This article presents the design of a tuned mass damper with a conical spring to enable tuning to the natural frequency of the system at multiple values, as may be convenient in case of a system with fluctuations in the mass. The principle and design procedure of the conical spring in the context of a varying mass system are presented. A passive feedback control mechanism based on a simple pulley-mass system is devised to cater to the multi-tuning requirements. A design example of an elevated water tank with fluctuating water content, subjected to ground excitation, is considered to numerically illustrate the efficiency of such a tuned mass damper associated with the conical spring. The conical spring is designed based on the tuning requirements at different mass conditions of the elevated water tank by satisfying the allowable load bearing capacity of the spring. Comparisons are made with the conventional passive tuned mass damper with a linear spring tuned to the full tank condition. Results from time history analysis reveal that the conical spring-tuned mass damper can be successfully designed to remain tuned and thereby achieve significant response reductions under stiffening conditions of the primary structure, whereas the linear spring-tuned mass damper suffers performance degradation because of detuning, whenever there is any fluctuation in the system mass.

To improve the serviceability of tall buildings, several types of vibration control systems have been developed. The tuned liquid damper (TLD) has advantages, such as simple adjustment of natural frequency, easy installation, and low maintenance. Since water tanks at the top of tall buildings can be directly modeled as a TLD system, it is more practical than any other vibration control system in Korea. Since most of the tanks in Korea have embossments on the wall, the structural characteristics are different from those of tanks used in other countries. As the damping ratio of the TLD depends on several factors, such as the magnitude and frequency of applied load, the shape of the tank, wall roughness, and so forth, it is difficult to evaluate the control performance of the tank exactly. In this study, the characteristics of the water sloshing damper with embossments (WSDE) are evaluated and the equation for equivalent damping ratio is proposed. To clarify the damping effect of a high-rise building with a damping device subject to random excitation, an experiment of a coupled structural model with a water tank was conducted. The parameters were mass ratio of water to model structure, number of wire screens, and shape factor of the water tank. The peak displacement, acceleration response, and standard deviation of the experimental results are analyzed. The coupled structural model with a water tank shows lower maximum and standard deviation responses than those of the structural model alone.Key words: water sloshing damper with embossment, vibration control, structural test, tall buildings.

Reinforced concrete elevated water tanks supported on shaft type staging system are popularly constructed now a days for storage of water for water supply schemes. If slip form is used for casting of the shaft staging, the water towers generally require lesser time for construction. Elevated water tanks are top heavy structure especially in the tank full condition. It is often a critical question in structural design that what should be the proper structural model adopted for design of such class of structure. Should the shaft be designed as a hollow cylindrical column subjected to axial compression or is it essentially a R.C. cylindrical shell subjected to membrane forces under axial compression. To better understand it is proposed to cast such R.C. shells and after water curing for 28 days shall be subjected to axial compressive load in a compressive strength testing machine. The failure pattern of the shells shall be observed critically to get a proper understanding of behavior of such R.C shaft supported elevated water tank structures.

During post-earthquake requirement the staging of elevated water tanks are considered as essential structures. Failure of staging leads to collapse of watertank so required to control the vibration of staging. In This paper elevated circular tank supported with frame was modeled to control the vibration of staging. Non-linear dynamic analysis (time-history analysis) was performed on model by using SAP2000 software to study the seismic behaviour. The additional dissipation of energy occurs by using damper constitute an effective technique for the earthquake reduction of staging members and In this study an attempt has been made to use the X-plate metallic steel damper for reducing the seismic response.
