AbstractPrecise control of inclusion and molten steel compositions during ladle-furnace refining is important to obtain high-quality steel. Mass-transfer behavior affects these compositions. A model was developed to investigate the mass transfer occurring between molten steel, slag, inclusions, and the refractory during ladle-furnace refining, using two-film theory to describe the reactions. A coupled-reaction model based on the CaO–Al2O3–MgO–SiO2–FeO–P2O5 slag and Mn–Si–Al–Ca–Mg–P–S–O steel systems was applied to describe the reactions between molten steel and slag; the reactions between the refractory lining and slag or steel were described using average industrial erosion rate data. The model was used to calculate changes in the compositions of molten steel and slag, oxygen activity at the slag–molten steel interface, and composition of the inclusions. The calculated results agreed with operational results for a 100 t ladle furnace at the Tangsteel plant in China.

In order to control the plasticity of CaO-SiO2-Al2O3system inclusions so as to reduce the harm to the quality of 42CrMoA crankshaft steel, the target controlling ranges of CaO-SiO2-Al2O3inclusions is put forward. On the basis, influence of CaO-SiO2-Al2O3and CaO-SiO2-Al2O3-MgO system top slag on the content of calcium and aluminum in molten steel is contrasted. Theoretical research results show that, calcium activity should be controlled in the range of (90~3300)×10-10, oxygen activity should be below 7×10-6, the mass percent of calcium should be controlled more than 75ppm. And CaO-SiO2-Al2O3-MgO should be a good choice to obtain the plastic inclusions of CaO-SiO2-Al2O3.

Ever since Habraken and Economopoulos first employed the term granular bainite to classify certain unconventional transformation products in continuously cooled steels, the term has been widely accepted and used, despite the lack of a clear consensus as to the detailed nature of the transformation products which constitute granular bainite. This paper presents the preliminary results of a TEM investigation of an 0.04 wt% C, copper-containing steel (designated HSLA-100). It is suggested that the term granular ferrite rather than granular bainite is a more accurate description of this multiphase reaction product.Figure 1 is a light micrograph of a sample which had been air-cooled from 900°C to room temperature. The microstructure is typical of that which has been termed granular bainite in the past and appears to consist of equiaxed ferritic grains together with other minor transformation products. In order to examine these structures in more detail, both continuously cooled and isothermally transformed and quenched materials have been examined with TEM. Granular bainite has been found in virtually all samples.
