The fatigue performance of one widely used wrought magnesium alloy AZ31B in rolled form was studied using acoustic emission (AE). AE energy release during corrosion fatigue (CF) testing was measured at room temperature. It is found that AE energy release can express corrosion fatigue damage experienced by the material.

Uni-axial tensile plastic deformation behavior of rolled magnesium alloy AZ31B under the temperature range from room temperature(RT) to 250°C with strain rates between 10-3 and 10-1s-1 has been systematically investigated. Microstructure evolution and texture were determined using optical microscopy (OM) and electron back-scattered diffraction (EBSD) techniques, respectively. Our results indicated that the strength and elongation-to-fracture were more sensitive to strain rates at elevated temperature rather than that at room temperature; dynamic recrystallization (DRX) and relaxation of stress at elevated temperature resulted in dramatic change of mechanical properties. Compared with strain rate, the temperature played a more important role in ductility of AZ31B Mg alloy sheet.

In this paper, the basic formability of stamping of magnesium-alloy AZ31B sheet has been studied through experiments. The stamping formability of magnesium-alloy AZ31B sheet, such as the conical cup value, bending formability, deep drawing formability, formability of hole expanding, forming limit has been studied by simulating processing experiments. The formability of stamping supplies the basic reference data for the stamping processing. It is also found that the formability of stamping of magnesium-alloy AZ31B sheets is poor at room temperature and is excellent at intermediate and high temperatures.

Extrusion-torsion simultaneous processing is a very attractive technique for fabricating a rod-shape material with fine grain and random texture. We have proposed a new screw form rolling process combined with preliminary extrusion-torsion simultaneous working. Microstructure evolution and mechanical property change of AZ91D magnesium alloy during extrusion-torsion simultaneous processing was examined through microstructure observation, X-ray diffraction analysis and micro-Vickers hardness measurement. By the addition of torsion, the crystal orientation of AZ91D magnesium alloy workpiece was drastically changed from basal crystalline orientation to the random orientation. Crystal grain occurred through the dynamic recrystallization and tended to coarsen with an increase of extrusion-torsion temperature. Grain refinement under 2 um was achieved at the lowest extrusion-torsion temperature of 523 K. M8 gauge AZ91D magnesium alloy screw was successfully formed at room temperature using the extrusion-twisted workpiece preliminary solution treating at 678 K for 345.6 ks. It was found that the extrusion-torsion temperature of 678 K must be selected to fabricate the good screw without any defects.
