Digital Libraries (DLs) are extremely complex information systems that support the creation, management, distribution, and preservation of complex information resources, while allowing effective and efficient interaction among the several societies that benefit from DL content and services. In this paper, we focus on our experience facing challenges of building, maintaining, and developing the Networked University Digital Library (<A HREF="http://www.nudl.org/">www.nudl.org</A>), an extension of the Networked Digital Library of Theses and Dissertations (<A HREF="http://www.ndltd.org/">www.ndltd.org</A>). NUDL is a worldwide initiative that addresses making the intellectual property produced in universities more accessible, stimulating international collaboration across all disciplines. We detail technological aspects of our solutions and research activities carried out to provide powerful and enriched services for the communities served by this initiative.

Para medir a atividade científica, tem-se utilizado os indicadores bibliográficos que se baseiam em análise estatística de dados quantitativos encontrados na produção técnica e científica. O objetivo deste estudo foi delinear um panorama da produção científica da temática Tecnologias de Informação e Comunicação em bibliotecas, de modo a identificar: os autores mais produtivos (Lei de Lotka); a evolução histórica do número de publicações e os periódicos que mais publicaram sobre a temática (Lei de Bradford); e as principais abordagens que cobrem o tema (Lei de Zipf). A metodologia seguiu quatro etapas: escolha da Web of Science como base de dados de consulta; configuração dos parâmetros das estratégias de busca e do período de cobertura; depuração dos resultados; e tratamento dos dados de pesquisa. Os resultados mostraram que os primeiros trabalhos indexados na Web of Science datam de 1988 e que, até 2014, foram produzidos 458 artigos. A produção científica se mostrou estável nos últimos anos. Os autores mais produtivos foram Gomez, Fourie e Aharony. Não se observou uma alta concentração em um grupo específico, mas sim uma ampla difusão de autores. Identificou-se que são cinco os periódicos com maior produtividade, responsáveis por um terço do total da produção científica: Electronic Library, Program Electronic Library and Information Systems, Library Hi Tech, Library Trends e Libri. As principais palavras-chave indexadas pela Web of Science foram: Academic Library, Internet, Digital Library, Information Retrieval, Librarians e Mobile Services. São abordagens muito presentes no desenvolvimento de produtos, serviços, softwares e aplicativos na sociedade atual.

The modern knowledge economy has transformed library and information organizations to adopt and embrace digital social media platforms. Proliferation and growth of social media and social networking technologies continue to play pivotal roles in establishment and operation of digital library and information systems in organizations. The purpose of the chapter is to examine the extent to which information professionals and practitioners understand the impact of social media and social networking technologies on digital library and information systems. The author also analyzes how information professionals manage and promote the adherence to copyright and intellectual property laws in digital library contexts. This chapter specifically discusses the rationale for social media and social networking in digital library and information systems; emerging social media platforms and their applications; legal aspects of social media, copyright and intellectual property protection, and risk management; as well as professional ethics and guidance on social media.

Purpose The purpose of this paper is to describe a new benchmarking framework on the factors that influence digital library (DL) adoption by aligning them with the constructs of DL models to establish the likely critical success factors (CSFs) for DL implementation. Design/methodology/approach Concept mapping is used to illustrate the relationship between the information systems success model and DL frameworks. Technology organisation and environment (TOE) framework was chosen as the central theme and was mapped with the three DL frameworks reviewed (5S framework; the Zachman Framework for Enterprise Architecture and the DELOS DL reference model) to come up with the likely success dimensions for DLs. A set of possible success factors was assembled from the literature on previous studies relating to factors that are critical to the success of information systems and DLs. The description of each DL potential success factors was finally developed as an item statement with verification from the literature review. Findings A total of 53 success factors items were assembled from literature represented by the final ten constructs of the CSFs; 16 items characterise DL technology, 13 items denote DL organisation and 24 items symbolise DL environment. Findings show that these factors may be good determinants for an effective implementation of DLs. Research limitations/implications The outcome can positively influence the implementation of DLs worldwide. Originality/value This is the first study in library science that incorporates TOE with DL frameworks to come up with the success factors of DL implementation.
