The isopiestic method has been applied to the sorption of carbon tetrachloride and water vapors by activated coconut shell charcoals. The isopiestic charges were found to be linearly related over wide pressure ranges. Isotherms formed by plotting the isopiestic charges of two charcoals one against the other consisted of three linear sections for both carbon tetrachloride and water. If the pressure isotherm of one charcoal be known, those of other charcoals may be computed from it by weighing relatively few isopiestic charges. Errors inherent in the measurement of equilibrium pressures, as well as those caused by the drift of the pressure isotherms towards higher sorption capacities at a given pressure, are eliminated in the isopiestic method of comparing charcoals. The linear relation between the isopiestic charges affords a simple criterion of rejection for equations proposed to fit the pressure isotherms. It also throws into relief the structural regularities in activated charcoals. The existence of discontinuities m the sorption process, reported by previous experimenters, is supported by the isopiestic data.

AbstractExperimental data of bismuth activity coefficients at 1773 K were obtained by isopiestic method and compared to calculated values. Thermodynamic properties of the Sn-Ni-Bi liquid phase were estimated by means of the general solution model and by the methods of Kohler. Description of the ternary liquid phase (Gibbs excess energy dependence on the temperature and the composition) was achieved by using available thermodynamic data of the constitutive binary systems (Ni-Bi, Sn-Bi, Sn-Ni). A comparison between calculated quantities and experimental data wasconducted. The present assessment with thermodynamically optimized values of the system Sn-Ni-Bi (obtained by the CALPHAD approach) was in good agreement. The suggested appearance of a liquid phase miscibility gap at high temperatures is in agreement with the experimental bismuth activity data and with the assessed thermochemical functions.

The relationship between the characteristics of hydration and the selectivity of the fibrous carboxyl sorbent is established. Using the isopiestic method and thermal analysis, the hydration of the carboxyl fiber ion exchanger VION KN-1 in sodium, calcium and magnesium forms was studied. The quantity of absorbed water was determined, including the ratio of kinetically unequal water in the sorbent phase. The amount of water absorbed form of magnesium ion exchanger is greater than calcium, the molar proportion of water distribution varying in the degree of hydration of the magnesium and calcium forms fibers substantially equally. The changes in Gibbs energy of hydration and enthalpy of dehydration of ion-exchange fiber are calculated. The increase in Gibbs energy is due to the absorption of near- hydration water, and water farthest hydration is adsorbed at a constant value of the energy. Its highest values are determined for the magnesium form of the sorbent, and the least-for calcium, which corresponds to the ratio of the absorbed solvent of both forms in the first step of hydration. The exchange isotherms of calcium and magnesium ions on the sodium form of VION KN-1 fiber were obtained. The Gibbs energy of solvent interface transfer was calculated, which represents the difference between the Gibbs energies of ion exchange sorption and the direct exchange of cations, and describes the contribution of the change in sorbent hydration during the transition from one ionic form to another. It is found that the selectivity of extractable fiber ion exchanger to metal cations depending on the change in the sorbent during the hydration of ion exchange, which is energetically favorable process and promotes ion-exchange sorption. Carboxyl cation exchanger is more selective for magnesium ions than calcium ions, as confirmed by phase transfer energy high values solvent and less water released during the transition from the sodium form to the magnesium than during the transition to the calcium.

The isopiestic method has been applied to the testing of activated charcoals. The ratios of vapor adsorbed at saturation were found to agree well with the ratios of the activities obtained by a flow method. The sorptive capacities of nine different activated charcoals for carbon tetrachloride water, amyl chloride, benzene, methyl alcohol, n-hexane, mustard gas, and phosgene have been compared. A simple, rapid method for testing charcoals is suggested.

The isopiestic method was used to determine osmotic coefficients of binary Na2Cr2O7(aq) solutions of concentrations 0.6777-3.8792 mol kg-1 at 25 °C. The concentration of a saturated binary solution Na2Cr2O7(aq) at 25 °C was determined. The Pitzer ion-interaction model has been used for thermodynamic analysis of the results obtained. Optimum values of the binary parameters of interionic interaction have been calculated and important thermodynamic characteristics of Na2Cr2O7·2 H2O determined.
