The Yangtze River Economic Belt is the most important manufacturing economic belt in China. The level of manufacturing green innovation efficiency of the Yangtze River Economic Belt directly affects the overall competitiveness of China’s manufacturing industry. With panel data from 11 provinces and cities along the Yangtze River Economic Belt in China for the period of 2008 to 2017, this paper applies the slacks-based measure (SBM)-data envelopment analysis (DEA) model and panel Tobit model to conduct an empirical study of the effects of government research and development subsidies and environmental regulations on the green innovation efficiency of the manufacturing industry of the Yangtze River Economic Belt. The results show that, firstly, government R&D subsidies and environmental regulations are both conducive to improving the green innovation efficiency of the manufacturing industry of the Yangtze River Economic Belt; secondly, because of the fact that the interaction terms between government R&D subsidies and environmental regulations failed to pass the significance test, the positive moderating effects of R&D subsidies on environmental regulations and green innovation efficiency of the manufacturing industry are not obvious; thirdly, in terms of control variables, strengthening agglomeration is the only factor that is positively correlated with green innovation efficiency improvement of the manufacturing industry. Enterprise scale and industrial structure have negative effects on green innovation efficiency improvement, and the openness of economy has no correlation with green innovation efficiency.

To promote the high-quality development of the Yangtze River economic belt is a major development strategy in China. As the lifeblood of the national economy, manufacturing industry is of great significance to realize the high-quality development of the Yangtze River economic belt. Based on the analysis of the overall situation of the manufacturing industry in the Yangtze River economic belt and the diamond model theory, this paper constructs an evaluation index system of manufacturing industry competitiveness with 4 first-class indexes and 16 second-class indexes, comprehensively evaluates the manufacturing industry competitiveness of each region by entropy method, and ranks the whole country. The results show that the manufacturing competitiveness of 11 provinces and cities in the Yangtze River economic belt is quite different and has obvious regional characteristics. The competitiveness of manufacturing industry in downstream regions is strong, while that in Yunnan and Guizhou provinces is weak, ranking at the bottom. Through in-depth analysis, it is found that there are some problems, such as unbalanced development, homogenization of industry, unreasonable layout of manufacturing industry. Combined with the development experience of excellent manufacturing industry and the regional characteristics of the Yangtze River economic belt, this paper proposes that we should speed up the industrial agglomeration, adhere to the innovation driven strategy, optimize the industrial layout and other ways to enhance the manufacturing competitiveness of the Yangtze River economic belt and promote the high-quality development of the Yangtze River economic belt.

To explore the evolution mechanism of manufacturing green development efficiency is of great significance to realize green transformation of manufacturing industry in the Yangtze River Economic Belt. This paper fully considers the resource inputs and undesirable outputs in the production process and applies WSR methodology to construct the index system of influencing factors. Based on the panel data of 11 provinces and cities in the Yangtze River Economic Belt from 1998 to 2017, the super-SBM model is used to calculate the manufacturing green development efficiency. Then, the regional differences of manufacturing green development efficiency in the Yangtze River Economic Belt are deeply analyzed. Finally, Tobit model is applied to analyze the influencing factors of the manufacturing green development efficiency. And it turns out, during the statistics period, manufacturing green development efficiency in the Yangtze River Economic Belt is “U” shaped distribution, the mean value of each province over the years is 0.812, which is at the medium development level; the manufacturing green development efficiency in the Yangtze River Economic Belt is on the rise, and the low scale efficiency is the main reason that restricts the manufacturing green development efficiency in the Yangtze River Economic Belt. All the influencing factors have different effects on the manufacturing green development efficiency in different regions. Therefore, this paper puts forward corresponding policy suggestions from the three dimensions of Wuli, Shili and Renli.

