Abstract We investigate the disk partition function for the open string. This is a subtle problem because of the presence of a residual gauge group PSL(2, ℝ) on the worldsheet even after fixing the conformal gauge. It naively has infinite volume and leads to a vanishing answer. We use different methods that all demonstrate that PSL(2, ℝ) effectively behaves like a group with finite negative volume in the path integral, which leads to a simple prescription for the computation of the disk partition function. We apply our findings to give a simple rederivation of the D-brane tensions.

Wilson loop elements on torus are introduced into the partition function of open strings as Polyakov’s path integral at one-loop level. Mass spectra from compactification and expected symmetry breaking are illustrated by choosing the correct weight for the contributions from annulus and Möbius strip. We show that Jacobi’s imaginary transformation connects the mass spectra with the Wilson loops. The application to thermopartition function and cosmological implications are briefly discussed.

Abstract We give an interpretation of the holographic correspondence between two-dimensional BF theory on the punctured disk with gauge group PSL(2, ℝ) and Schwarzian quantum mechanics in terms of a Drinfeld-Sokolov reduction. The latter, in turn, is equivalent to the presence of certain edge states imposing a first class constraint on the model. The constrained path integral localizes over exceptional Virasoro coadjoint orbits. The reduced theory is governed by the Schwarzian action functional generating a Hamiltonian S1-action on the orbits. The partition function is given by a sum over topological sectors (corresponding to the exceptional orbits), each of which is computed by a formal Duistermaat-Heckman integral.

We discuss possible definition of open string path integral in the presence of additional boundary couplings corresponding to the presence of masses at the ends of the string. These couplings are not conformally invariant implying that as in a non-critical string case one is to integrate over the one-dimensional metric or reparametrizations of the boundary. We compute the partition function on the disc in the presence of an additional constant gauge field background and comment on the structure of the corresponding scattering amplitudes.

In previous work, the conformal-gauge two-dimensional quantum gravity in the BRS formalism has been solved completely in terms of Wightman functions. In the present paper, this result is extended to the closed and open bosonic strings of finite length; the open-string case is nothing but the Kato–Ogawa string theory. The field-equation anomaly found previously, which means a slight violation of a field equation at the level of Wightman functions, remains existent in the finite-string cases. By using this fact, a BRS charge nilpotent even for D≠26 is explicitly constructed in the framework of the Kato–Ogawa string theory. The FP-ghost vacuum structure of the Kato–Ogawa theory is made more transparent; the appearance of half-integral ghost numbers and the artificial introduction of an indefinite metric are avoided.

Abstract We revisit the problem of matching the strong coupling expansion of the $$ \frac{1}{2} $$ 1 2 BPS circular Wilson loops in $$ \mathcal{N} $$ N = 4 SYM and ABJM gauge theories with their string theory duals in AdS5× S5 and AdS4× CP3, at the first subleading (one-loop) order of the expansion around the minimal surface. We observe that, including the overall factor 1/gs of the inverse string coupling constant, as appropriate for the open string partition function with disk topology, and a universal prefactor proportional to the square root of the string tension T, both the SYM and ABJM results precisely match the string theory prediction. We provide an explanation of the origin of the $$ \sqrt{T} $$ T prefactor based on special features of the combination of one-loop determinants appearing in the string partition function. The latter also implies a natural generalization Zχ ∼ ($$ \sqrt{T}/{g}_{\mathrm{s}} $$ T / g s )χ to higher genus contributions with the Euler number χ, which is consistent with the structure of the 1/N corrections found on the gauge theory side.

Abstract We propose a double quantization of four-dimensional $$ \mathcal{N} $$ N = 2 Seiberg-Witten geometry, for all classical gauge groups and a wide variety of matter content. This can be understood as a set of certain non-perturbative Schwinger-Dyson identities, following the program initiated by Nekrasov [1]. The construction relies on the computation of the instanton partition function of the gauge theory on the so-called Ω-background on ℝ4, in the presence of half-BPS codimension 4 defects. The two quantization parameters are identified as the two parameters of this background. The Seiberg-Witten curve of each theory is recovered in the flat space limit. Whenever possible, we motivate our construction from type IIA string theory.

Starting from an [Formula: see text] supersymmetric electric gauge theory with the multiple product gauge group and the bifundamentals, we apply Seiberg dual to each gauge group, obtain the [Formula: see text] supersymmetric dual magnetic gauge theories with dual matters including the gauge singlets. Then we describe the intersecting brane configurations, where there are NS-branes and D4-branes (and anti-D4-branes), of type IIA string theory corresponding to the meta-stable nonsupersymmetric vacua of this gauge theory. We also discuss the case where the orientifold 4-planes are added into the above brane configuration. Next, by adding an orientifold 6-plane, we apply to an [Formula: see text] supersymmetric electric gauge theory with the multiple product gauge group (where a single symplectic or orthogonal gauge group is present) and the bifundamentals. Finally, we describe the other cases where the orientifold 6-plane intersects with NS-brane.
