Servant leaders attempt altruistically and selflessly to help others before themselves, believe in developing their followers to their greatest potential, and seek to benefit the wider community. The main purpose of the present article is to examine servant leadership as the antecedent to employee engagement, mediated by job satisfaction, in Punjab, using data from 190 employees from different service provider companies (banks, colleges, call centres, insurance companies). Quantitative analysis shows that when employees observe positive levels in servant leadership, they are fundamentally encouraged towards exercising significantly higher levels of engagement and satisfaction.

Purpose – The purpose of this paper is to understand the phenomena of an employee “being valued” in the context of a manufacturing SME. Design/methodology/approach – A qualitative study using rich data from in-depth interviews following a classical (Glaserian) grounded theory. Findings – A three dimensional concept of authentic pride enablement, altruistically-orientated shared-purpose and servant leadership explained the reasons people felt valued. Research limitations/implications – The limitations were that this study was in one context Practical implications – The implications are that if organisations consider a servant leadership approach, enabling of authentic pride and fostering of altruistically-orientated shared-purpose, this may help employees feel valued. Social implications – This has implications for how organisations can show their employees that they are valued. Originality/value – “Being valued” is a concept/construct that is widely quoted as a driver for employee engagement and yet rarely unpacked.

Meskipun penelitian tentang topik kepemimpinan telah banyak dilakukan, namun penelitian serta publikasi yang sistematis tentang servant leadership (kepemimpinan melayani) di Indonesia masih terbatas. Oleh karena itu, dengan menggunakan Social Exchange Theory (Teori Pertukaran Sosial), penelitian ini bertujuan untuk menganalisis pengaruh servant leadership dan peran mediasi kepuasan kerja terhadap employee engagement (keterikatan karyawan) di PT. ASABRI (Persero), Indonesia. Analisis hierarchichal regression (regresi hirarkikal) digunakan untuk menguji hipotesis penelitian ini dengan bantuan software SPSS versi 25. Hasil penelitian ini menunjukkan bahwa: 1) servant leadership memiliki pengaruh yang signifikan terhadap employee engagement, 2) servant leadership memiliki pengaruh signifikan terhadap kepuasan kerja 3) kepuasan kerja memiliki pengaruh yang signifikan terhadap employee engagement 4) kepuasan kerja terbukti memiliki peran mediasi pada pengaruh servant leadership terhadap employee engagementKata Kunci: Servant Leadership, Kepuasan Kerja, Employee Engagement, Social Exchange Theory

PurposeThis paper aims to report the findings of a study examining the relationship between different leadership styles and engagement through the mediating role of proactive personality.Design/methodology/approachServant leadership, paradoxical leadership, authentic leadership, employee engagement and proactive personality were assessed in an empirical study based on a sample of 348 military personnel in Spain. The questionnaire data were analyzed through SEM using EQS and bootstrapping analysis using the PROCESS macro for SPSS.FindingsThe results reveal that servant leadership style in officers partially impacts their cadets' engagement through proactive personality but that authentic and paradoxical leadership styles do not mediate the relationship. The authors also verify a direct relationship between proactive personality and engagement.Practical implicationsThe study implications advance the literature on leadership in emphasizing new leadership styles to increase proactive personality and engagement in the military context. This study verifies the importance of military leaders fostering servant leadership as an antecedent of proactive personality. Finally, the authors show that servant leadership partially impacts engagement through proactive personality.Originality/valueThis study explores the relationship among servant, paradoxical and authentic leadership styles, proactive personality, and engagement – relationships that have not been explored theoretically and tested empirically in the military context.

The purpose of this study is to examine how servant leadership (SL) and high-performance work systems (HPWS) practices enable organizational performance, as shown by employee retention and employee satisfaction. Data was obtained from 300 full time employees in a private airline company in Jordan. The data was collected in three rounds, each separated by one-week time-lag. Structural equation modeling was used to test the proposed relationships and revealed that both servant leadership and HPWS practices were positively linked with employee satisfaction and retention, which were used as indicators of organizational sustainability. In order to understand how servant leadership and HPWS influence employee satisfaction and retention, we investigated the mediating role of employee engagement and discovered that it serves as a critical mechanism. The study affirmed that, in line with studies carried out in the west, servant leadership is also an effective leadership characteristic in the context of Jordan. Furthermore, the study helps to clarify the reason that servant leadership and HPWS lead to positive outcomes, due to the fact that these improve the engagement of employees. Thus, we understand that the increases in employee retention and satisfaction are due to the enhanced engagement of employees, and we show that engagement can be improved both by servant leadership and the application of HPWS in organizations. Consequently, the effectiveness and sustainability of the airline companies in Jordan will need to focus on primarily improving employee engagement.

The current study, which purposed to examine the mediating role of Employee Engagement (EE) in the relationship of Servant Leadership (SL) with the Organizational Performance (OP), was carried out in Jordan. The researchers distributed a questionnaire to 277 participants working in the private airline sector. The study’s findings showed that SL was positively linked with Employee Satisfaction (ES) and Employee Retention (ER) as indicators for OP. Finally; the findings indicated that EE partially mediates the relationships of SL with employee satisfaction and employee retention. The current research is the first empirical study of the airline sector in Jordan. It is also the first to focus on EE as a mediator of the effect of SL and employee retention using Structural Equation Modeling (SEM) for analyzing the data collected from employees working in the airline sector.
