Impact of vegetation types on the floristic diversity, the availability and the ecological characteristics of five woody species stands used in the management of hypertension and diabetes in southern Burkina Faso

The most crucial function of lowland-confined floodplains with low slopes is to support flood conveyance and fasten floods; however, obstacles can hinder it. The management of riparian vegetation is often neglected, though woody species increase the vegetation roughness of floodplains and increase flood levels. The aims are (1) to determine the branch density of various riparian vegetation types in the flood conveyance zone up to the level of artificial levees (up to 5 m), and (2) to assess the spatial distribution of densely vegetated patches. Applying a decision tree and machine learning, six vegetation types were identified with an accuracy of 83%. The vegetation density was determined within each type by applying the normalized relative point density (NRD) method. Besides, vegetation density was calculated in each submerged vegetation zone (1–2 m, 2–3 m, etc.). Thus, the obstacles for floods with various frequencies were mapped. In the study area, young poplar plantations offer the most favorable flood conveyance conditions, whereas invasive Amorpha thickets and the dense stands of native willow forests provide the worst conditions for flood conveyance. Dense and very dense vegetation patches are common in all submerged vegetation zones; thus, vegetation could heavily influence floods.

Introduction: In Niger, the degradation of ecosystems leads to a loss of biodiversity and an increase in the adverse effects of climate change, especially in the ecosystems contracted from the plateaux of the Niger W biosphere reserve. Objective: The objective of this study is to characterize the spatial variability of the flora according to the north-south rainfall gradient of the reserve. Methodology: Phytosociological surveys, an ascending hierarchical classification and a canonical analysis of correspondences between plant groups and environmental factors. Results-Discussion: The 126 inventoried species have 88 dicotyledons, 28 woody species, and 98 herbaceous species. The most common families are: Poaceae (21.42%), Fabaceae (12.69%), Rubiaceae (7.14%) and Convolvulaceae (6.34%). The biological spectrum is dominated by therophytes then microphanerophytes. The world chorology is marked by African species followed by palaeotropics or pantropicales, and at the African level, Sudano-Zambezian species are the most frequent. The presence of intermediate species (GC-SZ and GC-SZ-SahS) is noted. From north to south, 3 groups of plants were highlighted: the group with Sida cordifolia and Guiera senegalensis whose phytodiversity is reduced; Group II consisting of the subgrouping with Combretum nigricans and Microchloa indica and the subgrouping with Combretum micranthum and Gardenia sokotensis floristically rich, with however a regeneration dominated by Guiera senegalensis; grouping with Loudetia togoensis and Acacia macrostachya, in good state of conservation. Conclusion: The study made it possible to characterize floristically the various landscapes along the rainfall and anthropic gradient. Thus, in view of the structures of the stands observed, the distribution of floristic diversity increases according to a gradient of decreasing aridity from the periphery to the internal part of the reserve. From the north to the south there is a degraded part, a part gradually invaded by Guiera senegalensis and another well preserved. This work, which provides an overview of the state of conservation of the floristic diversity of the Niger W Biosphere Reserve, allows taking appropriate measures to safeguard our plant resources.

In Burkina Faso, insufficient or partial information exists on the forest potential of urban areas, marked mainly by the introduction of many exotic species. The objective of this study was to assess the floristic diversity of city trees, to reveal the benefits and risks associated with their properties in a context of climate change, increasing demography and accelerated urbanization. Surveys on 49 urban municipalities were conducted from 2015 to 2020 to identify and describe species at different phenological stages to enable photographic image recognition. Confirmations are made with floras, previous works and documentary compilations. The analyses relate to the biological diversity of species, their origins and uses. The floristic diversity of Burkina Faso's city trees consists of 251 species belonging to 174 genera and 58 families. It is comprised of 178 introduced species and 73 native species. The most represented families are Arecaceae with 7.97% of species, Euphhorbiaceae (7.57%), Moraceae (6.37%), Fabaceae - Mimosoideae (5.98%), Apocynaceae (5.98%) and the Fabaceae - Caesalpinioideae (5.58%). The most common species are Khaya senegalensis, Mangifera indica and Azadirachta indica. This work has helped to characterize the city trees of Burkina Faso. It will update the flora of the country, which is enriched with 36 new exotic species.Keywords: Urban tree, characterization, biological diversity, communes.