The green transformation of the manufacturing industry is crucial for high-quality development of the Yangtze River Economic Belt, and environmental regulation and technological innovation may play key roles. Considering the undesirable output of the manufacturing industry, this paper adopted the undesirable-SE-SBM Model to measure the green transformation efficiency, which can reflect the core transformation performance. On this basis, this paper respectively adopted system generalized method of moments (SYS-GMM) and differential generalized method of moments (DIF-GMM) to explore the driving factors of green transformation, which fully considered the lag variable of transformation efficiency. The estimated results of green transformation showed that the efficiency of the Yangtze River Economic Belt has maintained an overall growth trend, while that of the eastern regions was higher than that of the central and western regions. The regional difference of transformation efficiencies showed a trend of convergence first and then expansion, however, a few regions such as Chongqing have achieved leapfrog development. The estimated results of driving factors showed the first-stage lag affected the green transformation positively, while the second-stage lag had a significantly negative effect. The ratchet effect and cumulative effect led to the continued efforts on green transformation, however, the timeliness of policy might cause a rebound in practice. As mentioned in green paradox, the environmental regulation had a negative effect, which might bring compliance costs. The technology innovation level indeed promoted the green transformation of manufacturing, but the scientific research investment did not exert the expected positive effect, while the utilization of many research funds lacked market orientation. Economic development level had a negative effect on green transformation, and it would play a positive effect only if it reached a certain stage. The industrialization and urbanization affected the efficiency positively, and the external dependence degree had a significant negative effect. It was not clear whether foreign direct investment (FDI) brought a pollution haven or pollution halo effect. In view of these conclusions, local governments should strictly enforce environmental regulations, build the regional green innovation system, improve marketization of research funds, optimize the export structure, and promote new urbanization and new industrialization.

Abstract The rapid development of e-commerce has greatly promoted the development of the modern logistics industry. The application level of e-commerce and the application status of modern logistics largely determine the development of regional economic structure in a region. Under this circumstance, it is particularly important to comprehensively strengthen the research and analysis of the impact of e-commerce and modern logistics on the regional economic structure and scope, and promote the coordinated development between each other. As one of the most developed regions in China, the Yangtze River Delta region has achieved certain achievements in the development of regional logistics industry and e-commerce, and plays an important role in the process of regional integration in the Yangtze River Delta. Therefore, this paper takes the Yangtze River Delta as the research object, and empirically analyses the development status of the logistics industry and e-commerce in the Yangtze River Delta region and its contribution to regional economic growth. On this basis, it puts forward countermeasures to further increase the contribution of the logistics industry and e-commerce in the Yangtze River Delta region to economic growth. This will provide a reference for the construction of a coordinated regional logistics-e-commerce system and the realization of regional economic integration in the Yangtze River Delta region.

Over recent decades, the application of artificial intelligence methods in manufacturing has led to new spheres of research such as the Internet of Things, Cyber–Physical Systems, and Cloud Computing and Big Data, leading to the so-called Industry 4.0. However, to date, little research has been geared towards assessing the factors that influence intelligent manufacturing on a regional scale. Addressing this problem, this paper constructs an evaluation index system for the Yangtze River Economic Belt (YREB) intelligent manufacturing sector using eleven years (2008–2018) of provincial panel data. The entropy method is applied to three evaluation criteria, namely intelligent innovation, equipment, and profit, to construct an evaluation index system. An analysis of the results revealed that the level intelligentization of the manufacturing industry of the YREB increases yearly, and that intelligent innovations are notably occurring at a faster rate than profits. Disproportional enterprise returns on investment have occurred, which decreases enterprise motivation to be innovative in the first place. Additionally, it was also observed that FDI, financial development, government intervention, and the level of opening-up were the primary factors modulating regional intelligent manufacturing levels.

Logistics is the booster of economic development, and it is imperative to further improve the logistics energy efficiency and adjust its development model. This paper is an attempt to investigate the logistics energy efficiency and main influencing factors of the Yangtze River Economic Belt, which is the most economically intensive region that spans East, Central, and West China. The input-oriented SBM-DEA model is employed to identify factors such as energy input, undesirable output, and service capacity output as well as the logistics energy efficiency of Yangtze River Economic Belt. Energy efficiency is then further decomposed into pure technical efficiency, scale efficiency, and technical efficiency, from the perspective of which provinces and cities are compared. The research results show that the logistics energy efficiency of Yangtze River Economic Belt needs to be further improved and that energy efficiency differs greatly among cities and provinces, indicating that the development is quite unbalanced in different areas. Therefore, the local government should develop development strategies according to the main influencing factors and constraints to the local logistics industry, so as to optimize and upgrade the energy structure of the logistics industry.
