A numerical three-dimensional contact model is presented to investigate the contact behavior of multilayered elastic-perfectly plastic solids with rough surfaces. The surface displacement and contact pressure distributions are obtained based on the variational principle with fast Fourier transform (FFT)-based scheme. Von Mises yield criterion is used to determine the onset of yield. The effective hardness is modeled and plays role when the local displacement meet the maximum displacement criterion. Simulations are performed to obtain the contact pressures, fractional total contact area, fractional plastic contact area, and surface/subsurface stresses. These contact statistics are analyzed to study the effects of the layer-to-substrate ratios of stiffness and hardness, surface roughness, and layers thickness of rough, two-layered elastic/plastic solids. The results yield insight into the effects of stiffness and hardness of layers and substrates, surface roughness, and applied load on the contact performance. The layer parameters leading to low friction, stiction, and wear are investigated and identified.

Friction/stiction and wear are among the main issues in microelectromechanical systems (MEMS/NEMS) devices having contact interfaces. Relevant parameters, i.e., layers thickness, need to be optimized. The contact analyses of multilayered structure under both dry and wet conditions are necessary to optimize these parameters. This study presents a first attempt to perform three-dimensional contact analysis of multilayered solids with rough surfaces in both dry and wet conditions. The surface displacements and contact pressure distributions are obtained based on variational principle with fast Fourier transform scheme. The effective hardness is modeled and plays a role when the local displacement meets the maximum displacement criterion. Simulations are performed to obtain the contact pressures, fractional total contact area, fractional plastic contact area, surface/subsurface stresses. Relative meniscus forces are obtained with the presence of an ultrathin liquid film for different loads and layers properties. These contact statistics and meniscus forces are analyzed to study the effects of layer-to-substrate ratios of stiffness and hardness, and the layers thickness of rough, two-layered elastic/plastic solids. The methods to decrease friction/stiction and wear are investigated, and the optimum layer parameters are identified.

A thermomechanical coupling between a hyper-viscoelastic tire and a representative pavement layer was conducted to assess the effect of various temperature profiles on the mechanical behavior of a rolling truck tire. The two deformable bodies, namely the tire and pavement layer, were subjected to steady-state-uniform and non-uniform temperature profiles to identify the significance of considering temperature as a variable in contact-stress prediction. A myriad of ambient, internal air, and pavement-surface conditions were simulated, along with combinations of applied tire load, tire-inflation pressure, and traveling speed. Analogous to winter, the low temperature profiles induced a smaller tire-pavement contact area that resulted in stress localization. On the other hand, under high temperature conditions during the summer, higher tire deformation resulted in lower contact-stress magnitudes owing to an increase in the tire-pavement contact area. In both conditions, vertical and longitudinal contact stresses are impacted, while transverse contact stresses are relatively less affected. This behavior, however, may change under a non-free-rolling condition, such as braking, accelerating, and cornering. By incorporating temperature into the tire-pavement interaction model, changes in the magnitude and distribution of the three-dimensional contact stresses were manifested. This would have a direct implication on the rolling resistance and near-surface behavior of flexible pavements.

Energy dissipation in mechanical joints occurs as a result of micro-slip motion between contacting rough surfaces. An account of this phenomenon is especially challenging due to the vast differences in the length and time scale differences between the macro-mechanical structure and the micron-scale events at the joint interface. This paper considers the contact between two nominally flat surfaces containing micron-scale roughness. The rough surface interaction is viewed as a multi-sphere elastic interaction subject to a periodic tangential force. It combines the Mindlin’s formulation [1, 2] for the elastic interaction of two spheres with the Greenwood and Williamson’s [3] statistical approach for the contact of two nominally flat rough surfaces so as to develop a model for multi-sphere problem in which sphere radii, contact load and the number of spheres in contact can only be known in a statistical sense and not deterministically.

Using modern EHL programs it is relatively simple to determine the pressures and clearances in rough EHL contacts. The pressures may then be used to calculate the subsurface stresses in the two contacting components. However, the results depend on the assumptions made about the fluid’s rheology. While it is possible to measure the clearances using interferometric techniques, measurement of either the pressures or stresses is extremely difficult. However it is these, rather than the clearances, that determine the life of the contact. In previous papers the authors have described how the inverse method may be used to validate the stress predictions for contacts with transverse roughness. This type of contact has fluid flow in only one plane and it remained necessary to check the results for more general rough surfaces where the flow is three-dimensional. Accordingly, the inverse method is extended, in this paper, to a situation where out-of-plane flow is significant. The paper describes the approach and presents some preliminary results for rolling contacts.