<p><strong>Background:</strong> The Sayula sub-basin presents a complex landscape composed of plants communities that to date have not been studied in a timely manner, so this study contributes to the knowledge of the flora and vegetation of the area and the State.</p><p><strong>Question:</strong> i) How many and which families, genera and species are in the Sayula sub-basin? ii) What are the main biological forms of the species? iii) Are there species under any category of protection? iv) How many vegetation types are present within the region?<br /> <strong>Studied species:</strong> Ferns, Gymnosperms and Angiosperms.<br /> <strong>Study site and years of study:</strong> The Sayula sub-basin, Jalisco, Mexico; from February 2012 to October 2015.<br /> <strong>Methods:</strong> Through the literature review and field work the floristic checklist was elaborated. In addition, with the use of geographic information systems, a map of land use and vegetation was made.<br /> <strong>Results:</strong> A total of 687 species were recorded, including 415 genera and 113 families. The five main families were Poaceae, Asteraceae, Fabaceae Solanaceae and Euphorbiaceae representing 42.6 % of the total species and 36.6 % of the genera. It should be noted that the predominant biological forms were herbs with 409, 105 shrubs and 74 trees. On the other hand, 47 species registered under some protection category of which, only one species <em>Cleomella jaliscensis</em> is endemic to the region. Finally, eight vegetation types were determined, being the tropical deciduous forest the one that occupies greater surface and presents greater floristic diversity.<br /> <strong>Conclusions:</strong> It is important to emphasize that during the realization of the work, agricultural activities were detected affecting the flora and vegetation, threatening the biodiversity and the natural balance of the region.</p>

Les facteurs climatiques et anthropiques sont à l’origine de la régression de la population de nombreuses espèces ligneuses en zone soudanienne. Anogeissus leiocarpa, Bombax costatum et Detarium microcarpum sont des espèces qui ont une importance socio-économique avérée et donc elles se révèlent être vulnérables. L’évaluation comparée de l’état des peuplements des trois espèces dans les aires protégées et non protégées suivant le gradient climatique permettra de disposer d’informations utiles pour leur gestion durable. La structure des populations a été évaluée à partir d’inventaires forestiers basés sur un échantillonnage aléatoire à travers des parcelles rectangulaires de 1000 m². Les individus dont le diamètre du tronc à 1,3 m de hauteur est supérieur ou égal à 5 cm ont été mesurés. La régénération (individus à D1,3 m < 5 cm) a été comptée par classe de hauteur dans des sous-placettes de 25 m². Les densités et les surfaces terrières des trois espèces varient significativement suivant le gradient de protection dans chaque secteur climatique. A. leiocarpa et D. microcarpum possèdent de bonnes structures démographiques dans les deux secteurs climatiques soudaniens, indépendamment du type d’utilisation de terres. Seule la densité de B. costatum montre une différence significative le long du gradient climatique entre les aires protégées. L’étude révèle l’importance des aires protégées dans la conservation de ces espèces vulnérables.Mots clés : Burkina Faso, zone soudanienne, aires protégées, aires non protégées, espèces vulnérables, conservation.   Climate and land use types are mainly responsible for the decline of many woody species in Sudanian areas. Anogeissus leiocarpa, Bombax costatum and Detarium microcarpum are high-value but vulnerable species due to the anthropogenic pressure. The compared assessment of the state of the targeted species in the protected and unprotected areas along the climatic gradient will provide information that could help implementing sustainable management of these species. The population structures were evaluated from forest inventories based on a random sampling through rectangular plots of 1000 m². The adult individuals of each species with diameters ≥ 5 cm at 1.30 m of heigh were measured. The juvenile individual with diameters that were less than 5 cm were counted and classified into height classes within plots size of 25 m². The structural characteristic of the targeted species vary significantly between land uses within each climatic zone. A. leiocarpa and D. microcarpum showed a stable population structure between the two climatic sectors, irrespective of management regimes. Only density of B. costatum shows a significant difference in the PAs and along climatic gradient. The approach and initial results of a vegetation survey of the Sengwa Wildlife Area are outlined. The objectives were to produce a vegetation classification and map sufficiently detailed to serve as a base for the management of the natural vegetation. The methods adopted consist of (a) stratification of the area into homogeneous units using 1:10 000 colour aerial photographs; (b) plotless random sampling of each stratum by recording cover abundance on the Braun-Blaunquet scale for all woody species; and (c) analysis of the data by indicator species analysis using the computer programme 'Twinspan’. The classification produced is successful in achieving recognizable vegetation types which tie in well with known environmental features.
