AbstractGenome editing in livestock could potentially be used in ways that help resolve some of the most urgent and serious global problems pertaining to livestock, including animal suffering, pollution, antimicrobial resistance, and the spread of infectious disease. But despite this potential, some may object to pursuing it, not because genome editing is wrong in and of itself, but because it is the wrong kind of solution to the problems it addresses: it is merely a ‘technological fix’ to a complex societal problem. Yet though this objection might have wide intuitive appeal, it is often not clear what, exactly, the moral problem is supposed to be. The aim of this paper is to formulate and shed some light on the ‘technological fix objection’ to genome editing in livestock. I suggest that three concerns may underlie it, make implicit assumptions underlying the concerns explicit, and cast some doubt on several of these assumptions, at least as they apply to the use of genome editing to produce pigs resistant to the Porcine Reproductive and Respiratory Syndrome and hornless dairy cattle. I then suggest that the third, and most important, concern could be framed as a concern about complicity in factory farming. I suggest ways to evaluate this concern, and to reduce or offset any complicity in factory farming. Thinking of genome editing’s contribution to factory farming in terms of complicity, may, I suggest, tie it more explicitly and strongly to the wider obligations that come with pursuing it, including the cessation of factory farming, thereby addressing the concern that technological fixes focus only on a narrow problem.

The first aim of this paper is to circumscribe the concept of wisdom from the standpoint of opposite as well as close notions. The second one is to relate moral wisdom to social conditions; this aspect emphasises two states of moral wisdom or, rather, two levels on which the concept has been conceived: that of a fragmented and separated cognisance and manners to manage one’s own existence – whether this entity is an individual person or a small or large community – and that of an integrated wisdom of humanity in a holistic approach. The third aim of this research is to question if and how moral wisdom should be redefined in the present “Era of Emergent Technologies”. Indeed, the abundance of rapid scientific discoveries and of technologies unimaginable before generates great expectations and strong technophile beliefs concerning a spectacular and fundamental improvement of human life, generally, thus of every human person and community. But as we can see, it is not quite the case: just this incongruent situation allows, more, requires the re-questioning of the concept of moral wisdom nowadays. This re-questioning shows that the different traditional representations of moral wisdom have to be transcended and that on the theoretical level the urgency is to think within new categories and support a new type of human action adequate to the world global problems whose climbing demonstrates the backwardness of moral wisdom.

This chapter presents the third and final case study showing how relevant probabilism was in the development of modern Western culture. In early modern Europe, the emergence of new medical and philosophical theories on the nature and development of fetuses challenged the traditional doctrine, which was based on the Aristotelian notion of animation. In this situation, theologians, natural philosophers, and medical doctors were confronted with new and unprecedented doubts and dilemmas, which touched on the crucial medical, biological, philosophical, theological, and moral problem of how to establish what it means for humans to be alive. This chapter explains the role of probabilism in addressing one of these dilemmas, namely whether miscarried fetuses were in fact endowed with a soul, and consequently whether they should be baptized.

Recent developments have revolutionized the study of biomolecules. Among them are molecular markers, amplification and sequencing of nucleic acids. The latter is classified into three generations. The first allows to sequence small DNA fragments. The second one increases throughput, reducing turnaround and pricing, and is therefore more convenient to sequence full genomes and transcriptomes. The third generation is currently pushing technology to its limits, being able to sequence single molecules, without previous amplification, which was previously impossible. Besides, this represents a new revolution, allowing researchers to directly sequence RNA without previous retrotranscription. These technologies are having a significant impact on different areas, such as medicine, agronomy, ecology and biotechnology. Additionally, the study of biomolecules is revealing interesting evolutionary information. That includes deciphering what makes us human, including phenomena like non-coding RNA expansion. All this is redefining the concept of gene and transcript. Basic analyses and applications are now facilitated with new genome editing tools, such as CRISPR. All these developments, in general, and nucleic-acid sequencing, in particular, are opening a new exciting era of biomolecule analyses and applications, including personalized medicine, and diagnosis and prevention of diseases for humans and other animals.

