This article is concerned with defining and characterizing hierarchical structures in smooth dynamical systems. We define transitions between levels in a dynamical hierarchy by smooth projective maps from a phase space on a lower level, with high dimensionality, to a phase space on a higher level, with lower dimensionality. It is required that each level describe a self-contained deterministic dynamical system. We show that a necessary and sufficient condition for a projective map to be a transition between levels in the hierarchy is that the kernel of the differential of the map is tangent to an invariant manifold with respect to the flow. The implications of this condition are discussed in detail. We demonstrate two different causal dependences between degrees of freedom, and how these relations are revealed when the dynamical system is transformed into global Jordan form. Finally these results are used to define functional components on different levels, interaction networks, and dynamical hierarchies.

A novel approach to control chaotic systems has been developed. The approach employs the technique of phase space reconstruction in nonlinear dynamical systems theory to construct a linear part in the reconstructed system and design a feedback control law. The effectiveness of the proposed approach has been demonstrated through its applications to two well-known chaotic systems: Lorenz chaos and Rössler chaos.

We suggest a method for encoding messages by chaotic dynamical systems. The main idea is that by targeting the trajectories of some chaotic dynamical system with time constraint, someone can send a information to the remote recipient. The concept is based on setting receptors in the phase space of the dynamical system, and then targeting the trajectory between them. We considered the time of arriving from one receptor to another as a carrier of information obtained by searching in the table of values for arriving times.

This chapter explains in detail the current Hamiltonian formulation of SD, and the concept of Linking Theory of which (GR) and SD are two complementary gauge-fixings. The physical degrees of freedom of SD are identified, the simple way in which it solves the problem of time and the problem of observables in quantum gravity are explained, and the solution to the problem of constructing a spacetime slab from a solution of SD (and the related definition of physical rods and clocks) is described. Furthermore, the canonical way of coupling matter to SD is introduced, together with the operational definition of four-dimensional line element as an effective background for matter fields. The chapter concludes with two ‘structural’ results obtained in the attempt of finding a construction principle for SD: the concept of ‘symmetry doubling’, related to the BRST formulation of the theory, and the idea of ‘conformogeometrodynamics regained’, that is, to derive the theory as the unique one in the extended phase space of GR that realizes the symmetry doubling idea.

In this paper, we give a framework for synchronization of dynamical systems which unifies many results in synchronization and control of dynamical systems, in particular chaotic systems. We define concepts such as asymptotical synchronization, partial synchronization and synchronization error bounds. We show how asymptotical synchronization is related to asymptotical stability. The main tool we use to prove asymptotical stability and synchronization is Lyapunov stability theory. We illustrate how many previous results on synchronization and control of chaotic systems can be derived from this framework. We will also give a characterization of robustness of synchronization and show that master-slave asymptotical synchronization in Chua’s oscillator is robust.

Studies of nonlinear dynamical systems with many degrees of freedom show that the behavior of these systems is significantly different as compared with the behavior of systems with less than two degrees of freedom. These findings motivated us to carry out a survey of research focusing on the behavior of high-dimensional chaos, which include onset of chaos, routes to chaos and the persistence of chaos. This paper reports on various methods of generating and investigating nonlinear, dissipative and driven dynamical systems that exhibit high-dimensional chaos, and reviews recent results in this new field of research. We study high-dimensional Lorenz, Duffing, Rössler and Van der Pol oscillators, modified canonical Chua's circuits, and other dynamical systems and maps, and we formulate general rules of high-dimensional chaos. Basic techniques of chaos control and synchronization developed for high-dimensional dynamical systems are also reviewed.

Recently, it was demonstrated that two chaotic dynamical systems can synchronize each other, leading to interesting applications as secure communications. We propose in this paper a special class of dynamical systems, noninvertible discrete piecewise linear, emphasizing on interesting advantages they present compared with continuous and differentiable nonlinear ones. The generic aspect of such systems, the simplicity of numerical implementation, and the robustness to mismatch of technological parameters make them good candidates. The classical concept of controllability in the control theory is presented and used in order to choose and predict the number of appropriate variables to be transmitted for synchronization. A necessary and sufficient condition of chaotic synchronization is established without computing numerical quantities, introducing a state affinity structure of chaotic systems which provides an a priori establishment of synchronization.

Abstract. An infinite number of unstable periodic orbits (UPOs) are embedded in a chaotic system which models some complex phenomenon. Several algorithms which extract UPOs numerically from continuous-time chaotic systems have been proposed. In this article the damped Newton-Raphson-Mees algorithm is reviewed, and some important techniques and remarks concerning the practical numerical computations are exemplified by employing the Lorenz system.

In this paper, the analytical dynamics for singularity, switchability, and bifurcations of a 2-DOF friction-induced oscillator is investigated. The analytical conditions of the domain flow switchability at the boundaries and edges are developed from the theory of discontinuous dynamical systems, and the switchability conditions of boundary flows from domain and edge flows are presented. From the singularity and switchability of flow to the boundary, grazing, sliding and edge bifurcations are obtained. For a better understanding of the motion complexity of such a frictional oscillator, switching sets and mappings are introduced, and mapping structures for periodic motions are adopted. Using an eigenvalue analysis, the stability and bifurcation analysis of periodic motions in the friction-induced system is carried out. Analytical predictions and parameter maps of periodic motions are performed. Illustrations of periodic motions and the analytical conditions are completed. The analytical conditions and methodology can be applied to the multi-degrees-of-freedom frictional oscillators in the same fashion.
