AbstractPLZT thin layers were deposited onto various substrates by sol-gel methods, and crystallized under different conditions and substrate treatments. Relationships are given for the chemical characteristics of the substrate's surface and the preferred orientations which develop on heat treatment. A preferred (111) orientation always developed for perovskite crystallized on Pt layers which contained Ti on the surface. This was attributed to the formation of Pt3Ti and the role of heteroepitaxial nucleation and growth sites. In addition, a preferred (100) orientation was also obtained on unannealed Pt/Ti/SiO2/Si substrates which were free of Ti on the surface. This was attributed to self-textured growth with flat faces striving for minimum surface energy conditions. The results are discussed in terms of the importance of interfacial chemistry on the control of texture for crystallization of PLZT thin layers on coated substrates.

In this study, Dielectric Barrier Discharge plasma irradiation (DBD) is applied to treatment and improve the properties of the ZnO thin film deposited on the glass substrate as a sensor for glucose detection. The ZnO is prepared via a sol-gel method in this work. ZnO is irradiated by the DBD high voltage plasma to improve of its sensitivity. The optical properties, roughness and surface morphology of the waveguide coated ZnO thin films before and after DBD plasma irradiation are studied in this work. The results showed a significant improvement in the performance of the sensor in the detection of concentrations of glucose solution after plasma irradiation. Where the largest value in sensitivity was equal to 62.7 when the distance between electrodes was 5 cm compared to the sensitivity before irradiation, which was equal to 92. The high response showed in results demonstrating that the fabricated waveguide coated ZnO after plasma irradiation has the excellent potential application as a sensor to detect small concentration of glucose solution.

Abstract The study of nanostructure, thermal and relaxation properties (by HAADF-STEM, EDXS, DMA and DSC), combined with the calculations of interparticle distances and interfacial areas, has been performed for a series of the hybrid Cyanate Ester Resin (CER)/Si02 polymer composites with 0.01 to 10 wt.% Si02 units introduced via a sol-gel process. The absence of clusterization, arising only subnanometric Si02 nodes and their quasi-regular distribution within the amorphous matrix, with the shortest distances between nodes, provided their exceptional positive impact on the matrix properties at ultra-low Si02 contents of 0.03-0.1 wt.%. The superiority of these subnanocomposites over the nanocomposites was determined by the role of constrained interfacial dynamics over the whole matrix.

AbstractHeteropoly acids, HPA are well known solid acid and oxidation catalysts that find application in hetergeneous and homogeneous reactions. In the former, surface area and stability problems are diminshed by supporting the HPA. Typical supports include oxide substrates and porous carbon materials. The HPA's show some instability on these supports however. In this work, we demonstrate that HPA encapsulated in sol-gel silica matrices show enhanced catalytic performance without compromising the catalytic activity of the HPA. In addition, the specific role of the support in the catalytic process is described as well.

ABSTRACTTwo multi-component sol-gel compositions were developed and compared to several commercially available high-temperature glasses. All were then used and characterized as protective coatings for intermetallic titanium aluminide.The sol-gels were studied as thin film coatings and the commercial glasses were studied as enameled coatings. Attention was given to (1) the effect of the application temperature on the original microstructure of the metal, and (2) the role of interfacial conditions between the glass and metal in cyclic and isothermal thermal cycles between ambient temperature and 760°C (1400°F).