Rock masses slopes stability is a real problem and represents an important concern in Aseer Province, in order to avoid rock fall process on the main roads. For this reason, it is necessary to explore, inspect, investigate, and understand the natural stresses within these rock masses taking into a consideration the third dimension. In this sense, the state of stresses within the rock masses depends on the characteristics of Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organization (CSIRO) cell and the dimension of the overcoring hole. Furthermore, in order to achieve the 3D modeling, the characteristics of the rock masses mentioned before are introduced in the model using “Surfrac” program written in Pascal and FORTRAN, coupled with “Abaqus” software to simulate the stresses matrix in the model. As a result, the main findings of this research are summarized in three points: the first is dealing with the CSIRO cell itself, where the direction of the gauge is important during the measurement of stresses; in fact, the perpendicular gauges work better than those parallel to the hole axis. The second is evident from the model that the direction of hole must be perpendicular to the dip direction of the rock layers, allowing giving better results compared to others. The third is the selection of the measurement site requiring involving the regional stresses of the study area according to geological investigation. Finally, it is interesting to carry out geophysical exploration in the site to understand the local tectonic movement of rock masses. Moreover, a detailed map can highlight the main fractures and faults network and overlap them with the most important projects deployed in Aseer province for maintenance and monitoring.

The spread and expansion of the influence of international terrorist organizations on a global scale keep this phenomenon in the focus of academic interest. And it is not without reason that in the last few years the world’s attention has been drawn to the issue of war on terrorism and extremism, the global problems of mankind at the beginning of XXI century. The aim of this article is comprehension of the phenomenon of national discrimination that took place at the beginning of XX century in Nazi Germany in the form of Holocaust and has resurged in the activity of the Middle-East terrorist organization ISIL as means of fight against all infidels. The authors come to the conclusion that at the bottom of functioning of the Third Reich and the ISIL there are common ideological tenets concerning the methods of state establishing and the system of its further functioning. The main tools of such states are violence and physical extermination of the people on national and religious grounds as well as application of terror methods against civilian population.

AbstractIn the era of irreversible globalisation, the worldwide economic and political rules of play must take into account of the growing importance of China. Rather than fight the country, one should pragmatically cooperate on solving the mounting global problems. Contemporarily, both China should adapt to the external world and the world itself should adapt to China. There is no possibility of imposing on it a model developed elsewhere, especially that these days liberal democracy is experiencing a systemic crisis in many countries. Neither is there a chance to impose the Chinese model on others, though it seems tempting to a country; it is not an exportable ‘commodity,’ but its elements may prove useful elsewhere. China is not aiming for global domination; instead, it is consistently integrating with the world to maintain its own development. The only reasonable way forward is thorough observation, mutual learning and pragmatic collaboration based on the non-orthodox economic thought.

‘The future of globalization’ explores three possible scenarios, first exploring the possibility of a backlash against globalization with the consequence of increased restrictions to movement and the strengthening of political authoritarianism. The second possibility is the weakening of nationalist populism and a return to a neoliberal, left-leaning globalization, possibly with a high-tech face. The third possibility is a stalemate between the two forces of nationalism and market globalism. Globalization has both caused and responded to new global problems beyond the reach of any one nation-state, and for new problems, we need new, more inclusive, and sustainable solutions guided by the principles of ethical globalism.

Although there is agreement that the body of the Sermon on the Mount (SM) contains three parts, there is little consensus regarding the nature of the third part. This passage is compared with different examples of wisdom instruction, each of which offers a unified composition on the moral problem of ‘goods’, broadly conceived as that which confers good standing or status, not only in economic terms but in social and spiritual terms as well. This provides a perspective from which to examine the overall structure of the sermon in the light of certain practices evident in ancient texts for organizing moral discourse.

'A danger for animal studies is that too heavy an emphasis on animal suffering and death risks catalysing further inertia: either by contributing to a sense of powerlessness, or by provoking others to rile against perceived opprobrium. From this perspective, Animal Death is a triumph. The chapters dealing with issues such as factory farming are unsparing, but equally argue that optimism is not impossible if such topics are broached with cultural and philosophical understanding.'

This final chapter concludes the findings of the journal. It states that contrary to the ‘popular story’ there exists no convincing evidence that passengers in the third class surged against authority and disrupted evacuation efforts, and instead summarises available evidence to determine that third class men had severely restricted access to lifeboats. It cites the moral problem of the dangerous individuals theory as a major contributing factor to the crew’s bias against them.
