Comparison of Silicon Phase in Al-20Si Alloys and Zn-27Al-3Si Alloys with Strontium Addition

The process of crystalline silicon phase formation in tin-doped amorphous silicon (a-SiSn) films has been studied. The inclusions of metallic tin are shown to play a key role in the crystallization of researched a-SiSn specimens with Sn contents of 1–10 at% at temperatures of 300–500 ∘C. The crystallization process can conditionally be divided into two stages. At the first stage, the formation of metallic tin inclusions occurs in the bulk of as-precipitated films owing to the diffusion of tin atoms in the amorphous silicon matrix. At the second stage, the formation of the nanocrystalline phase of silicon occurs as a result of the motion of silicon atoms from the amorphous phase to the crystalline one through the formed metallic tin inclusions. The presence of the latter ensures the formation of silicon crystallites at a much lower temperature than the solid-phase recrystallization temperature (about 750 ∘C). A possibility for a relation to exist between the sizes of growing silicon nanocrystallites and metallic tin inclusions favoring the formation of nanocrystallites has been analyzed.

To develop high wear-resistant protective materials for magnesium alloy, high-silica Al-based alloy modified via P-element was fabricated by DC casting method. Microstructure of ingot samples was observed by using optical microscopy (OM), etc. The results demonstrated that Al-Si-0.01%P alloy with unique microstructure and without defects such as voids and rarefaction might be generated by processing control. Owing to modification by Al-P interalloy, primary crystal silicon phase in hypereutectic Al-Si alloy were refined effectively. Its size in Al-18Si-0.01%P alloy decreased from 50μm to 20μm, and distributed uniquely than that in Al-18Si alloy. Al-P acted as heterogeneous core of primary crystal silicon phase, which was the main mechanism for Al-P interalloy to modify primary crystal silicon in Al-Si alloy.

Microstructural Analysis plays an important role in enhancing the mechanical properties of metals and composites. Usually Aluminium Silicon Carbide (Al6063/SiC) alloys are mixed with strontium, sodium and antimony for high durability even though they are toxic and costly. As an alternative calcium is used as an alloying element to improve the mechanical property of Al6063/Sic alloy. In this paper Al6063 is chosen as the matrix material while Sic is used as a reinforcement where calcium powder is added to modify the silicon phase of the composite. Finally, concentration of Silicon carbide is varied from 0 to 150 mg to produce four specimens of Al6063 alloy and it is subjected to microstructure analysis which showed the reduction of grain size and therefore improvement in the hardness from 52.9 HV to 58.4 HV and decrease in the wear loss from 3.97 to 3.27 percentage.

In this research, various processing conditions were implemented to enhance the mechanical properties of Al-Si alloys. The silicon content was varied from hypoeutectic (Si-10 wt.%) to eutectic (Si-12.6 wt.%) and hypereutectic (Si-14 wt.%) for the preparation of Al-XSi-3Cu-0.5Fe-0.6 Mg (X = 10–14%) alloys using die casting. Subsequently, these alloys were hot-extruded with an optimum extrusion ratio (17:1) at 400 °C to match the output extruded bar to the compressor size. An analysis of the microstructural features along with a chemical compositional analysis were carried out using scanning electron microscope along with energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy and transmission electron microscope. The SEM micrographs of the extruded samples displayed cracks in primary Si, and the intermetallic (β-Al5FeSi) phase was fragmented accordingly. In addition, the silicon phase was homogenously distributed, and the size remained constant. The mechanical properties of the extruded samples were enhanced by the increase of silicon content, and consequently the ductility decreased. By implementing proper T6 heat treatment parameters, coherent Al2Cu phases were formed in the Al matrix, and the Si phase was gradually increased along with the silicon content. Therefore, high tensile strength was achieved, reaching values for the Al-XSi-3Cu-0.5Fe-0.6Mg (X = 10–14%) alloys of 366 MPa, 388 MPa, and 420 MPa, respectively.

The paper considers the problem of recycling the dust waste resulting from metallurgical silicon production; such dust contains considerable amounts of valuable silica. The problem is solved by redirecting this byproduct to the silicon smelting process. We herein propose using the dust left in silicon and aluminum production as a component of pelletized charge, used for silicon smelting in ore-thermal furnaces (OTF). Mathematical (physico-chemical) modeling was applied to study the behavior of pelletized-charge components, in order to predict the chemical composition of smelting-produced silicon. We generated a model that simulated the four temperature zones of a furnace, as well as the crystalline-silicon phase (25°С). The model contained 17 elements entering the furnace, due to being contained in raw materials, electrodes, and the air. Modeling produced molten silicon, 91.73 wt% of which was the target product. Modeling showed that, when using the proposed combined charge, silicon extraction factor would amount to 69.25%, which agrees well with practical data. Results of modeling the chemical composition of crystalline silicon agreed well with the chemical analysis of actually produced silicon.
