El presente artículo tiene por objeto mostrar el papel que juega el desarrollo sostenible, poniendo énfasis en el importante rol que juega el mismo en el desarrollo urbano, las empresas y el territorio. En una nueva visión de economía circular, el desarrollo sostenible se convierte en fuente capaz de generar ecoinnovación y modelos productivos basados en la nueva economía “verde”. En definitiva, se pretende dar una visión holística del desarrollo sostenible y reflexionar sobre su impacto en la felicidad colectiva de los territorios, tema muy relevante hoy en día, pero donde son escasas las investigaciones que expliquen dichas relaciones con el enfoque adoptado para la elaboración del presente artículo.ABSTRACTThe present article aims to show the role of sustainable development, emphasizing the important role that it plays in companies and the territory. In a new vision of circular economy, sustainable development becomes a source capable of generating eco-innovation and productive models based on the new "green" economy. In short, it aims to give a holistic view of sustainable development and reflect on their impact on the collective happiness of the territories, a very relevant inssue today, but there is not enough research to explain these relationships according to the information consulted for the preparation of this article.

The article examines the infrastructure approach to the implementation of the concept of sustainable development in the Arctic zone of the Russian Federation (AZRF). This is done from the point of view of compliance of this development with the so-called megatrends of the world economy, highlighting theoretical, conceptual, and technological aspects. he characteristic of modern geoeconomic and geopolitical factors of development of the AZRF is given. A brief comparative analysis of applicability of economic models that are relevant the concept of sustainable development in the case of the Russian Arctic: bioeconomy, green economy, and circular economy. A few conditions for the implementation of the circular economy model in the Russian Arctic is considered. In connection with the representation of the AZRF as a heterogeneous socio-economic, real-virtual, socio-cyber-physical space, a special role of logistics infrastructure is shown as necessary condition for ensuring the sustainable development of this largest Russian region. The emphasis is made on the need to conceptualize the concept of "logistics infrastructure". Based on a holistic approach to logistics, a 5-layer (underwater, water, ground, air, space) conceptual research holistic model is proposed that could be used for designing, constructing, and monitoring the system of logistics flows in the Russian Arctic. The result of an analytical assessment (in dimensions of "digitalization" and "sustainability") of the state of the Art and possible development for the underwater layer of the logistics infrastructure of the Russian Arctic. The conclusions of the article could be useful both for designing the logistics infrastructure of the Russian Arctic, and for designing the courses of disciplines of higher education relevant to the problem under consideration.

Summary The following paper explores circular economy as a model of management within the framework of sustainable development. Its structure comprises 4 parts. The first part illustrates the role of sustainable development as an emerging paradigm in the theory of modern economics and in the recent policy of the European Union. In the second part, the authors demonstrate the applicability of sustainable development based on the relevant management models on the micro, meso and macro levels of economy. The third part discusses the concept of circular economy, in particular the various definitions of the phenomenon, its advantages over the linear economy, the role of innovations in its development and how to overcome barriers to its application. The fourth part outlines the current state of implementation of the circular economy in the EU in regard to its normative implications for the member countries. The conclusions close the exploration. The paper is theoretical, based on the review of the international literature on the subject. The unique contribution of the authors consists of the systematic analysis of the term circular economy as a holistic model of sustainable development and of illustrating the benefits of its promotion in the management practice.

A green economy specifically considers the welfare of the environment and is closely aligned with sustainable development—in both, the use of natural resources should be less than their natural production. In this article, the concept of a green economy is discussed from the viewpoint of water services, a crucial part of a sustainable society, with the objective of enhancing knowledge about sustainable and resilient water services that will meet society’s future demands. Drawing from a literature review and a stakeholder workshop attended by 68 experts, it seeks to answer three research questions: (a) What are appropriate and sustainable urban water supply and sanitation policies for a society that is adopting the basic principles of a green economy? (b) What should be the role of water supply and sanitation in a green and circular economy and what are the current challenges to meeting this objective? and (c) What actions are needed in the Finnish water and sanitation services (WSS) sector to effectively meet the requirements of a green and circular economy? The results are applied to the specific case of Finland, and recommendations and conclusions for the Finnish society and its water services are presented.

Competitiveness race in the global economy, on the one side, and the acknowledgement of the sustainable development dimension, on the other side, brings Europe against extraordinary challenges but also to great opportunities. Mapping the future sustainable competitiveness creates a need for research initiatives to develop the new concept of competitiveness, with much of the research focusing on how sustainable development and competitiveness interact. The changing policy context, growing role of sustainable development, the transition to a green economy and the new European Union strategy Europe 2020 (2010) for smart, sustainable and inclusive growth leads to the “rethinking” of the main drivers of the sustainable competitiveness in the long prosperity and the future competitiveness leadership. The approach to natural resources, especially forests, as to the one of the future sustainable competitiveness resources, with the specific focus on its ownership is addressed in this article. Green economy models, in particular, the circular economy model, are capable of creating promising ways to build an ecological future, which requires modernization of the system with respect to a number of environmental methods and elements. The article discusses examples of implementing the key principles of sustainable development and the green economy in the activities of foreign energy and oil and gas companies, which represent a segment with the most powerful potential for introducing new innovative processes and conducting environmental projects.

Following the 1992 Earth Summit in Rio de Janeiro, the 2002 World Summit on Sustainable Development (WSSD) in Johannesburg, and the 2012 Rio+20 Earth Summit in Rio de Janeiro, sustainable development has become a widely accepted concept. World decision makers are seeking a more sustainable development path through the ongoing UN Post-2105 Agenda discussions, which includes key themes like the Green Economy (GE) and the Sustainable Development Goals (SDG). They are hoping to find integrated solutions to many critical problems, including traditional development issues (such as energy scarcity, economic stagnation, poverty, hunger, and illness), as well as newer challenges (like climate change and globalisation). Energy is critical for sustainable development. Sustainable energy development (SED) is an operational framework involving the harnessing of energy resources for human use, in a manner that supports lasting development [Munasinghe (1995)]. We begin with a review of sustainable development itself, before describing the key role of energy. The World Commission on Environment and Development originally defined it as “development which meets the needs of the present, without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs”, and there have been many subsequent redefinitions.

During the end of the 20th century and beginning of 21st century, there is a trend to evaluating the actions undertaken to improve the socio-economic environment in which we live, to achieve a greater level of wellbeing for all citizens. In the context of Stakeholder Theory, considering an organization should always operate towards creating positive value for society, the creation of the UN Global Compact and the 17 Sustainable Development Goals created a shift in many regions. The present study evaluates this context and how the implementation of circular economy policies has affected the achievement of SDGs in Spain. Specifically, the role of different private and public agents is evaluated in the tire manufacturing industry and the impact in each of the SDGs. Results show positive results as well as areas of improvement to further improve the roadmap towards achieving the 17 SDGs.