Background The effects of dorsal angulation deformity on in vitro distal radioulnar joint (DRUJ) contact patterns are not well understood. Purpose The purpose of this study was to utilize intercartilage distance to examine the effects of forearm rotation angle, distal radius deformity, and triangular fibrocartilage complex (TFCC) sectioning on DRUJ contact area and centroid position. Methods An adjustable implant permitted the creation of simulated intact state and dorsal angulation deformities of 10, 20, and 30 degrees. Three-dimensional cartilage models of the distal radius and ulna were created using computed tomography data. Using optically tracked motion data, the relative position of the cartilage models was rendered and used to measure DRUJ cartilage contact mechanics. Results DRUJ contact area was highest between 10 and 30 degrees of supination. TFCC sectioning caused a significant decrease in contact area with a mean reduction of 11 ± 7 mm2 between the TFCC intact and sectioned conditions across all variables. The position of the contact centroid moved volarly and proximally with supination for all variables. Deformity had a significant effect on the location of the contact centroid along the volar–dorsal plane. Conclusion Contact area in the DRUJ was maximal between 10 and 30 degrees of supination during the conditions tested. There was a significant effect of simulated TFCC rupture on contact area in the DRUJ, with a mean contact reduction of 11 ± 7 mm2 after sectioning. Increasing dorsal angulation caused the contact centroid to move progressively more volar in the sigmoid notch.

The discrete-element model for flows over rough surfaces was recently modified to predict drag and heat transfer for flow over randomly rough surfaces. However, the current form of the discrete-element model requires a blockage fraction and a roughness-element diameter distribution as a function of height to predict the drag and heat transfer of flow over a randomly rough surface. The requirement for a roughness-element diameter distribution at each height from the reference elevation has hindered the usefulness of the discrete-element model and inhibited its incorporation into a computational fluid dynamics (CFD) solver. To incorporate the discrete-element model into a CFD solver and to enable the discrete-element model to become a more useful engineering tool, the randomly rough surface characterization must be simplified. Methods for determining characteristic diameters for drag and heat transfer using complete three-dimensional surface measurements are presented. Drag and heat transfer predictions made using the model simplifications are compared to predictions made using the complete surface characterization and to experimental measurements for two randomly rough surfaces. Methods to use statistical surface information, as opposed to the complete three-dimensional surface measurements, to evaluate the characteristic dimensions of the roughness are also explored.

One of the important problems appearing in experimental realizations of artificial adhesives inspired by gecko foot hair is so-called clusterization. If an artificially produced structure is flexible enough to allow efficient contact with natural rough surfaces, after a few attachment–detachment cycles, the fibres of the structure tend to adhere one to another and form clusters. Normally, such clusters are much larger than original fibres and, because they are less flexible, form much worse adhesive contacts especially with the rough surfaces. Main problem here is that the forces responsible for the clusterization are the same intermolecular forces which attract fibres to fractal surface of the substrate. However, arrays of real gecko setae are much less susceptible to this problem. One of the possible reasons for this is that ends of the seta have more sophisticated non-uniformly distributed three-dimensional structure than that of existing artificial systems. In this paper, we simulated three-dimensional spatial geometry of non-uniformly distributed branches of nanofibres of the setal tip numerically, studied its attachment–detachment dynamics and discussed its advantages versus uniformly distributed geometry.

Abstract The measurement of the real contact area between rough surfaces is one of the most challenging problems in contact mechanics and is of importance to understand some physical mechanisms in tribology. Based on the frustrated total internal reflection, a new apparatus is designed to measure the real contact area. For metallic samples with various surface topographies, the relation between normal load and the real contact area is measured. The unloading process is first considered to distinguish the contribution of elasticity and plasticity in contact with rough surfaces. It is found that both elasticity and plasticity are involved throughout the continuous loading process, different from some present understanding and assumptions that they play at different loading stages. A quantitative parameter is proposed to indicate the contribution of plasticity. The present work not only provides an experimental method to measure the real contact area but figures out how elastic and plastic deformation works in contact with rough surfaces.
