We have isolated two phytoconstituents present in the B. forficata leaves, a medicinal plant employed in folk medicine specially for the treatment of diabetes. These compounds were isolated by column chromatography and identified as β-sitosterol and kaempferol-3,7-dirhamnoside (kaempferitrin) by spectroscopical data and comparison with authentic samples. A comparative study with different parts of the plant indicated that the latter is present only in the leaves, suggesting that it might be useful for a suitable quality control of phytotherapeutics which contain this organ of B. forficata in its composition.

The medieval British Isles were marked by a lively monastic presence throughout the entire period. Groups of monks, nuns, regular canons and canonesses, and friars established communities even in the furthermost reaches of the territory, and by doing so they came to play an important part in the life, culture, economy, and politics of the region. This paper will provide an overview of the arrival and spread of the different religious orders in England, Ireland, Wales, and Scotland, and by doing so, it will provide some comparative study of the different parts of the British Isles and examine how and when the spread and settlement of the various religious groups manifested itself across the islands, and what their impact was upon their localities and the society around them.

Abstract Water and wastewater pipes require some of the highest levels of infrastructure investment; they also deteriorate faster than they can be repaired. The use of alternative rehabilitation technologies, which are quicker and less expensive than pipe replacement, has therefore increased significantly in recent years, worldwide. Field studies on relined wastewater pipes removed from buildings in different parts of Sweden revealed the existence of a variety of common defects, most of which could have been prevented by better installation. Increased quality-focused monitoring could help to ensure that relined pipes reach their expected service life, while comprehensive documentation could assist in providing sufficient information to facilitate progress in the field. This paper includes a brief overview of the technologies used in Sweden, current quality control practices, repeated observed defects related to installation, crucial steps that affect final quality, and recommendations to be considered in the contexts of detailed quality control and quality assurance procedures.

Abstract Background: Alpinia officinarum Hance (ginger family) is an important Chinese medicine, especially in Southern China. Objective: A simple and effective high-performance thin-layer chromatography coupled with 2, 2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl bioautography (HPTLC-DPPH) and electrospray ionization quadrupole time-of-flight tandem mass spectrometry (ESI-Q-TOF-MS/MS) method was developed for the bioactivity-based quality control of A. officinarum. Methods: The HPTLC-DPPH and ESI-Q-TOF-MS/MS were applied for the analysis of different parts of A. officinarum after using methanol extraction for 23 batches of taproot, four batches of aerial, and three batches of fibril parts. Results: The systematic evaluation showed that similar components in taproot and aerial parts make the major antioxidant activity. However, based on our evaluation, the antioxidant ability of the aerial parts is lower than the taproot parts. There is also a significant difference (P < 0.05) between taproot and fibril parts of the root. The chemical structures of compounds with the antioxidant capacity were tentatively identified as 5R-hydroxy-7-(4-hydroxy-3-methoxyphenyl)-1-phenyl-3-heptanone (band 1), kaempferide (band 2), and galangin (band 3) based on ESI-Q-TOF-MS/MS analytical results and further confirmed by standards. Conclusions: This identification indicated that two flavonoid compounds and one diarylheptanoid compound possessed high potentials to be used as the antioxidant biomarkers for the quality control of A. officinarum. Highlights: The comparison of different parts could be considered as guidelines for the usage of A. officinarum.

Epidendrum mosenii is a Brazilian medicinal plant, traditionally used to treat infections and pains. This study reports on the chemical composition and microbiological properties of different parts and in different seasons of this plant. Results demonstrate that 4,3′,5′-trihydroxy-3-methoxy-dihydrostilbene (1), 4,5-dihydroxy-3,3-dimethoxy-dihydrostilbene (2) and pholidotin (3) were mainly present in the roots in all seasons, and the yield of mass extract increased their recovery in other parts, such as the stem and leaves for compounds (2) and (3), in summer and winter, respectively. The antifungal results indicate that compounds (1) and (2) have interesting activity against Cryptococcus neoformans, Microsporum gypseum, Trychophyton rubrum and Trychophyton mentagrophytes with MIC values between 62.5 and 125 μg/mL. Taken together, these results strongly suggest that the antifungal properties of E. mosenii are related, at least in part, to the presence of dihydrostilbenes 1 and 2, and this is useful for quality control of phytopreparations based on this plant, justifying the popular use of this plant to treat infections.

A comparative study of the mechanical properties of the extruded and flattened nanostructured composites Al-C60 has been made using two different methods of destructive and non-destructive testing: tensile and compression macro-tests and sub-micron range sclerometry (scratch test). Direct correlation was found between the dominant types of deformation during scratching and the type of “stress-strain” dependencies. The results are useful for understanding the extrusion process and quality control at different load scale.
