AbstractAcross the globe, research, development, and innovation (RDI) processes are operating at increasingly accelerated paces, promising rapid development and higher standards of living, but also increasing the likelihood of unintended, socially undesirable effects that inevitably attend progress. The notion of responsible research and innovation (RRI) has emerged in response to this dilemma, and the integration of RRI into daily RDI practices itself represents a considerable challenge. Integrating RRI concepts and practices at an early or even pre-career stage, before researchers fully develop their daily routines, could strengthen the assimilation of RRI into RDI more generally. Thus, in line with the emphasis of RRI on science education, how to integrate RRI aspects in the thinking of researchers-in-the-making before they start their active research carrier is an important but under-investigated question. In addition, the special features of Generation Z currently being in higher education suggest the use nontraditional tools in science education.Accordingly, this exploratory study asks how the RRI-awareness of researchers-in-the-making can be raised. We adapt the Socio-Technical Integration Research (STIR) method, which facilitates reflection on societal aspects during scientific research practices and decisions, to the context of science education. We test the introduction of STIR among researchers-in-the-making studying natural sciences at the University of Szeged (Hungary). Our findings suggest potential steps for science education on RRI with attention to the special needs Generation Z and facilitating their RRI awareness for their active researcher career.

Responsible Research and Innovation (RRI) has recently gained wider importance in the European Union (EU) as an emergent framework informing the governance of science. While a growing body of literature describing RRI and its main conceptual dimensions has appeared in the last seven years or so and in several policy documents, the European Commission has emphasized the need to promote science education in the RRI context, there is no theoretical elaboration of how RRI can be meaningfully integrated into the practice of science education. In order to address this problem, the present research aimed at inquiring into the way in which science teachers make sense of RRI in school. Data were gathered with individual semi-structured interviews from 29 science teachers working in comprehensive schools and hobby schools. Abductive content analysis combining data and conceptual dimensions of RRI was used. In the light of how the science teachers in our sample have made sense of RRI, four theoretical categories have emerged: (1) meaning making; (2) taking action; (3) exploring; and (4) inclusion. These findings have important implications for developing a theory of RRI which can be beneficial for researchers as well as teachers for meaningfully integrating RRI into science education. The term „Responsible Research and Innovation (RRI)” has been increasingly used for over a decade. The RRI concept is not currently well defined. The theory of RRI is not developed enough and there are still conceptual divergences. This paper introduces the issue of Responsible Research and Innovation and addresses the following key questions: How do we define RRI? Where do we stand in terms of understanding the RRI dimensions presented in literature? What is the role of RRI in the university technology transfer activity? The study is based on literature search on the Scopus (www.scopus.com), EBSCO (www.ebsco.com), Google Scholar (scholar.google.com) and Google Books (books.google.com) databases to obtain articles published in peer reviewed journals, related to the concept of RRI and technology transfer. The search terms (for title and topic) were: responsible innovation, responsible research and innovation, RRI, technology transfer. Critical analysis of the state of knowledge allowed to propose a set of seven conceptual dimensions (inclusion, anticipation, responsiveness, reflexivity, sustainability, care and economic) of the Responsible Research and Innovation concept that may be implemented in technology transfer processes executed at universities. RRI concept is still under development. A discussion around the conceptual dimensions of RRI will be followed by the strategic challenges of universities. The study resulted in two conclusions. Firstly, the RRI concept may shift the focus of TTOs (Technology Transfer Offices) from outcomes (revenues, cash flow, rate of return, patents, license fee, etc.) to processes, which further leads to the second conclusion, that all seven presented conceptual dimensions should indicate particular types of processes in university TTO. Fulfillment of these two conclusions makes possible to implement RRI on University in a wider perspective, than just fulfill the requirements of administrative funders.

This research study is an exploratory study of value co-creation in the university education system in the context of its socio-eco-cultural conditions. Dynamic internationalisation of higher education and glocal economy radically influence the research outcome and it has implications to the global ranking of the universities. Internationalisation and ranking of higher education institutions are entwined and mutually influence. The global International ranking initiated in December 2003 by the finance ministry of UK become proxy to determine the quality of a university in recent times. National and regional socio-eco-political factors have also transformed the functioning of universities with respect to international student recruitments.  International students majorly contribute towards the fund for the university and economy of the country. University has mainly four key dimensions like student education, knowledge transfer, problem-solving, serving the society and economy. Even though the university is considered as a system, based on systems theory, harmonisation with the basic purposes of the university is human value. The societal need is to recuperate the vital inputs like students, teachers and the fund necessary for optimal performance of the university. The mechanism is evident from the Triple Helix Model [1], and Interdependence Model [2]. It led to research studies and models for university-industry linkages in a knowledge economy. SKIN (Simulating Knowledge Dynamics in Innovation Networks) model attempts to improve our understanding of the complex processes in modern innovations, used by scholars to find solutions to complex challenges. Value creation in the university systems and the perception by peers deviate as per the quality of supply inputs. Research findings indicate that parameters used for ranking and accreditations enforce universities to focus on the value creation in the system, improving year after year. The findings emphasise to collaborate with researchers, educators, professionals and policymakers to empower universities to be able to meaningfully contribute to practical, need-based societal issues and elevate interest of scholars, professionals, policy makers and the industry. A holistic approach is needed for a trans-disciplinary and inter-disciplinary approach in university curriculum that addresses the gap between research and education for co-creating values in the university system. Recently embedding Responsible Research and Innovation (RRI) within the university system has started, which is a complex process. Achieving the objective in the changing structures, culture and practice of university system requires the forces of change being exerted by transposing the larger societal needs. In this research presentation, the authors have underscored blatantly a couple of main points. Firstly how the key findings for universities need to adapt in line with the international rankings and strengthen for value creation; which can transform universities; making them more responsible towards demands of society. The study thrives with reference to responsible research and innovation system as the key driver.  Secondly, the authors have highlighted the complexity and challenges universities are facing and how these could be addressed. The scrupulous approach to the facets of RRI, the new knowledge in the times of new global socio-economic environment gives a tangible and strong relevance to the implementation of responsible research and innovation.
