 33%, 50%) from 8.4 to 4.6 ng/mL. LNG was well tolerated with no grade 3 or 4 treatment-related toxicities.Conclusions. EFV significantly reduced LNG exposures. Higher LNG doses may be required with EFV. These results reinforce the importance of effective contraception in women taking EFV.

The efficacy of a respirator under real workplace conditions is presented by its workplace protection factor (WPF). The aim of this study was to assess a portable measuring system for the determination of WPF for particulate filtering facepiece respirators. WPFs of CE-marked FFP2 and FFP3 filtering facepiece respirators were measured as a pilot test conducted at two workplaces: an inter-company training facility and a paper mill, with a total of seven test subjects. Each subject was quantitatively fit tested prior to the field measurements. Two TSI PortaCount instruments measured the particle concentrations simultaneously and continuously inside and outside the respirator for 15 min, with three repetitions. The results of the fit test (overall fit factor) ranged from 22 to 199. Individual WPF results ranged from 16 to 568 for FFP2 respirators, and from 13 to 232 for FFP3 respirators. The geometric means (GM) of the WPF were 135 with a 5th percentile value of 37 (FFP2), and 47 with a 5th percentile value of 12 (FFP3). This pilot test provides a new method of evaluating the workplace performance of filtering facepiece respirators.
